Look: Urban Decay Black Palette

Can you tell that I used four eyeshadows in this look? If you can, you earn a merit badge for excellent, discerning sight! Despite looking and even swatching relatively distinctively, when used, the eyeshadows look rather similar. Just kind of looks like an all-black smoky eye to me! Review to follow shortly. This was a really quick look really just done to test out just how much color would show through when used in practice.

I added all that glitter to give this look more va-voom… it was just rather one-note beforehand. I will say that Distortion over Deviant is stunning–more so in person as the glitter flashes.

You will need the following…

Eyes: Urban Decay Eden Primer Potion (matte beige base), Urban Decay Cobra Eyeshadow (black with antique gold), Urban Decay Libertine Eyeshadow (black with green), Urban Decay Black Dog Eyeshadow (matte black), Burberry Trench Eyeshadow (highlighter), Urban Decay Deviant 24/7 Liner (medium blue), Urban Decay Distortion Glitter Liner (iridescent), Chanel Inimitable Intense Mascara (black)
Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140), Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (translucent)
Cheeks: MAC Desert Rose Blush (muted pink)
Lips: MAC Liquid Lurex Lipstick (iridescent antique gold glitter), MAC Pink Poodle Lipglass (bright pink)
Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
Substitutes: Liquid Lurex = Tanarama

For eyes, start by applying Eden as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Cobra eyeshadow on the lower half of the lid and pat on horizontally. Lightly blend Libertine eyeshadow on upper half of the lid, patting lightly, all the way across with the 239. Next, apply Black Dog eyeshadow into the crease with the 226, lightly blending onto the outer lid. Blend Trench eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Deviant liner on the lower lash line, then lightly pat on Distortion glitter liner on top. Finish by sweeping lashes with Inimitable Intense mascara, and then use Distortion glitter liner brushed onto lashes.

For cheeks, apply Desert Rose blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Liquid Lurex lipstick first, and then layer Pink Poodle lipglass for a complementing lip.

Lipglass ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

Fancy Cat is a darkened brown with a slight plum edge and multi-colored shimmer, though predominantly yellowed gold. It has a semi-opaque look on lips; may look splotchy when worn alone. It’s a little similar to Chai lipglass, but I’d say the shimmer is what differentiates the two.
Spree is a darkened champagne-coral with lots of frosty shimmer. It’s nearly opaque on lips.
Jealous is a sheer green-tinged base with white, green-gold, and pale gold shimmer. Better for layering than worn alone, since it tends to just look like clear gloss with shimmer by itself. It’s much cooler and paler than Springbean lustreglass.

Lipstick ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

Kittenish is a darkened red with subtle ruby shimmer with a cremesheen finish. It’s opaque, and it’s rather slippery and glaze-like for a cremesheen. If you typically find cremesheens drying and often skip the formula, you may want to give Kittenish the once-over. It feels like a lighter version of Media (permanent).
Liquid Lurex is a multi-colored, slightly yellowed gray glittered dazzle finish lipstick–was also recently released with Digi-Pops. This is a shade better layered than worn alone.
Pet Me Please is a pale mauve with a high frost finish. If you are not a fan of shimmery or frosty lips, definitely skip this one. It is one of the frostier lipsticks I’ve seen released lately. It is opaque, though. It’s a bit similar to Pervette, but it’s a lot frostier, more opaque, and pinker.
To Pamper is a semi-opaque taupe nude with a lustre finish. For a lustre, it’s surprisingly pigmented, but it has that glossy, slightly sheered out look, too. This is very nude, and on me, not so flattering as it blends in with my skin tone. It reminded me of Call My Bluff (In the Groove) as well as Shitaki (permanent).

Mineralize Blush ($21.00 U.S. / $25.00 CDN)

The Soft Meow is a muted medium tan brown. It’s not warm, it’s not cool–it’s very neutral. It’s more of a bronzing shade than a contouring color. Personally, it seemed a little dirty on my skin tone, though–perhaps because it lacks warmth, so on my warmer skin tone, it doesn’t look so hot.

I liked this in close-ups, but I don’t like it so much with my skin tone overall. I think someone paler than me could really rock this, though!

You will need the following…

Eyes: NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base (neutral eyeshadow base), NARS Mangrove Eyeshadow (mustard yellow), NARS Rajasthan Eyeshadow (golden taupe/dark green-blue), NARS Daphne Eyeshadow (deep purple), Burberry Trench Eyeshadow (highlighter), Make Up For Ever #11L Aqua Eyes (violet), Lancome Precious Cells Mascara (black)
Face: NARS Sheer Matte Foundation (Punjab), Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder (translucent)
Cheeks: NARS Douceur Blush (rosy brown)
Lips: MAC Liquid Lurex Dazzle Lipstick (sheer green-gold), MAC Hi-Falutin’ Dazzleglass (pink melon)
Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 116 (dense blush brush)

For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Mangrove eyeshadow on the inner third of the lid and pull upwards along the inner crease. Lightly blend Rajasthan (taupe) eyeshadow on the middle of the lid blended to the outer lid with the 239. Next, apply Daphne eyeshadow into the crease with the 226, lightly blending onto the outer lid. Blend Trench eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying #11L eyeliner on the lower lash line. Finish by sweeping lashes with Precious Cells mascara.

For cheeks, apply Douceur blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.

For lips, apply Liquid Lurex lipstick first, and then layer Hi-falutin’ dazzleglass for a complementing lip.

MAC Dazzle Lipstick for the Glitter Lovers

Twenty lip swatches later… and now it’s time to actually go through and review the new Dazzle Lipsticks! MAC has put out thirteen shades of their newest lipstick formula, which contains micro-glitter to the max. Think Dazzleglass but in lipstick form! These will debut with Nordstrom’s Digi-Pops Collection (officially out on the 15th) and then later hit MAC stores and other department store counters on August 5th. I originally previewed Digi-Pops here.

Dazzle Lipstick ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

Baby’s On Fire is a softened ruby red with silver and scarlekt sparkle. It’s a semi-opaque shade that gives a good dose of color without feeling or looking heavy. It’s dazzling and shimmery without being unwearable–the glitter in this one also didn’t seem to slip-slide all over my lips.
Glaringly Hip is a semi-sheer muted peach with brown undertones and pink and white glitter. It doesn’t look amazing by itself in my opinion–it seems a little clumpy and gritty (even though it doesn’t feel gritty!). There was some glitter shifting, but it wasn’t too bad.
Hellraiser is a sheer, darkened mauve-plum with bluish-silver glitter. This one looks and feels like a lustre finish, even though it clearly has all the micro-glitter one could ask for.
Hot Sass is a semi-opaque, brightened orange with reddish-copper glitter. It delivers decent color pay off without too much glitter shift. It’s one of the more pigmented shades, too, and it doesn’t yellow teeth too much, either.
Infused with Glam is a semi-opaque, warmed-up brown with red undertones and gold and copper-red micro-glitter. You won’t want to smoosh your lips together too much, because the glitter can shift around and look uneven.
Liquid Lurex is a sheer yellow gray-gold with silver and copper micro-glitter. This is an interesting shade, though I think it’d be better paired with a lipgloss on top.

The formula isn’t gritty, but there is a noticeable texture–it’s like you know there’s glitter, therefore you can feel it when you press your lips together, but it’s not what one would describe as gritty. Even as the lipstick fades, the glitter never transforms into something gritty, but you will likely find glittery bits around your lips and on them by the end of the day. (I think I have enough sparkle to light up Times Square at the moment…)

They are the very definition of sparkling–very glittery, shimmering, and dazzling–but the effect may be too much for some to wear alone. A creamier gloss can help to minimize the effect a bit (but still getting some of it), or you can really amp it up by topping with Dazzleglass or Superglass (if you’re really feeling fun!). The Dazzle lipsticks are going to be something some will love, others will loathe–just depends on your style and preferences.

They wear about two to three hours, though the more pigmented shades run closer to three and a little more than two–which is just below average for MAC lipsticks for me. The glitter stays on for longer but the base color fades in the time frame I mentioned. Like other MAC lipsticks, these are vanilla scented and come in the traditional black bullet.

MAC describes these as “long-wearing” (not the case for me) with “rich, creamy color.” I get creamy–they feel moisturizing and almost like glaze/lustre lipsticks–but the majority don’t seem to have rich color.

RECOMMENDATION: I like the concept, just because it is fun and different from other lipsticks I have. I did find that some of the glitter can slip-slide and end up looking rather uneven on lips if you’re not careful about application. It’s not a big deal, because you just have to make yourself conscious of it.

Preview: MAC Dazzle Lipstick & Dazzleglass from Digi-Pop

MAC Digi-Pops: Lip Server Collection is available for pre-order at your local Nordstrom. It doesn’t launch until July 15th, but pre-orders are in full swing. There are thirteen shades of new (and of course, limited edition!) Dazzle Lipsticks and seven shades (some new, some repromoted, but all limited edition) Dazzleglasses.

I didn’t test any of these my lips, so I really can’t comment on the wear or feel on the lips. (Sorry all, I couldn’t bring myself to use a tester — the germaphobe in me refused to participate!) The Dazzle Lipsticks did not feel gritty or rough when I swatched them–surprisingly smooth. They look like they varied from sheer to semi-sheer in color, but it’s difficult to know for sure just how sheer or opaque they may lean without swatching them on lips. (Which I fully intend to do, when I’m able to pick up my pre-order!)
