Paint Pots Dressed Up as Fluidlines

MAC Glamour Daze Fluidlines ($16.50 for 0.10 oz.) includes three new (and limited!) shades: Catch My Eye (cool taupe grey with dazzle pearl), Feminine Edge (pink mauve with dazzle pearl), and Little Black Bow (charcoal with dazzle pearl).

These were an odd bunch of Fluidlines. I don’t like them as Fluidlines at all; I don’t think they work well for lining–I tried using all three by applying them with MAC’s 208 brush (which is what I typically use for Fluidlines), and so little product gets dispersed. The line is uneven, and these were really, really creamy, so they tended to smudge easily while you were trying to line. All three looked significantly different when used as an eyeliner than how they appeared in the pot, and a lot of it is because they’re not very pigmented from the get-go. They’re buildable, and the Fluidline formula is very conducive to layering, but to get an opaque line, I had to re-line two to four times.

Ultimately, they felt more like Paint Pots in Fluidline clothing! They would work better as Paint Pots, too, because as a sheer wash of sparkly cream eyeshadow, they work. The Fluidline formula is great here: it’s creamy but stubbornly long-lasting, so it dries down in thirty seconds or so, and then it stays on for eight hours or longer. There is almost no fall out during the wear; I saw a couple stray sparkles but it was very, very minimal.

Catch My Eye is a gray-ish taupe with champagne sparkle. When layered heavily, it has a metallic finish and looks very taupe, but when used as an eyeliner, it looks almost mauve and is quite light and sheer. Sheered out, as kind of a base or wash of eyeshadow, it is more taupe but still mauve-y. The metallic finish is a lot less apparent unless it is layered.

Feminine Edge is a sparkly sheer medium pink with chunky sparkle. This one was the sheerest and most difficult shade to work with, because it was very sparkly and gritty. It doesn’t really show up as pink unless you use several layers of product, as it shows up as a sheer, warm-ish pink tinge as an eyeliner and mostly just sparkles.

Little Black Bow is a soft brown-black with sparkle. When it is layered heavily, you’ll see the brown tones come out, but when it is sheered out as a wash, it looks more like a soft black with mere brown tones. As an eyeliner, it looks like a faded almost taupe-like brown.

As Fluidlines, they’re disappointing, because while you can always use a Fluidline as an eyeshadow base or cream eyeshadow, that’s not really its primary purpose.  These don’t line well; they’re the kind of product that is better layered over your favorite eyeliner, because then these can add sparkle but you wouldn’t have to rely on it for providing color, too.  As more of a wash of sparkly eyeshadow, they’re better, and they are buildable to fairly opaque coverage, but it will take some layering.

For a particular type of use and for the right person, I could see some of these shades being must-haves, but for someone who’s looking for Blacktrack with sparkle, you won’t find that kind of payoff here.  They were more reminiscent of last year’s Glitter & Ice Paint Pots than the Fluidline range.

A Perfect Bronze for Fall

MAC Rich Ground Fluidline ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “reddened coco with frost.” It’s a subtly red-toned bronzy brown with a soft sheen. Make Up For Ever #14 is darker, redder. Make Up For Ever #12 is more copper in color. Urban Decay Lucky is rather similar, perhaps a smidgen more copper.

I’m so glad this is part of the permanent range, because it’s a lovely shade of coppery brown. The red undertones are downplayed, so it won’t emphasize any redness in the eye, which can sometimes make eyes look tired. Instead, this has just enough sheen to brighten with enough lightness to be an alternative to both black and brown.  The pigmentation was excellent–I was able to get a fully opaque line of color in one stroke with the 263 angled brush.  It wore for an impressive ten hours when I tested its long-wearing claim yesterday!

Not Quite Black, Not Quite Brown Eyeliner

MAC Local Wares Fluidline ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “dirty olive with multidimensional pearl.” It’s a muted dark brown with a gray tinge and subtle gold sparkle. The sparkle isn’t really noticeable once it is applied. It reminded me of CoverGirl Brown, without the shimmer. This collection seems to lean on the warmer side, but this eyeliner reads cooler on me–it actually looks almost gray when I tried it out.

Fluidline is a gel eyeliner that’s supposed to be long-wearing and smudge-proof. It comes inside a clear glass jar with a black screw-top lid. Local Wares has a creamy, pliable texture that glides on and goes on mostly opaque (I used MAC’s 263 brush to apply to my lower lash line), though I did need to go back to get a fully opaque line.  There was no skipping or dragging, because it has a delightfully creamy consistency.  It wore for eight hours without smudging, migrating, or fading when I tested it yesterday.

This collection also includes Dark Diversion, which I’ve reviewed previously, and Rich Ground, which I did buy as well since I can’t remember reviewing it before–though Rich Ground is part of the permanent range.

	It's a nice alternative to black--it's not gray, not brown, and definitely not black. There's a soft quality to the color, but it still manages to retain enough depth to define the eyes.

MAC Chen Man Love & Water Collection: Waveline Fluidline

MAC Waveline Fluidline ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a permanent product (and has been for awhile) that is getting repromoted in the new Love & Water Collection. MAC describes this shade as a “navy blue with low level gold pearl.” It’s a rich navy blue with just a touch of purple–it’s barely there but with the right combination of colors could be pulled out. It has good opacity in a single pass and is easily built up in color. MAC Prussian is similar, though perhaps a little more noticebly purple.

I love MAC’s Fluidline formula; it’s my favorite gel eyeliner, even though there are several excellent gel eyeliners, this one always tops my list because the formula is top notch and the price is considerably less than higher-end brands that have comparable formulas. For example, Bobbi Brown’s Gel Eyeliners are amazing, but ultimately wear the same (all-day) as Fluidlines–they’re just more expensive. To be fair, Bobbi Brown has a much better range of colors than Fluidline, which is sorely lacking in permanent shade selections. Fluidlines are creamy, easy to apply, and wear all day long without smudging or fading.

This collection features three new and limited edition shades of MAC Fluidline ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.). These shades include: Added Goodness (blackened mauve), Midnight Snack (soft black), and Wholesome (blackened brown). Fluidline is a gel eyeliner that’s supposed to be long-wearing and is housed in a small glass jar.

• Added Goodness is a blackened-brown mauve that almost looks taupe in some lighting. There’s mauve, black, brown, and gray all mixed into a very interesting, complex shade that does retain some of that complexity even once applied. It’s dark and lines well, but it’s softer (and yet still has some intensity) compared to full-on black. It’s a lot like Bobbi Brown Black Mauve. Stila Starry is also similar, in liquid form, with more of a mauve look.
• Midnight Snack is a deep, dark gray with silver shimmer. I couldn’t think of a dupe for this one — a lot of the gray eyeliners I have are much lighter.
• Wholesome is a intense blackened brown with a natural sheen. It seems like it’s deeper, darker compared to Dip Down–more like if you mixed Dip Down and Blacktrack together.  MAC Avenue is cooler-toned, not as dark.

The majority of Fluidlines perform really well and live up to the brand’s claims. MAC’s form of gel eyeliner is easily one of the best on the market from my experience. The price point makes it very attractive, too. I’ve had many for years, and I haven’t had any problems with the product drying out over time. It’s a smooth, creamy formula that applies well with a stiff eyeliner brush to the upper lash line. I’ve also worn it as an eyeshadow base and on the lower lash line without problems.

MAC Fall Colour: Ash Violet Fluidline

MAC Ash Violet Fluidline ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described simply as a “blackened purple.” It’s a new and limited edition shade from the MAC Fall Colour Collection, which debuts in North America on September 29th, 2011 and will roll out internationall in October. There is another fluidline, but it’s the ever-permanent Blacktrack. It’s housed in a small glass jar with a black rubberized screw-on lid. Fluidlines are a gel eyeliner formula that works a treat; I’ve always had great success with the formula over the years. It’s creamy and blendable, but it sets and stays in place all day long.

I’m surprised MAC did not include any word to indicate this is a shimmery fluidline–maybe the word pearlized or shimmer should have appeared. Nonetheless, it’s a blackened purple with very subtle red undertones flecked with silver and burgundy-red micro-shimmer. I was concerned it would have fall out issues, but I’m pleased to report that all was well. I wore it all day on the lower lash line and didn’t find that shimmer traveled at all.

I find it has good pigmentation when I used it as an eyeliner (and I used the new 211 brush), though it looks slightly sheer even in the heavier swatch. I will say the shimmer doesn’t translate much on the eye; it just looks like purple-tinted black.  It seems like it’s a slightly redder version of Waveline (which I don’t think I own) but darker than Non-Conformist (which I don’t own).

	I wish the sparkling effect you see swatched translated better when it is actually applied as eyeliner. If you used it as an eyeshadow base, you would definitely get more of that effect.
