MAC Fabulous Felines: Video Review

As promised, here is my video review for the new MAC collection.  I tried to get through it as quickly as possible, and yet it still ended up being 32 minutes long.  Whew!  Grab lunch, coffee, carrot sticks… and maybe a merit badge if you actually watch the whole thing

MAC Fabulous Felines: Overall Review & Recommendations

OVERALL, Fabulous Felines has a lot of tones and shades perfect for autumn and certainly a plethora of products to choose from. Despite some of the darker and deeper tones, the collection feels rather sheer, muted, and tame. It doesn’t feel like a bold, rich mix of colors once you actually start to swatch through some of the products. Burmese Beauty is a set of products that easily work for both cooler and warmer skin tones, while Palace Pedigreed complements cooler skin tones best and Leopard Luxe for warmer skin tones. Keep in mind that this doesn’t mean you can’t wear cooler-toned products on your warmer skin!

The SUPERSLICK LIQUID EYE LINERS have a very watery, thin consistency that’s soaked into a long, narrow-tipped pen. The applicator is soft against the skin, and it has enough give to allow you to maneuver around the natural curves of the eye lid. With a light hand, you can get a very thin, precise line, but you can more easily get a thicker line. They’re incredibly smooth to apply, because the consistency is so thin, but it also makes for a very long drying time. The liner was still a bit sticky five minutes after application, though it wasn’t smudging or budging (just sticky to the touch). If you want to use these as a base, I would suggest using a brush or your finger to thin out application so it will dry faster–otherwise it will just crease and dry creased (and then not budge!).

Once dry, these eyeliners are very budge-, smudge-, and crease-resistant. They do seem fairly water-resistant, too. I put it to the accelerated speed test, which is a very hot, steamy shower (about fifteen minutes in length), and it looked as good as new when I stepped out of the shower. I ran my face under the water, splashed it with water, and it passed those tests with flying colors. However, what I will say is that after the shower, it was very easy to rub off the product. This is an eyeliner that reminds me of tube-mascara, which flakes off in tubes with warm water–this product will sort of roll and flake off when you go to remover. I just noticed that post-shower, a simple rub of my finger against my eye lid, and a ton of the liner was flaking off. It’ll hold up if you go swimming, cry, etc., but be careful about how much you rub your eyes afterward. I really like the eyeliners dry very true-to-color and are rather pigmented without having to build up a lot of layers.

I was most disappointed in the eyeshadow quads, because I felt like too many shades applied on the sheerer side and needed layering to get a nice level of pigmentation. None of the quads really stood out to me; there was just something about each one that fell flat for me, so I didn’t even include any in my recommendations. They’re not necessarily skip-worthy, but I feel no pull towards them. I like the pigments, even though over half are repromotes, because nearly all of them nicely pigmented (except Mauvement). The lipsticks and lipglasses have some nice textures, finishes, and a good variety of shades to choose from.

There’s something about this collection that didn’t resonate with me. It’s all very wearable (which isn’t a bad thing!), and I like that the general feel and tone of the collection is just right for fall. As a long-time collector, I’m always eager for new over repromoted items, I recognize the value of repromotes–there are new beauty fans coming into the fold everyday, so it’s a nice opportunity for them to experience old favorites.  It also means less spending for those who have been fans for awhile! I’d rather repromotes than products just renamed!  Unexpectedly, the new eyeliner seems to be the product I liked most.

Even after many years of methodically reviewing MAC collections, the launches like these are still overwhelming.  There is just so much to look at–a lot of information to digest and colors and textures and finishes to dissect.  Not to mention?  Soo cost-prohibitive to buy it all.

(I’m indicating skip on eyeshadows on an individual level, but keep in mind, you can only purchase the quads as-is; so you may find yourself still picking up a quad, even if one color is a skip–similarly, you may skip a quad because you don’t want any overlay.)

• Skip BURMESE BEAUTY EYESHADOW if you have CLUB or BLUE BROWN; the eyeshadow is merely a lighter version of Club and less intense version of Blue Brown pigment.
• Skip PRIZED if you have DAZZLELIGHT or SHROOM; it’s a beautiful satiny highlighter, but it’s easily duped by other existing highlighter shades.
• Skip TO PAMPER if you have CALL MY BLUFF, as they’re very similar.
• Skip PALACE PEDIGREED if you have PLUM DRESSING or NOCTURNELLE, they’re all close siblings.
• Skip RUSSIAN BLUE if you have PLUMAGE, which is a slightly lighter version of Russian Blue but with much better pay off and texture.
• Skip BEST OF BREED if you have CHILLIN’, as they serve essentially the same function, though Chillin’ is shimmer-free.
• Skip DOCILE if you have CULTURED, LUMINARY, ICESCAPE, ETC.; it’s just an icy milky pink with iridescent shimmer–very pretty but there are many past and present options, too.
• Skip LAP OF LUXURY if you have ODYSSEY; though Odyssey is a lipstick, the two are similar enough that you could skip if you’re on a budget.
• Skip STYLE PREDATOR if you have STRAW HARVEST–the two are close in color, but the reflective qualities differ.
• Skip LITHE if you have DAZZLERAY or JARDIN AIRES–unless you want something with less frost in it.
• Skip A QUIET ROAR if you have ALMONDINE; they’re pretty much indistinguishable from each other.
• Skip SCHEMER if you have GOLD DUST–the former seems a little more pigmented, but they’re similar enough.
• Skip POWERFUL if you have INFUSED WITH GLAM; they are so close, I’m not even sure what the difference is between the two.
• Skip OF ROYALTY if you have VG GAGA, SNOB, SAINT GERMAIN, ETC.; they’re all quite similar.

Lipglass ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

• A Quiet Roar is a very pale white gold on lips. It looks a little off to me when I wear it alone, but it could be used to layer over other shades. It reminded me of Almondine (Spring Colour Forecast).
• Schemer is a sheer orange base with flecks of copper and ambered gold shimmer. I found it applied pretty unevenly, and even though I tried to make it even, I couldn’t quite get there. I’d use it as a layering gloss rather than alone. This is very, very similar to Gold Dust (Spring Colour Forecast). This one seems a little more pigmented.
• Wildly Refined is a pinky brown with multicolored shimmer–lots of pink and peach shimmer.  It’s semi-opaque and has a very frosty/shimmery finish.

Lipstick ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

• Drive Me Wild is a reddened coral with gold sheen in a cremesheen finish. Like the other cremesheen finishes in this launch, it doesn’t feel like the typical cremesheen–creamier, smoother, more moisturizing. It reminded me of an orange version of Rose Maiden (Spring Colour Forecast).
• Out Minxed is a sheer whitish shade with lots of multicolored glitter/shimmer with slight yellow undertones in a glaze finish. It’s similar to Liquid Lurex except less glittery and multicolored.
• Powerful is an orange-y copper shade with lots of gold and copper glitter in a dazzle finish. As far as I can tell, it’s pretty much a dead ringer for Infused with Glam. Maybe a smidgen darker, but I don’t think so.
• The Prowl is a semi-sheer red-tinged brown with a glossy, lustre finish. It has flecks of copper and amber shimmer in it. I did find that I had to be careful about pressing my lips together, because the color would look blotchy/streaky easily.

Mineralize Blush ($21.00 U.S. / $25.00 CDN)

• Utterly Game is a peachy orange with very subtle sheen and no real shimmer (maybe a couple flecks here and there).  It can be built up for a more intense look quite easily, so I’d actually use a light hand if you’re on the fairer side.  I saw this on an artist at the store and thought she looked lovely, and she was very pale, but I didn’t love it on me – just made me look a little burnt, ha!

MAC Fabulous Felines: Leopard Luxe Review, Photos, Swatches (Eyes)

Leopard Luxe Eyeshadow Quad ($36.00 U.S. / $43.00 CDN)

• Wild By Nature is a medium-dark nude brown with a matte finish, though it seems like it has just a bit of satin to it.  Reminded me of a lighter Soft Brown.
• Notoriety is a slightly sheer dirty brown with cool undertones and flecks of gold shimmer with a velvet finish. I really hate the pay off of Notoriety, even though it’s an interesting color. This is a repromote from Makeup Art Cosmetics.
• Style Predator is a gold-shimmered medium orange base with a veluxe pearl finish. It reminds me of a darker version of Straw Harvest (Spring Colour Forecast) and more of a gold sheen than Off the Page (Makeup Art Cosmetics).
• Furiously Fabulous is a deep, dark brown-gray with a veluxe pearl finish. This is the best textured eyeshadow of the three quads–it’s smooth and pigmented. I thought it was going to look like Knight Divine from an initial glance, but it’s very different. It’s like Brun and Satin Taupe had a baby.

Superslick Liquid Eye Liner ($17.50 U.S. / $21.00 CDN)

• Pure Show is a true gold, and it seems a little less pigmented than the average Superslick liner — it’s more shimmery with a sheerer color base. It can be layered for a more intense, opaque line, though.
• Marked for Glamour is a darkened gray that almost looks taupe when used lightly.
• On the Hunt is a very deep, dark black.  It has a very semi-glossy look even when dried, but it’s not wet looking (but not 100% matte/flat).

Pigment ($19.50 U.S. / $23.50 CDN)

• Lithe is a lightly shimmered peach-nude. It reminded me of Dazzleray and Jardin Aires pigments (both limited edition)–the texture is much smoother and finer than either of those pigments, and Lithe isn’t as frosty.
• Old Gold is a green-based gold with touches of reddish brown. It flashes a green-gold overall. It’s a very interesting and complex shade; definitely worth a look if you haven’t acquired this previously. This is a permanent shade.

MAC Fabulous Felines: Palace Pedigreed Review, Photos, Swatches (Lips & Cheek)

Lipstick ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

• Aristo-Cat is a semi-opaque played-down pink with mauve and a golden-peach sheen and high frost finish. It has a cooler tone to it, though not overly so (closer to neutral than really cool). This is a very frosty lipstick, so if that’s not your thing, I’d definitely skip this shade. I really like the color, and no immediately dupes are coming to mind — it’s kind of like the cool-toned version of Fresh Salmon (Spring Colour Forecast).
• Cunning is a semi-sheer deep berry red with a supposedly frost finish. This doesn’t feel or look like a frost at all to me–it has more of a glaze or lustre feel and look. I find this shade rather streaky, and it seems to accentuate every single line in my lips. Might be nicer as a stain.
• Of Royalty is a creamy, light-medium pink with subtle blue undertones, so it’s one of those candy pink lipsticks… that actually doesn’t take on an almost purple look (like Saint Germain, Snob, etc.).  However, it is rather similar to that family of shades (Saint Germain, Snob, VG Gaga, etc. etc.).  It has a cremesheen finish.
• Superior is a sheer pink and silvered-white glittered lipstick with a dazzle finish.  It’s more of a layering shade than to be worn alone (and by layering, it helps keep the glitter from migrating elsewhere, too).

Lipglass ($14.50 U.S. / $17.50 CDN)

• Best of Breed is an ultra sheer, pale, cloudy blue with multicolored shimmer, though predominantly white shimmer. It’s similar to Chillin’, but it has shimmer. It will give lips a slightly cooler tone, but overall.
• Docile is a sheer, cool-toned, iridescent pale, milky pink with multicolored shimmer. It reminded me of Icescape, or a lighter, more muted version of Cultured lipglass.
• Lap of Luxury is a reddened berry with multicolored shimmer, though predomindantly darkened pink. It’s semi-opaque, but it does settle a bit into lip lines and can look blotchy if you aren’t careful. I feel like I’ve seen this color but I’m blanking on possible dupes at the moment, but hopefully will have some for you next week when I update the post with missing items. Right now, it reminds me of the lipglass version of Odyssey lipstick.

Mineralize Blush ($21.00 U.S. / $25.00 CDN)

• Pet Me is a soft, medium pink with yellow undertonse, which makes it a warmer pink. It doesn’t appear to have any shimmer, though perhaps a very subtle sheen. Overall, more of a semi-matte finish, though. If you liked Dainty, you’d probably like this shade.

MAC Fabulous Felines: Palace Pedigreed Review, Photos, Swatches (Eyes)

Here’s the first of two posts on the Palace Pedigreed part of the Fabulous Felines Collection.

You can find official promotional photos and information on MAC Fabulous Felines here.  I will not have full collection swatches and photos until I’m able to purchase the missing pieces.  I purchased all of these through Bloomingdale’s, which is selling early online (no idea why).

Palace Pedigreed Eyeshadow Quad ($36.00 U.S. / $43.00 CDN)

• Courtly is a semi-sheer dirty mauve with a satin finish. It seemed rather muted to me, and it took a little extra work to get it to swatch well. The closest permanent shadow I could think of was Seedy Pearl, which has a lot more shimmer, significant pink tones, and an iridescent glow about it that make them quite different in actuality.
• Palace Pedigreed a darkened plum with a soft sheen and satin finish. It reminded me of a darker version of Plum Dressing, less purple Nocturnelle.
• Quite Spoiled is a pinky purple with a soft, satin finish. It has a subtle sheen of shimmer. It reminded me of a purple version of Modest Tone (N Collection).
• Russian Blue is a darkened teal with a matte finish. The pigmentation seems lacking, but when used with a brush, it’s a lot better, though it’s still not quite as pigmented as I’d like. You’ll want to use the pat-and-pack method rather than sweeping this shade on.

Superslick Liquid Eye Liner ($17.50 U.S. / $21.00 CDN)

• Nocturnal is a bright metallic silver with a high frost finish.
• Signature Blue is a medium-dark navy blue with lighter blue micro-shimmer.
• Smoky Heir is a burgundy plum with violet, plum, and purple micro-shimmer.

Pigment ($19.50 U.S. / $23.50 CDN)

• Bloodline is a darkened taupe-brown with a tiny bit of plum. When wet, it can be very intense. If used with a brush like an eyeshadow, it works well in the crease and darkens substantially.
• Mauvement is a chunky brownish mauve with flecks of gold. It’s an interesting shade, but it does have some chunkiness to the texture that can be bothersome.  I’m really annoyed that I can’t find my original jar of Mauvement, because this seems browner than the original; slightly smoother, but still on the chunkier side.
