MAC Fall Colour: Lipglasses

MAC Fall Colour Lipglasses ($14.50 for 0.17 fl. oz.) includes four shades: C-Thru (peachy beige with shimmer), Good Times (pale mauve), Orange Tempera (pale peach), and Pink Fade (pale pink). These are part of the MAC Fall Colour Collection, which debuts in North America on September 29th, 2011 and rolls out internationally in October. C-Thru is part of the permanent collection, the other three are limited edition.

• C-Thru is a milky beige-nude with pale beige-white shimmer. IT’s semi-opaque and does settle a bit into lip lines. This is a permanent shade. MAC on the Scene is similar. Urban Decay Max is a little more opaque and peach-tinted.
• Good Times is a pale, creamy mauve-pink with nearly opaque color coverage. There is enough milkiness that it does settle into lip lines but the more opaque color hides some of it. Good Times is more opaque than MAC Going Casual but less pink than MAC Splashing. FYI, it just came out with MAC Me Over.
• Orange Tempera is a soft, light-medium peach with a creamy look. There is some settling into lip lines but it is on the more opaque side and applies fairly evenly. It is lighter than MAC Illicit.
• Pink Fade is a really cool-toned, blue-based pale pink with a creamy milkiness that encourages settling into lip lines. The coverage is mostly opaque and applies fairly evenly. It is lighter than MAC Viva Glam Gaga. It is a little cooler-toned than MAC Enchantee.

I’m not a big fan of the way MAC’s creamier lipglasses look on lips–they tend to settle into lip lines and apply unevenly. The thickness of the lipglass texture can make it harder to get even color coverage because it doesn’t glide as easily as a thinner gloss would. Lipglass is a sticky formula with a vanilla scent that typically wears three to fours on me. I don’t find the moisturizing, but I don’t usually find them drying either. I recommend creamier shades like these over a lip liner or lipstick.

Bright Makeup: Sky Blues

I got the BLUES! At least, when it comes to the next week… because it’s study, study, STUDY! I feel like my focus is off, too, which is very annoying and frustrating. I managed to get through one outline yesterday, and today, I hope to get through another today… and then start memorizing both!

You will need the following…

• Eyes: MAC Soft Ochre Paint Pot (neutral beige base), MAC Frost Pigment (teal), MAC Vellum Eyeshadow (white with purple flash), MAC Sky Blue Eyeshadow (PRO) (sky blue), MAC Winkle Eyeshadow (periwinkle blue), MAC Atlantic Blue Eyeshadow (PRO) (brightened dark blue), MAC Electric Eel Eyeshadow (bright blue), MAC Shroom Eyeshadow (highlighter), YSL Oriental Blue Dessin du Regard Eyeliner (navy blue), YSL Turquoise Dessin du Regard Eyeliner (teal), MAC NC15/NW20 Chromagraphic Pencil (nude), MAC Plushlash Mascara (black)
• Face: Make Up For Ever HD Foundation (140)
• Cheeks: Dolce & Gabbana Peach Blush (soft beige-pink), Dior Amber Diamond Skin Shimmer (golden highlight)
• Lips: Cle de Peau #101 Extra Silky Lipstick (coral), MAC C-Thru Lipglass (creamy nude), Guerlain Brit Rouge G Lipstick, Guerlain #01 Terracotta Gloss (sheer champagne)
• Brushes: 226 (fluffy crease brush), 219 (pointed crease brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
• Substitutes: N/A

For eyes, start by applying Soft Ochre paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. With the 239 and water-based mixing medium (or water), apply Frost pigment all over the lid area. Using the 239, apply Vellum eyeshadow on the inner third of the eyelid. Next, apply Sky Blue eyeshadow on the middle third of the eyelid and lightly blend with the inner corner. Darken the outer third of the lid with Winkle eyeshadow with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Lightly blend Atlantic Blue eyeshadow, with the 226, into the outer crease and corner. Define the crease by sweeping Electric Eel eyeshadow into the lower crease with the 219. Lightly tap and brush Vellum eyeshadow directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Shroom eyeshadow as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Oriental Blue eyeliner on the outer half of the lower lash line and Turquoise eyeliner on the inner half of the lower lash line. Apply NC15/NW20 pencil on the lower waterline to make eyes pop. Finish by sweeping lashes with Plushlash mascara.

For cheeks, apply Peach blush to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116. Then, highlight cheekbones by sweeping Amber Diamond with the 165.

For lips, apply #101 lipstick first, and then layer C-thru lipiglass for a complementing lip. An alternative lip could be created by first applying Brit lipstick layered with #01 gloss.

MAC Pret-a-Papier Collection: Lipglasses Review, Photos, Swatches

Three lipglasses released with this collection, but being the coral fiend I am, Fold and Tuck was the one that I liked the most. It was a lovely shade of coral that was there but not bright with good color. I love the concept of Pret-a-Papier, but it would definitely look better over a lipstick.

Lipglass ($14.00 U.S. / $16.50 CDN)

• C-Thru is a creamy, milky flesh-toned shade. It’s very much a nude lipglass and can settle into lip lines, so it’s a better shade for layering than to wear alone. This is a permanent shade from MAC’s lipglass collection, so no need to rush for this one. Also, though it’s pigmented in a sense, it’s still going to show some of your natural lip color–the more pigmented your lip color, the less nude this will be, though it will still tone your natural lip color down.
• Fold and Tuck is a beautiful pinky coral with soft golden flecks. It’s everything I wanted Lychee Luxe to be (while pretty, it’s not the coral I’ve been wanting to see from MAC). It’s the most pigmented of the three glosses, and it’s only a little warm, so both warm and cool skin tones can easily wear this.
• Pret-a-Papier is a darkened amber-reddish bronze. It reminds me of past shades like Liqueur, not so much in terms of color, but in the way it looks and feels and works.

How-to: Smokey Eyes

You will need the following…

• Eyes: Soft Ochre paint pot (neutral base), Electra eyeshadow (bright silver), Silver Ring (dark silver), Carbon eyeshadow (matte black), Shroom eyeshadow (highlighter), Graphblack technakohl (black), Blacktrack fluidline (black), Zoomlash mascara (black)
• Cheeks: Well Dressed blush (soft cool pink), Dior Rose Diamond Skin Shimmer (pink highlighter)
• Lips: Sandy B lipstick (pinky nude), C-Thru lipglass (nude)
• Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 226 (fluffy crease brush), 214 (smudge brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)

Quick Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid as the base with the 249. On the inner lid, apply Electra eyeshadow using the 239. Apply Silver Ring eyeshadow to the middle of the lid, extending to the outer lid. Darken the outer lid with Carbon eyeshadow using the 239. Darken crease with Carbon eyeshadow using the 226. Sweep Shroom eyeshadow underneath the brow bone to highlight. Smudge Silver Ring eyeshadow on the lower lash line using the 219 brush. Finish with Graphblack technakohl on lower lash line, Blacktrack fluidline on upper lash line, and Zoomlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Well Dressed blush using the 129, then highlight with Dior Rose Diamond Skin Shimmer with the 188. Apply Sandy B lipstick to lips, and then top with C-Thru lipglass for color and shine.

See step-by-step directions…

1. Start with a clean eye space.

2. With your 249 brush, apply a thin layer of Soft Ochre paint pot all over the lid, from lash line to brow bone.

3. Make sure you apply the paint pot to your brow bone area.

4. Brush out the base color to the outer lid.

5. This is what it should look like.

6. Pick up a good amount of Electra eyeshadow with your 239 brush. Apply it to the inner half of your lid.

7. This is what it will look like.

8. Using the same 239 brush, pick up Silver Ring eyeshadow. Apply it to the outer half of the eye lid.

9. This is how it should look like.

10. With the 239 brush, pick up just a little bit of Carbon eyeshadow. Hold the brush horizontally and begin applying it to the outer third of the crease.

11. Blend it into the crease by moving side-to-side.

12. Make sure you blend it enough so that the line isn’t too visible.

13. This is what you should have.

14. Repeat the same method with more Carbon eyeshadow.

15. Blend Carbon into the crease.

16. This is what it should look like.

17. Apply Shroom eyeshadow with the 239 brush on your brow bone to highlight.

18. Brush out the highlight color so it applies evenly to the entire brow bone.

19. This is what it should look like.

20. Gently apply a dusting of Silver Ring eyeshadow to the lower portion of the crease, just to add more dimension.

21. This is what you should have.

22. Apply intense black liner on your lower lash line if desired.

23. Use a firm smudging brush or a pointed pencil brush (like the 219) to smudge the black liner with Silver Ring eyeshadow.

24. This is how it should look.

25. With the 266 brush, pick up Blacktrack fluidline. Begin applying it to the inner portion of your upper lash line.

26. In either quick, short strokes or one fluid stroke, move the brush towards the outer upper lash line.

27. Take the 266 brush and create a diagonal line on your outer lid for the “wing” of the liner. You want it to be a continuation of your lower lash line, extending towards the end of your brow. (It’s like you were drawing a line to connect the two, but you don’t actually do so.)

28. This is how it would look. (Albeit, mine is not quite perfect here.)

29. From the tip of the winged line, draw a curved line back to the middle of the lid — it should look something like the above image.

30. Fill it in with Blacktrack fluidline.

31. This is how it should look like. Add mascara and/or false lashes as desired to finish the eye.

It’s been SO long since I’ve done the “traditional” smokey eye, so I had the urge to try it out again I’m spending my weekend cramming/studying for my Stats and Managerial Accounting finals on Monday (yay, back-to-back finals, so awesome!). Apply Sandy B lipstick to lips, and then top with C-Thru lipglass for color and shine.
