2N, Bait, Cult of Cherry, Emancipation, Flash of Flesh, Icescape

MAC By Request – Lipglasses Review, Photos, Swatches

MAC By Request is a collection that’s voted on by the fans–there are 18 shades of lipstick, lipglass, and eyeshadow that MAC has listed for grabs, and your votes will determine the top three from each product type that will go on to be launched in an online exclusive, limited edition collection in August. Voting is open and closes on March 30th and users can vote once per product category per day. Not sure where to cast your vote? I’ve got the goods on the six lipglasses up for a comeback! :) These just arrived from MAC – all the labels just say “sample” on the back, so I don’t know if these were a recent production or if these were from original runs. I’m thinking they’re probably from short runs – perhaps just to ensure the colors could still be made or have the recipes ready to go into production as soon as voting is over.

  • 2N is a peachy orange with soft white micro-shimmer. It looks darker swatched than it does on the lips, where it turns to a brownish peach with mostly opaque color coverage. MAC Ready or Not is similar but a little peachier. MAC Naked Space is lighter.
  • Bait is a light-medium pink with multi-colored shimer and subtle yellow undertones. MAC The Wee Coquette is lighter, bluer. MAC Casual Air is a bit more plum. MAC Good Times is more mauve. MAC Pink Fade is bluer and a touch lighter.
  • Cult of Cherry is a blue-based pink-red with shimmer with semi-opaque color coverage. MAC DRiven By Love is more opaque, deeper. Chanel Triomphal is a bit redder. Milani Photo Flash is pinker.
  • Emancipation is pink-tinted beige with champagne shimmer. On lips, it tends to look like a milky pink on mine, but it depends on your natural lip color–this shade will definitely change based on the underlying tone of your lips. MAC Fresh Air is similar but a little lighter. Urban Decay Peroxide is similar but sheerer.
  • Flash of Flesh is a pink and copper shimmered peach-orange. MAC Good Lovin’ is a little less pink and lighter. MAC Liqueur is several shades darker.
  • Icescape is a icy pink with multi-colored shimmer. It’s semi-sheer on lips. MAC Going Casual has a similar effect.

MAC Lipglass is vanilla-scented, on the thicker side as far as consistency goes, and has a very tacky texture.  It’s one of the stickier glosses on the market, though it wears three to four hours without a problem as a result, even some of the lighter shades.  Some shades are very sheer while others are completely opaque, so pigmentation can be a mixed bag with this formula.

Of all the comeback products, I think the lipglass category was the most disappointing. Icescape? Really? I didn’t even know that was a big deal! I can see why some of these shades may have been popular, but you can see in the photo above–three of the lipglasses look awfully similar. Here are some shades I think would have made a big splash: Bizaarish (Smoke Signals ’07), Check Please (Tailormade ’05), Greenhouse (‘Fab Florals ’02), Headliner (Diana Ross ’05), Magnetique (Belle Azure ’05), Moonbathe (Moonbathe ’07), She Loves Candy (Hello Kitty ’09), or Tartlette (High Tea ’04).

I hope to do some comparison swatches over the next couple of days for the shades I do have the older/originals of. Of these, I don’t think I have Bait or Flash of Flesh but should have the other four.

B+
This is a very tame set of six to bring back--I think having pink and nude is great, but I think they could have had more variety within the six they chose to potentially bring back. MAC puts out numerous nudes and pinks every year, so slightly more original shades would have been great to see return!

MAC Warm & Cozy Collection
MAC Lipglasses: Feeling Dreamy, 2N, Light That Fire, 3N

MAC Warm & Cozy Collection: Lipglasses

At first glance, I thought I would be really in love with the lipglasses, but they weren’t as much my cup of tea as I had hoped. My favorite was definitely Light That Fire, while 2N was next.

  • Feeling Dreamy is a milky beige-pink with iridescent icy pink shimmer. It really has a tendency to settle into lip lines, so it wasn’t looking so dreamy on me (oh, pun!). It isn’t a particularly original shade – kind of typical of MAC.
  • 2N is a creamy fleshy peach-beige. It also has a milky look, so it also settled into lines like Feeling Dreamy, but it’s less noticeable from afar so it’s wearable on its own. I had 2N from the N Collection originally, but it looked different from this one (lighter, paler). I’m not sure if mine has changed over time or something, so I only photographed and swatched the one that released with this launch, for reference.
  • Light That Fire is a bright orange-based coral with lots of orange and gold shimmer. It’s very pigmented for a gloss, actually. It has a grittier texture than the other three glosses, because it does have a healthy dose of shimmer. It was like an orange version of Lychee Luxe. It’s a shade that appeals to me, but it’s not one I’m going to run out and buy a back-up of. I do like that I haven’t seen this shade too often (if at all–nothing comes to mind immediately) from MAC, though.
  • 3N is a brownish shade with orange–beige to keep it from being straight brown. It has lots of gold shimmer, and it looks very creamy on, despite the shimmer. This one looked the best on my lips — even coverage, softened edges, and didn’t settle into lines. It was also quite pigmented. When I compared 3N to my original 3N from the N Collection, it seemed about the same.

Back In Time with N Collection

Do you ever like to go through your stash and rediscover old favorites? Since I wasn’t wearing makeup (to help clear up my acne) for so long, I was really itching for *some* makeup to play with… which meant lips! I didn’t want to go too bold with my lip choices, because without more makeup to complement the bold lips, it would make my face look incomplete (at least to me).

This leads us to 3N Lipstick paired with 2N Lipglass! Think of 3N as one of those “my lips but better” (MLBB), with a little extra pink to give lips a natural flush. 2N Lipglass adds the sparkle and the shimmer, complementing the pink hues with some beigey-pink. Add in multi-colored shimmer and you’ve got an easy, oh-so-wearable combination perfect for a neutral look or on its own.

If you can’t get your hands on 3N Lipstick, try Hug Me lipstick instead. If 2N Lipglass eludes you, try Luminary lustreglass (it’ll work well with this combination in particular).

Despite spending most of my day with my head in the beauty realm, I honestly don’t find I wear full makeup as often as I used to. Maybe it’s because I’m busier, or maybe it’s because I’m lazier (I’m going with the latter), but nonetheless, I tend to go for a minimal face. There are even a few days (when my skin is being nice) where I will even go sans makeup altogether!

What exactly does the “I’m Not Really Wearing Makeup” look entail? I have discovered that with the right mix of products you can get that totally natural look and look good in it.

I used Studio Fix Fluid in NC30 applied in dabs using the 194 brush, then buffed in with the 182 brush. Sculpt sculpting powder to contour cheeks using the 168 brush. Select Sheer Loose Powder in NC25 applied using the 187 brush (stippling brush). Dior Skin Shimmer in Amber Diamond with the 150 brush on apples and high planes of cheeks. Espresso and Carbon eyeshadows to fill in brows with a 266 brush. I finished by wearing 3N lipstick with 2N lipglass on lips.

What do you need? Since we are not all the same shade of skintone, nor do we all own the same products, let me give you some more generic ideas as to what you need for that super natural look.

I used Your Ladyship pigment on lid, Nanogold eyeshadow on inner lid, Modest Tone eyeshadow on middle of lid, Neutral Pink eyeshadow on outer lid, Dark Edge eyeshadow lightly in the outer crease, Nanogold eyeshadow above crease and on brow and lower lash line, and Feline kohl power on lower lash line. I wore Light Flush mineralize skinfinish with Sculpt sculpting powder to contour. I had 3N lipstick with 2N lipglass on my lips.
