A Sparkling, Shimmery Pink of a Gloss

L’Oreal Dazzle Me Infallible Lipgloss ($9.99 MSRP for 0.21 fl. oz.) is a muted, medium-dark pink with fuchsia and silver shimmer and sparkle. Burberry Hibiscus is similar in color but has no shimmer at all. Bobbi Brown Electric Violet is lighter and has finer shimmer (and less of it). MAC Radiant Jewels is redder with less sparkle. MAC Electric Fuchsia is lighter.

The Infallible Lipgloss formula is supposed to offer eight-hour wear with sheer, luminous color. I wish they wouldn’t make such an extravagant claim, because eight-hours of shiny, glossy wear? is not something you find often, if at all. This shade wears well for five hours, but the glossiness fades after three and a half hours, though the sparkle does not travel. After eight hours, there are still a few bits of shimmer but the color is gone. The texture is thin but incredibly sticky. Dazzle Me is semi-sheer in color with enough sparkle to give lips a good shimmer and shine.

I have such a love/hate relationship with this gloss formula, because the shimmer they use sparkles beautifully, but the thin consistency means you can feel the grit of the sparkle. I noticed the grit of the sparkle less so in this shade than I have in others, and the scent was sweet and fruity but not medicinal (some of them are that way).  It comes with a tapered, angled doe-foot applicator (similar to Lancome’s Color Fever Glosses).

A Barely-There, Sheer Gold-Shimmered Gloss

L’Oreal Something Shiny Infallible Lipgloss ($9.99 for 0.21 fl. oz.) is sheer, gold-shimmered gloss. There is a very slight yellow tint to the otherwise clear base color. MAC Phiff is similar, just has larger sparkle particles. Bobbi Brown Bare has a colored mix of sparkle.

Something Shiny adds a modicum of shimmer, but it primarily adds shine.  It also seemed to warm up my natural lip color (giving it a warmer undertone, which is nice, given my natural lip color is corpse-like!).  Because the formula is slightly drying, it’s better layered over a lipstick to add a healthy dose of high-gloss shine.  The gloss has a thin consistency and gritty, tacky texture.  This particular shade smelled mostly sweet and fruity without the medicinal quality that some of the other shades have had.  When I tried wearing Something Shiny, the shine lasted for three hours, and the shimmer had vanished by the fourth hour–not quite the eight-hour wear promised.

A Sparkling Beige Best for Layering

L’Oreal Pretty Precious Infallible Lipgloss ($9.99 for 0.21 fl. oz.) is a soft pink-beige with white and silver shimmer and sparkle. Bobbi Brown Firefly has pink iridescence. NARS Albatross/ has gold shimmer instead of silver. MAC Jana has gold sparkle.

It’s a rather subtle gloss on, and while it can be worn alone, it is a nice way to add a layer of sparkle to your favorite lip color. It will work well with berries and pinks. On my lips, it’s semi-sheer; it lightens my natural lip color by adding a ton of white/silver shimmer. Pretty Precious lasted four and a half hours on my lips when I wore it, which was above average for a gloss in this kind of color/sheerness–just keep in mind that L’Oreal says you’ll get eight-hour wear.

The Infallible Lipgloss formula is thin, tacky, and a little drying. The way the sparkles catch the light is what makes these glosses really lovely to look at, though I’m not a fan of the overall way they feel and wear. The thinner texture means the sparkle feels gritty on the lips. I wish the scent was more pleasing; it’s a medicinal but sweet, fruity aroma that does linger a bit.

A Budget-Friendly Sparkling Red Gloss for the Holidays

L’Oreal Sparkle Frenzy Infallible Lipgloss ($9.99 for 0.21 fl. oz.) is a bright red with gold and ruby red shimmer and sparkle. The underlying color is blue-based, but the addition of fiery gold shimmer makes it appear almost orange-toned at times. Dior Ceremony Red is bluer-based. MAC Ready to Roam is redder. MAC Totally Fab is more orange-toned. YSL Golden Red is similar but more orange-toned.

This is a new and limited edition shade for the holidays, which I grabbed at my local CVS a couple of weeks ago. I have a love/hate relationship with L’Oreal’s Infallible Lipglosses, because initially, I love, love them. They’re delightfully sparkly and pretty on, but they’re thin and have a tendency to feel gritty because of the thinness and high sparkle content. I feel like I fuss with my lips a bit more whenever I test one of these. There’s also this medicinal smell that sometimes reads “something sweet and fruity” or like menthol (honestly, it gives me an Icy/Hot kind of vibe, just more muted).

Sparkle Frenzy is semi-opaque and went on fairly evenly.  The tapered applicator holds a lot of product and allows for precision along the edges of the lip and the cupid’s bow.  This shade wore well for six hours, and it was in need of a touch-up after seven hours.  It can handle some drinking, but it won’t make it through a meal.  I love the way it looks, but I’m not keen on how it feels on: gritty, sticky, and a bit drying. While it wears well compared to the average gloss, L’Oreal advertises these as having eight-hour wear.
