OCC Androgyne Lip Tar Stained Gloss
OCC Androgyne Lip Tar Stained Gloss

OCC Androgyne Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “psychedelic orange gel.” It’s a brightened tangerine orange with strong yellow undertones and a glossy sheen. It’s like the color of an orange popsicle. Guerlain Tangerine Vlam is sheerer and darker, more red-toned. MAC Sounds Like Noise is very similar in color, but it is a lipstick, so it isn’t glossy. OCC Banjee is yellower, lighter.

New Wave Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “glassy neon pink.” It’s a brightened, pinky-red with subtle cool undertones and a glossy shine. Clarins Grenadine is slightly lighter and has shimmer. MAC Impassioned is similar, slightly pinker. MAC Gimme That! has iridescent shimmer. Illamasqua Petulant is less red.

Voyeur Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “yellow glaze [that] creates a peach neutral.” It’s a warm yellow in the tube, and when applied, it will definitely change and adapt based on your natural lip color–it turns into a light yellow-orange on me. OCC Banjee is a bit bolder, but it is similar in color applied–it’s the only shade I could think of that came anywhere close to this.

The consistency of the Lip Tar Stained Glosses is lightweight, thin, and neither hydrating nor drying.  I’ve had fairly consistent wear with these as well; Androgyne and Voyeur lasted five hours, while New Wave lasted six and a half hours.  New Wave left behind a stain for longer than the other two, which wasn’t surprising, given how bold and deep the color was.  The glossiness lasts for about two-thirds of the wear time of each shade, and it then reduces to a soft sheen.  I think they’re easier to use than Lip Tars, and they look very jelly-like on lips (but with a much thinner consistency, so it does not feel jelly-like!).

Burberry Peony Rose (302) Lip Velvet
Burberry Peony Rose (302) Lip Velvet

Burberry Peony Rose (302) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a softened, rosy pink with a matte finish and warm undertones. NARS Tolede is warmer. Tom Ford Indian Rose is pinker. Revlon Pink Truffle is glossier and slightly darker. Bobbi Brown Nude Rose is darker. NARS Montego Bay is very similar but a touch pinker.

Burberry’s Lip Velvet is one of my favorite matte lipstick formulas, because it’s rich in color payoff, long-wearing, and comfortable to wear. The consistency is creamy enough that it glides on easily without tugging or pulling on the lip, but it stays put and doesn’t slide around. This also helps it stay on better and for longer–Peony Rose lasted nearly six hours on me and was somewhat hydrating while worn. It doesn’t feel heavy or thick, but it has full color coverage.

The formula is excellent and delivers on every aspect Burberry promised: long-wearing, rich color, hydrating and has a comfortable-to-wear formula.

OCC Meta Lip Tar Stained Gloss
OCC Meta Lip Tar Stained Gloss

OCC Meta Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “red orange shellac.” It’s a bold, brightened orange-toned red with a luminous sheen. Dior Ceremony Red is bluer-based and shimmery. Chanel Exces is sheerer but similar in color (not as bright). OCC Harlot is similar in color (but a true Lip Tar). Illamasqua Fume isn’t quite as warm-toned.

It has a really lightweight feel and thin texture, and for the first three to four hours, there’s a natural sheen–not full-on glossy shine but still rather luminous. After, it has a subtler sheen and looks like a lip stain. The color coverage is much like a stained glass window; translucent enough that the natural lip color comes through somewhat but still a lot of color density. Meta lasts for six and a half hours well, and the stain lingers for another hour or so. It’s neither hydrating nor drying.

Chanel Crushed Cherry Glossimer
Chanel Crushed Cherry Glossimer

Chanel Crushed Cherry Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is a bold, berry-red with a glossy shine. MAC Plum Fun is more plum and has shimmer. MAC Lasting Achievement is much darker and has shimmer. MAC Rebel is purper. NARS Bougainville is slightly more berry-hued. NYX Burgundy is not quite as red and has shimmer.

It was such a happy moment to apply this shade, because it’s a very opaque Glossimer, and I feel like we haven’t seen enough of these in recent history (to balance out all of the ultra sheer shades). It’s also an interesting shade as it has no shimmer, just semi-opaque color with a high shine finish. The consistency is lightweight, medium in thickness, and applies incredibly evenly for something this deep. There is very faint settling of the color into lip lines, but at a distance, it is hardly noticeable. Crushed Cherry wore for five and a half hours for me, and it was lightly hydrating during that time.

Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer
Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer

Tom Ford Pink Lust Lip Lacquer ($30.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “light pink with golden pearl.” It’s a warm, peachy-beige with pink, gold, and champagne micro-shimmer. Revlon Sunset Peach is more orange. MAC Pure Flattery is also more orange. Guerlain Sable Show is lighter. Bobbi Brown Pink Gold is similar but slightly pinker. Hourglass Imagine is more golden. MAC Nymphette is slightly pinker and more frosted. Cle de Peau #2 has a stronger golden sheen.

This feels and acts like a lipgloss-balm hybrid product but, on the upside, comes with the amount more typical of a balm (0.50 fl. oz., whereas a lot of glosses are around 0.20 fl. oz.), which makes this a “good deal,” as far as Tom Ford Beauty products go. It’s an easy-to-wear color that blends with the natural pink tones to the lip and adds a frosted shimmer and subtle sheen to reflect light. The coverage is semi-sheer to semi-opaque; there’s enough shimmer that it helps to disguise my lip freckle but not so much coverage that it will mask the natural lip color. (And if you have more pigmented lips, I would expect this to adapt and look more like your natural lip color slightly lightened with shimmer.) It’s lightweight, emollient, and wears two to three hours on me (I normally see an average of three to four hours for gloss). It was nicely hydrating, though, which was a nice benefit.

OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss
OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss

OCC Jealous Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “popsicle pink/red.” It’s a bright pop of warm red with a glossy, jelly-like finish. MAC Strawberry Malt is pinker. MAC Strut Your Stuff is slightly more orange but similar in color. Illamasqua Fume is redder. MAC Russian Red is slightly darker. Illamasqua Temper is a touch more orange but similar in the way it looks.

Stained Gloss is a take on Lip Tar with a glossier finish, more translucent quality to the color, and a color that will stain and isn’t sheer but is reminiscent of stained glass windows. Yes, stained glass windows certainly come to mind! They have just a little translucency that gives them a lighter look, almost jelly-like, while still yielding the kind of pigment that made Lip Tars famous in the first place. Jealous had a thinner consistency that was lighter in weight and in appearance. I actually feel like the new formula may appeal to those who find the original Lip Tars too much, too pigmented, or felt like they took too much work.

The glossy finish lasts three to four hours, while the lip color lingers on for much longer (another four, for a total of eight hours of wear). It also stains, so there is still even color beyond eight hours, but it looks more like a stain and less rich/intense as it did when initially applied. It was neither drying nor hydrating while I wore it, and it started to feel more like a regular Lip Tar once the glossiness wore away (I’d say the later couple of hours of Lip Tar’s wear). I do wish they were hydrating, though, because as they wear so long, that added moisture would be a treat.
