Per readers’ requests, I’m posting this quick post that features photos and swatches of the Kaleidoscope, but I’m not writing a full review unless it is re-released and becomes available again I will say it is up to par with Le Metier de Beaute’s eyeshadow quality and what I’ve experienced in the past, so you can read previous reviews here. All of the swatches have been put into the Swatch Gallery, so you can compare and look for similar shades based on what interests you!

• Oyster is a cool-toned, almost pewter-gray with a hint of beige-champagne shimmer. ISuper complex; looks different all the time. Compare here in the Swatch Gallery.
• Sapphire is a copper and violet-shimmered navy blue with purplish edging. Another complex shade. Best applied wet–a little drier than other shades I’ve tried. Compare here in the Swatch Gallery.
• Autumn Rust is a medium-dark golden brown with a frosted finish. Compare here in the Swatch Gallery.
• Matte Plum is a medium-dark red-toned purple with a satiny finish (doesn’t look matte to me). Compare here in the Swatch Gallery.

Le Metier de Beaute Bauhaus Eye Kaleidoscope ($95.00 for 0.56 oz. includes four eyeshadows: Axiom (sublime bronzed umber), Graphic (silver liquid metal), Crucible (rich pomegranate), and Genre (deep gunmetal).

Axiom is a warmed-up, bronze-shimmered, medium-dark brown with orange-tan undertones. It has full pigmentation both wet and dry, and when used damp, the metallic sheen becomes more pronounced. Chanel Intuition #4 is darker, redder-toned. Tarte Brilliant Bronze is less warm-toned. Clarins Enchanted Summer #3 is is very similar. Buxom Golden Retriever is more frosted and less orange-y. Giorgio Armani Gold Blitz #5 is very similar–more metallic in finish.

Graphic is a soft, cool-toned gray with a silver shimmer and sheen. When applied dry, it has decent color payoff but feels a touch powdery. When applied damp, it becomes more metallic and, as a result, looks lighter. L’Oreal Primped & Precious is similar in color but more metallic. Giorgio Armani #22 is slightly lighter.

Crucible is a darkened cranberry red with red-brown undertones and a frosted finish. It had good pigmentation when applied dry and wet, but it was better applied wet. It was a smidgen powdery dry, and the damp application made it perfectly smooth. Cinderella Rococo is browner. MAC Star Violet is very similar. Maybelline Pomegranate Punk is a bit purpler and a cream product.

Genre is a deep, rich, blackened gray with a soft, pearly finish. The color payoff is excellent both wet and dry, and I didn’t notice much (if any) difference between either application. Tarte Intergalactic is lighter. Urban Decay Black Market is a warmer gray. Bobbi Brown Gunmetal is a smidgen lighter.

While buying an Eye Kaleidoscope is no doubt painful at $95 in a single go, at least you’re getting half an ounce worth of eyeshadow. I purchased mine from Nordstrom, which is sold out, but it’s still available at counters and at other online retailers like Saks. Each eyeshadow is 0.14 oz. in size, which is nearly triple the average full-sized eyeshadow–it’s only $169/oz. (whereas brands like MAC and Urban Decay are $300/oz. and $380/oz., respectively), but some of that is offset by the fact that many of us are unlikely to finish the majority of eyeshadows we own. If you are, though, it’s superb deal!

I’m a big fan of Le Metier de Beaute’s eyeshadow formula, because they’re incredibly soft, finely-milled, and buttery–super dense and richly pigmented–and they can be used wet or dry.  They’re also designed to be layered over each other, too, so they don’t turn muddy.  The soft textures make every shade a cinch to blend and diffuse around the edges, but the pigmentation means you can get rich color without having to pack it on.  Graphic and Crucible felt just a smidgen powdery but not to a degree that it impacted application–I didn’t have any fall out during application despite applying all of the eyeshadows dry.  I wore Bauhaus and had it last a full nine hours without creasing or fading (no primer).

A Palette Inspired by the French Cinema

Le Metier de Beaute Nouvelle Vague Kaleidoscope Eye Kit ($95.00 for 0.49 oz.) consists of four eyeshadows inspired by “the spark present throughout the French cinema New Wave.” The colors can be worn alone or layered over each other (part of the brand’s methodology).

Nouvelle is described as a “sheer mink negative.” It’s a warm peach with a frosted finish and a kiss of pink. The color payoff is rich and opaque, not quite the sheer color they described it as (so for some, this is probably a good thing!). It had a lovely soft, finely-milled texture that felt buttery and smooth. Chanel Complice is similar but less reflective, a smidgen darker. theBalm Stubborn is warmer, less pink. Urban Decay Scratch is fairly close, though a little pinker.

Gamine is described as a “satin pink celluloid.” It is a blue-based cotton candy pink with a soft frosted finish. The color payoff was fantastic, and the texture was soft, smooth, and blendable. MAC Dynamic Duo 4 is sheerer, less frosted. Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse is similar, a smidgen darker. MAC for Miss Piggy is sheerer, less frosted. MAC Feather Pink is cooler-toned, almost lilac.

Icon is described as a “silky matte Parisian mauve.” It’s a soft pink-tinged mauve with a matte finish. It had a soft, smooth, and finely-milled texture that yielded rich color. Inglot #399 is frosted. Guerlain Boulevard du Montparnasse is similar but satiny. MAC Neo Nebula is shimmery. Urban Decay Bordello is darker and frosted.

Fin is described as a “smoldering black carbon.” It’s a rich, deep, dark black with a fine dusting of multi-colored shimmer (which you don’t really notice when it is applied). The pigmentation in this is so, so rich. The texture is soft, smooth, and not a bit powdery. As far as comparably rich in pigment black eyeshadows go, Urban Decay Blackout is similar but has a more matte finish; Milani Pitch Black is also similar; and Make Up For Ever #4 is entirely matte and has no shimmer at all.

The palette is high quality from top to bottom, and really, the only reason it lost any points was because of Nouvelle, which was described as sheer but is, in fact, quite pigmented–for most, this will be received as great news.  When I tested these shades for wear, they wore for eight hours with no fading or creasing.

Each eyeshadow is just over 0.12 oz., which is double the size of most eyeshadows.   To put it into perspective, a MAC quad is the equivalent of paying $200/oz., and the Kaleidoscope is $194/oz.  Note:  my packaging is sample packaging, while retail versions are packaged in the brand’s signature black; the packaging rating reflects the retail packaging.

	Nouvelle Vague A
	It's a fantastic palette, and while it's worth it from both a quality and value stand point, it is quite the investment! Rich in color, soft, blendable textures, and great wear make this palette hard to resist.

Le Metier de Beaute Goldstone True Colour Eyeshadow ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is burnt goldenrod–a sort of rusty medium brown with orange undertones and a yellow gold shimmer-sheen. Dior Aurora has a shade that’s very similar with less of a sheen and a slightly more orange base. Chanel Tigerlily is more orange, less shimmer/sheen. MAC Juiced has a similar color, but it has less warmth. MAC Goldmine is lighter, more gold-like. Inglot #404 is more bronze.

The color payoff was excellent; really rich in color that required no layering or building to achieve true-to-pan color. It has a sublime texture that’s soft, silky-smooth and melts against the skin. It’s almost buttery, but it doesn’t have a really dense quality to it, yet the way it looks and feels is more in line with a nearly-creamy, buttery texture. The powder is finely-milled and blends effortlessly on the lid.  Goldstone wears impeccably on the eye, too, with or without a primer–I was able to get a full eight hours of wear without creasing or fading both over and without a primer.

Each True Colour Eyeshadow comes in a circular, rubberized compact with a mirror inside, and they’re almost triple the size of the average eyeshadow–0.13 oz. compared to 0.05 oz. It might ring up at a higher-than-palatable price tag, but you get every bit of your money’s worth here, both in terms of quality as well as quantity.

Le Metier de Beaute Midnight Sky Eyeshadow ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is an incredibly deep, dark navy blue with soft frost finish. It almost seems like navy blue sheen over a blackened-blue base, because the level of darkness is so high, but it doesn’t read blackened blue at all.  It looks a bit like MAC Blue Sheen used dry–but Midnight Sky is so much darker and opaque. Make Up For Ever #81 seems the closest but leans a touch purple.

The formula is buttery and almost creamy (but it is a powder) because of its denser texture. It applies smoothly and the color distributes evenly across the skin. I found it worked well both dry and wet with no real distinguishable difference between the two methods.

P.S. — I swear, I didn’t already review this, but I did review Lapis, which is a medium blue–but the two really are several shades away from each other!

Le Metier de Beaute Lapis Eyeshadow ($30.00 for 0.13 oz.) is is a medium-dark blue with a frosted finish. I love it as an eyeliner, because it has enough vibrancy to add some oomph, but it’s not too bright, so it doesn’t come off harsh.  Urban Decay Goddess is darker, while MAC Deep Truth is darker with a blacker base. Inglot #428 is similar but a touch darker, as is Make Up For Ever #308.

It has a soft texture that applies pretty smoothly across the skin. It’s dense and the color payoff is nice, though it does sheer out a little easily. It’s good, but it’s not the best Le Metier de Beaute shade I’ve tried (in terms of texture).  It does apply nearly the same whether you use it dry or damp, which is convenient, because you can forego the extra step of dampening your brush and still achieve the same intensity and color.

	If you find that a lot of darker blues are too intense or dark, you might like this one more--it is still a dark blue, but it's not in-your-face and it doesn't have a really deep base color.
