Makeup How-to

Eyes: Smothered Cream Shadow (Fall 2011) blended with Marine Ultra Chromagraphic Pencil over eye lids and through lower lash line. Thru the Night Pro Longwear Eyeshadow and Carbon eyeshadow blended for a smoky intensity through the inner and outer eyelid and crease. Old Gold pigment as a highlight over center of eyelids andi nner corners. Gold glitter on the center of eyelids.
Lips: Shell cream colour base applied over lips with Lip Conditioner SPF 15 and concealer to tone down natural lip color.
Face: Studio Sculpt Foundation set with Sweep to contour.

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created a sleek and elegant gilded twist using Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener, Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine, and Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Jason Wu Fall/Winter 2011 show.

Hair How-to

Apply Aveda Smooth Infusion Glossing Straightener to damp hair, from roots to ends, to smooth hair and add shine. Create a center part using a fine-tooth comb and blow hair dry straight. Use a flat-iron for super sleek length.
Create a ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic. Spray Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray generously to keep hair in place.
Coat the hair from roots to ends with Aveda Brilliant Retexturing Gel for a lustrous, polished look.
Divide the ponytail in half and wind the two sections together to create a twist. Secure the twist with an elastic two to three inches above the ends and mist with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray for hold.
Pull the ends of the hair up to the back of the head so the twist loops at the neck. Use bobby pins to secure the bottom of the twist to the base—so the ends of the hair fan upwards. Add a layer of Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.
Use a fine-tooth comb to coax the ends of the hair into a feather shape and set against the head using Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray. Very gently apply gold leaf to only to the shaped ends with fingers and spray liberally with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray.
Complete the look with a generous layer of Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine for a high gloss finish.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
“Jason’s Baroque-meets-American-sportswear collection this season includes muted black, whites, and nudes highlighted by shots of antique gold, so we wanted to create something simple and elegant—with a touch of luxury.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“To adapt this style for real life, create a sleek pony with Aveda Brilliant Spray-On Shine and twist into a bun at the nape of the neck, with ends fanning up the back of the head. Clip with a bright metallic barrette or hair pin to add a shot of glamour. Spray with Aveda Control Force Firm Hold Hair Spray for a controlled and elegant finish.” — Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“My collection was inspired by Robert Polidori’s gorgeous photographs of the restoration of Versailles. I loved the juxtaposition between Versailles’ rough undersurface revealed during renovation and its opulent Baroque décor, so my clothing this season is a mix of luxuriously embellished fabrics and signature American sportswear. There are over fifteen types of laces, including a delicately falling leaf motif lace that I embroidered onto day and evening pieces and a gilded lace gown with black and white ‘gear’ palettes.” — Jason Wu

Chiffon Highlights at Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011 Show with Odile Gilbert for Aveda

On Hair:

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created looping braids and twists finished with a chiffon ‘flower’ using Aveda Smooth Infusion Style-Prep™ Smoother,™ Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray, and Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Jason Wu Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week show in New York.

INSPIRATION: “The Jason Wu hair look for this season is simple yet sophisticated, with 1970’s inspiration. We’re braiding chiffon—scraps from the collection—into the hair and twisting the ends into a flower. This look captures the happiness and excitement of spring and summer.” –Odile Gilbert for Aveda–Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Hair How-to:

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ for smoothness and to tame flyaways. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a strong, clean part on the right side of the head and then blow dry straight using a Mason Pearson brush.

2. Pull hair tightly back and separate into four sections along the nape of the neck. Spray each with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and flexible hold.

3. Tie a long ribbon or piece of fabric—in a shade close to the hair color—around the top of each section of hair.

4. One section at a time, braid the fabric through the hair and secure at the bottom with an elastic. Leave excess fabric out at the bottom of each braid. Spray each braid liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.

5. Collect all four braids and tie the fabric into one large bow at the end to create a ‘flower.’

6. Pull the fabric ‘flower’ upwards and secure at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating beautiful braided loops stemming from the flower. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

ODIE GILBERT: Jason’s collection was inspired in part by the 1970’s, so we wanted the hair for this season to reflect the hair of that era. Though the look is ultra-sophisticated, it’s also young and playful, with clean, slick hair in front and a mélange of braids and twists gathered into a gorgeous flower in back. The addition of Jason’s material completes the look, like chiffon highlights.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

ODIE GILBERT: This look is very simple to recreate and works on anyone. Prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ and blow dry straight. Separate four sections of hair in the back and twist a piece of fabric into each. Leave a little fabric out at the ends and tie them together into a bow. Twist the braids up and pin to the back of the head. Set the style with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.

Hair How-to

Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener for added shine and straightness, and blow-dry smooth with a flat brush.
Use a comb to create a clean part—either in the center or wherever hair parts naturally. Then pull hair into a loose ponytail at the nape of the neck, allowing hair on either side of the ponytail to cover the ears and rest at chin length. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for all-day strong hold.
Wrap a 10-inch bungee elastic around the ponytail, criss-crossing it from top to bottom to create a braid-like pattern. Tie securely at the bottom and set with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.
Wrap the braided ponytail into a flat chignon at the back of the head and secure with hair pins.
Allow a few loose pieces of hair to fall naturally around the face. The sides should be loose and romantic while the chignon is more tightly secured in place. Finish the look with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for lightweight hold.

“Jason and I were inspired by Holly Hunter in the beach scene in the film “The Piano,” so we wanted the hair look for this season to reflect that sentiment. Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
“This look is easily translatable for day or night, but can be especially romantic for evening. Prep hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Glossing Straightener and blow dry straight. Create a low ponytail, with hair loosely covering the ears. Wrap the ponytail with a bungee elastic or make a simple braid, and pin it up into a flat chignon.”—Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
“This season, I was inspired by Irving Penn’s photographs—especially the platinum prints. I wanted to reflect Penn’s own personal style in my collection, as well as his body of work.” – Jason Wu

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
“In addition to my collection having a somewhat earthy inspiration and theme, keeping the entire enterprise eco-friendly is of the utmost importance to me. By using “green” products backstage and keeping waste to a minimum, the fashion community can do their part to lessen their environmental impact.” – Jason Wu
