By Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries

Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Kimberly started her working life early at the tender age of 15. For most of the past 10 years, she has worked for some of the biggest media corporations her sunny country has had to offer. She always wanted to become a writer, but with no training and never having finished high school, it didn’t look like it was going to happen, but then she created The Plastic Diaries and The Styleless Diaries. She also co-founded the first niche-specific blogging event in Australia, the Australian Beauty Bloggers Weekend.

Interview With An Online Retail Giant

Did you know that the size of Australia is slightly larger than the contiguous states of the USA? We might be bigger in land size but Australia has a mere 10% of the population of the USA, and when it comes to buying beauty products, every Australian will tell you that the Americans are very lucky.

Online shopping is a worldwide phenomenon, but it has only picked up in Australia over the last couple of years. Online shopping is especially important for many Australians as most of what you would consider to be “easy to find” products are unavailable to those outside of the main capital cities.

One lady who refused to let location or availability get in the way of the Australian woman’s quest for beauty is Kate Morris, founder of Adore Beauty. At the ripe age of 21 years old, Kate saw the need for an independent online retailer. Now 11 years on, Kate is one of Australia’s leading women in business and her store is the go-to place for any beauty shopper. Today, we speak to her about the changing landscape of Australian beauty buying.

Q. Your store, AdoreBeauty.com.au, stocks a variety of Australian and international beauty brands. What do you see as the main points of difference between our local brands and those of other countries?

That’s a tricky one – we stock quite a few Australian brands (e.g. Aesop, Jurlique, Bloom, KEVIN.MURPHY, Lanolips, Alpha-H, ASAP, ModelCo, Napoleon Perdis, Inika, evo, Unico, O&M, Subtle Energies and BECCA) and they are all so different from each other!

I think that Australian brands tend to have a sort of no-nonsense, straight-shooting directness in common. They say what they do, and they do what they say.

Aussie brands also tend to embrace natural and organic ingredients. You will also find lots of products with high SPF in Aussie brands, our sun is very harsh here so we need to protect ourselves.

Q. In terms of overall sales, what of percentage of your customers are buying Australian brands?

Australian brands are very strong sellers for us – nine out of our top 20 brands for 2011 are Australian. Obviously the most popular Australian brands with our international customers are those that aren’t available (or are very hard to find) outside of Australia.

Q. What foreign brands would you like to be seen made available in Australia?

There are a few that we used to have here that have sadly disappeared, and I’d love to see them make a comeback: Urban Decay, Caudalie, Nuxe. I love Fresh, not sure why that hasn’t made it over here yet. Also LORAC is a great brand, I have a blush of theirs that is fabulous.

Q. You have hundreds of brands at your finger tips. What are your 5 favourite brands, Australian or foreign, and why?

You know this is like making me choose my favourite child, right? Here goes:

  • Aesop – is unbelievably cool. Every bathroom should have their hand wash in it.
  • BECCA – such great products, such chic packaging. The mascara is my Holy Grail, and my handbag always has Vendela lipstick and at least two Beach Tints in it.
  • SK-II – is responsible for Cate Blanchett’s luminous skin. Say no more. I particularly love the masks.
  • Clarisonic – I am a skincare junkie and have at least 6 cleansers on rotation, but one thing I do always stick to is using the Clarisonic every morning in the shower. Makes a huge difference.
  • KEVIN.MURPHY – Kevin always has his finger right on the pulse of the latest hair trends and this brand is so innovative. The POWDER.PUFF volumising powder is brilliant, and we can’t keep the new COLOR.BUGS on the shelf, they sell out so fast!

If you want to stock up on some of those great Australian brands, head to AdoreBeauty.com.au. They ship globally!

The Best of Face of Australia

Australian beauty brands are different to the rest of the world. While striving to make the perfect product is a universal goal, I feel the Australian approach to beauty is simplistic. In general, we like easy to use, understated, realistic beauty. We live an outdoor, active lifestyle and we want to look good without interfering with it. One brand that I believe encapsulates the Australian beauty culture is Face Of Australia.

Face Of Australia is an Australian owned and made brand of color cosmetics. Their philosophy is to make products specifically designed for Australian consumers, who want a high quality, innovative range of cosmetics at an affordable price.  Being an Australian beauty lover can be difficult due to our lack of access to international brands and their high price points. Like most women, I wanted to stay on top of color trends and try products containing the latest ingredients and developments. Face Of Australia is one brand that consistently brings on new products that are often better than the luxury alternatives.

Discovering their products changed my life not only in bringing me the products I wanted, but also restoring my faith in the Australian color cosmetic market. Because of them I started to try more Australian brands, and I have never looked back. Plus, they are 100% against animal testing and that means a lot to me.

The Products

I couldn’t leave without telling you my top 3 products by Face Of Australia. I have already mentioned a couple of these previously but they are that good they deserve another mention.

  1. Liquid Eyeliner (AUS $8.95 rrp) is my holy grail liquid eyeliner.  The brush head is super fine and the long handle makes controlling the application extremely easy. Once dry, it doesn’t budge.  It’s available in four shades:  Black, Brown, Charcoal, and Navy.
  2. Face Base Primer (AUS $11.95 rrp) is my favorite primer to date.  The oil-free formula is hydrating and leaves my skin feeling soft and supple. It does all the things a great primer should do, but why I like this one is that it is fragrance-free and doesn’t clog my pores.
  3. Lip Quench Moisturizing Lipstick SPF30+ (AUS $9.45 rrp) is beautiful range of lipsticks that has one key factor that makes it a standout to me:   SPF30+. The lipsticks are nourishing, the colors are gorgeous, and they don’t have that icky ‘lipstick smell’ but all of that is just icing on the cake to the fact they provide broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.  Available in 13 shades: Malibu Barbie, Forbidden Fruit, Pink Champagne, Nude Satin, Lychee Crush, Iced Almond, Ruby Delight, Power Surge, Pink Ambition, Pure Plum, Silver Rose, Sweet Nectar, Cocoa Cherry.

5 Australian Beauty Product Must-Haves

In my first Temptalia questionnaire I touched on some of my favourite Australian beauty brands and products. Limiting myself to just five favorites with only a couple of words to explain why was torturous. I am a beauty loving blogger, I need to rant and rave! Today, we are exploring that topic a little deeper (phew!), and I am excited to share with you my current 5 must-have Australian products. These are the products I believe each person should receive as they disembark the plane when visiting Australia. They make us proud.

Blush Patrol by Napoleon Perdis

I only recently discovered the amazing-ness of baked powder (aka Mineralize) products, and very few Australian cosmetic companies had ventured into that booming corner of the market until recently. My first experience with a baked powder was with this blush by Napoleon Perdis. The recently revamped Blush Patrol was already a smash hit for the brand. The mix of frosty bronze-pink and milky pink-crème colours makes it wearable for most skin tones. It is a shimmer overload but of the highest grade, and there is zero fall-out which should be expected of a baked product. This is my go-to, don’t need to think about it, goes-with-everything blush.  Available from Napoleon Perdis, $50

Eyeshadow Primer by Australis Cosmetics

Like most girls in the world, I love Urban Decay’s Primer Potion for keeping eye shadow on my lids. Unfortunately, it isn’t the most budget-friendly product and unless you are in the USA, it is just about impossible to get. Luckily, we have our very own dupe UDPP dupe from Australis Cosmetics. The primer comes in a pink ‘lipgloss-style’ tube with a doe foot applicator. The formula is quite creamy but not as creamy as UDPP. It appears to be a sheer cream color at first but blends out on the lid to virtually clear. I have oily lids that crease easily, and this lid primer turns any eyeshadow into vibrant, long-lasting color without a hitch.  Available from Australis Cosmetics, AU $12.95

Face Base Primer by Face Of Australia

We all know the importance of face primers but finding the right one is essential. I love Face Base because it sinks into the skin rather than sitting on the surface. It leaves the skin feeling smooth and hydrated, instead of silky and oily like most silicone-based primers can.  It is a no-fuss, affordable product that I cannot recommend enough.  Available from Fashion Addict, $11.95

Tinted Daywear SPF30 + by Invisible Zinc

If there is one thing I believe in more than anything, it is that sunscreen is the most vital part of any anti-aging regimen. In Australia, that belief couldn’t apply more. In our sunny country, UVA is just as damaging as UVB so it is important to be protected from both at all times. Invisible Zinc is a brand that prides itself on doing just that.

My current pick of their products is the Tinted Daywear, which has all the goodness of their moisturizing sunscreen plus the additional goodness of a tint. I find this particularly important because usually sunscreen as strong as this one usually leaves me looking a little extra white, so having the tint means I am protected without looking like a ghost.  It comes in two shades, Light and Medium.  Available from New London Pharmacy, $42

Lanolips Lip Ointment With Colour SPF15 in Mulberry

Every girl needs a good lip balm, and the love of my life at the moment is a new release from Lanolips just for Christmas. Black mulberries happen to be my favourite fruit. Lanolips must have known this when they decided to juice them for a limited edition ointment. Lip Ointment With Colour has been a staple for many Lanolips fans, but this new release smells amazing and leaves your lips tinted a luscious, dark berry hue. The colour is so spot on that it actually reminds me of how dyed my lips looked after eating a bucket full of freshly picked mulberries. It also contains the protection of SPF15 which is an essential to keep lips looking young.  Available from Adore Beauty, AU $13.95
