Guerlain Terra Inca Collection: Ombre Fusions

Guerlain Ombre Fusion Cream Eyeshadows ($35.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) are new for summer and come in three varieties. Guerlain claims they are heat and water-resistant that “will last from dawn to dusk.” Each shadow is housed in a square glass tube with a metal cap–the packaging is very reminiscent of lipgloss, even down to the doe-footed applicator.  The packaging is a good mix of functionality and aesthetic appeal, but the glass makes these less portable.

• Bahia is a soft pinked peach with very fine gold micro-shimmer. This is definitely wear-and-go kind of shade; perfect as a brightening wash of color on the lid.
• Havana is a chocolatey khaki brown with olive green and gold micro-shimmer. Of the three, this is the most unique, as the color shifts from chocolate bronze to olive to khaki.
• Maya is a medium-dark bronzy brown with red undertone and gold and copper micro-shimmer.

Depending on how much product you apply, you can get a sheerer layer of color or something richer and more opaque. Guerlain mentions an “illuminated effect” and “shimmering reflections.” I swatched both heavily and very lightly to show how sheer it could be blended out, if desired. It’s really all in the application of the user–a little goes a long way. Bahia was the one shade that I found took real layering to achieve a more opaque look, so I would describe Bahia as semi-sheer to semi-opaque, while the others are semi-opaque to opaque–all depending on how much product you choose to apply. They’ll go on more opaque generally, just because so little is required for a sheer effect that you have to be deliberate about how little you use.

The texture of these is a very thin cream; I would consider them more liquid than cream, because they have the feel and spread of a thicker liquid. It enables these to blend effortlessly onto the lid, whether you use a brush or fingertip, but they act far more like a cream eyeshadow from there on. These dry down at just the right pace; not so quick that you rush to get it in place or so slow that it builds into creases. Once it set, it stayed on for twelve hours with no creasing, fading, or smudging. I took a hot shower while wearing Havana on the lid to no noticeable decrease in wear–it didn’t crease, and it didn’t disappear. I just patted my face dry with a towel, and it looked the same pre- and post-shower.

	Bahia is the easiest to wear, while Havana seemed to be the most unique. It reminded me of a richer Nordstrom. These lived up to all of the lofty claims made--all-day wear and resists both heat and water.

Guerlain Terracotta Mosaic Compact

Guerlain Terracotta Mosaic Compact ($69.00 for 0.98 oz.) is a mega-sized face and body bronzer with Guerlain’s signature Gs intertwined in a mosaic pattern. This is certainly more of a collector’s item, particularly in light of the price tag, though you get nearly an ounce of bronzer.

It is a mix of champagne gold, warm, terracotta brown, and dirty bronze. The champagne gold is an overspray, which does go away after a few uses. I scratched at the surface, and it does seem like the lighter brown and darker brown shades go all the way through and both have a very slight shimmer-sheen laced through the product. When applied, it gives a warm, golden bronze glow with a satiny sheen (the swatches are shown after the champagne gold overspray was removed). It should work well with light to medium-dark skin tones, and best with warmer complexions.

The color is different from the Terra Inca Sublime Radiant Powder, which is a rosier bronze, less orange, and it has a much more metallic and high-shine finish. The Sublime Radiant powder felt more like a highlighter, while the Terracotta Mosaic powder feels more like a traditional bronzer.

I found the scent of this bronzer to be overwhelming–it is a very strong, heavy scent, and to me it’s like a floral baby powder. I just can’t do it. From the minute I opened the compact, it took over. It’s nowhere near as strong when worn, but I did catch a few whiffs of it through the day. It’s unfortunate, because the bronzer wears well (eight hours) and gives me a nice golden glow and sheen.

For me, I thought this looked prettier in the online photos I saw than in person; I had to hold it a few feet away to see the design pop as much as it seemed to online–so I am curious to hear what others think on the design. I think the Sublime Radiant powder is a better use of your money (it’s $70, though half the size), because it’s a more unique color and product, plus it’s packaged in such a lovely way–this compact is lightweight plastic.

	The scent was a deal breaker for me--I wouldn't repurchase it for myself. It's a good bronzer with a really soft texture that lays beautifully on the skin, but the price tag will keep many away.

Guerlain Summer 2011:  Terre Indigo Eyeshadow Palette

Guerlain Terre Indigo Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.32 oz.) contains “a vibrant orange, intense blue, deep brown, and lighter brown” that are “speckled with a pale golden tone.” Guerlain says that they can be used together or separately. The palette includes two sponge-tip applicators and mirror on the inside. It’s housed in a blackened bronze that shimmers in the light a bit.

I remember some readers were concerned about the feasiblity of using an eyeshadow palette like this, but in reality, the gold is really just an overspray–it disappears within the first use or two–so there are four distinct sections, each large enough to accomodate your average eyeshadow brush.

The palette includes a brightened, medium-dark orange with soft gold flecks of shimmer; dark, cool-toned brown with a pearled sheen; medium-dark, warmed-over brown with a soft gold micro-shimmer and satin finish; and a brightened medium-dark cobalt blue with a satiny sheen. Color pay off was good across the board, though the blue shade could use a little more oomph. The texture of these was soft without being powdery, so they applied smoothly and didn’t have any issues with fall out.

As a luxury brand, Guerlain’s price point isn’t for everyone, but at the least the palette contains 0.32 oz. worth of product, which is $184/oz. compared to brands like Chanel ($233/oz. for a quad), Dior ($276/oz. for a quint), MAC ($180/oz. for a pre-made quad), and NARS ($265/oz. for a trio). It’s always nice to see a boost in quantity with higher priced products, even if the total price may be a deciding factor. Despite its embellishments and designs, this eyeshadow palette retails for the same their normal quads do.

Guerlain Terra Inca Sublime Radiant Powder ($70.00 for 0.51 oz.) is a “highlighting bronzer for the face and body.” It combines a “highlighting beige and a pink bronze” to “enhance the complexion while warming the skin with an iridiescent glow.”

It’s an oversized bronzer housed in a wooden compact that slides open (held together by three magnets). It has all of the hallmarks of luxury with engraved detailing on the outer cover with the Guerlain initials and logo, along with the intricate design of the bronzer itself. The center of the bronzer is a muted gold, while the outer portion is a rose-tinted bronzy brown. Together, they create a soft tan bronze with a golden metallic sheen. It’s more of a sheen than shimmer, but it’s not a very subtle sheen–I mention this because many of Guerlain’s products have a softer shimmer and sheen, but this powder has more sheen than Meteorites or the like. The powder has a soft, smooth, very refined texture that feels like silk moving across the skin.

Worn, it imparts a glowy sheen (I wore it on the tops of cheeks and softly brushed around the temples) that’s a soft, golden bronze. It worked well paired with a blush, too, though it could be worn alone for something very bronzy. It also has fantastic wear; it stayed glowy and smooth for eight hours before starting to fade away. The compact itself is done very well, though it’s not the most secure packaging and wouldn’t be my favorite item to travel with. For $70, at least they give you half an ounce of bronzer, though–not many will get through that!

	It's a nice highlighter-bronzer mix for those wanting a very glowy, golden beachy bronze coloring. If you prefer a more natural bronzer, you might consider the regular Terracotta line, which has more matte finishes.
