A Spring Rendez-vous with Guerlain

Guerlain Rendez-vous (762) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a cool-toned, medium pink with blue undertones and a soft, pearly pink shimmer-sheen. MAC Love Long Distance is cooler-toned. Guerlain Rose Piquant is less cool-toned, milkier. Revlon Strawberry Shortcake is much cooler-toned, almost lavender in comparison. Chanel Charme is a touch lighter. MAC Cheers All Around is a bit warmer.

I thought this color was going to be easily duped, but I couldn’t find many that had the same level of coolness to it; potential similar shades were either much cooler-toned with a stronger blue base, or else they were more fuchsia/brighter.  Rendez-vous has mostly opaque color coverage, but there is a very light translucency and a shimmer-sheen finish that reflects light and gives off shine but doesn’t look too frosted.  It lasted for four hours on my lips, wore away evenly, and was lightly hydrating while I wore it. The formula is supposed to be long-lasting, so four hours is a bit short (I average four hours with regular lipstick formulas; six hours with long-wearing ones).  It had a lightly creamy, glide-on texture that helped during application.  There’s no discernible taste, but it is violet-scented as many Guerlain products are.

A Bold Shade for Spring

Guerlain Flirt (761) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a fuchsia-berry with iridescent fuchsia shimmer. Clinique Grandest Grape is redder and doesn’t have shimmer. MAC Rebel is nearly identical in color but doesn’t have the fuchsia shimmer. Guerlain Guet-Apens is redder, less berry. Guerlain Nuit d’Amour is a bit darker, redder, less shimmery.

The Shine Automatique formula is supposed to be long-wearing, hydrating, and contain “pearl particles to give lips discreet yet exceptional shine.” Flirt is mostly opaque on lips, and it has a thin, balm-like consistency that glides easily across lips and never pulls or drags.  The thinner texture, though, means the sparkle is very slightly noticeable after a few hours of wear.  It deposits even color that lasted for six and a half hours on me. I didn’t have any issues with the dark berry color feathering or bleeding along the edges of my lips.  The formula is comfortable to wear, long-wearing, and moisturizing both during and after wear.  It is violet-scented but has no discernible taste, and it comes in a slide-up tube.

A Lipstick Meant for Layering

Guerlain Altoum (700) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “gold with tone-on-tone sparkle” and is supposed to be used to illuminate lips with a veil of sparkle or used as a layering base/top coat with another lip product. The base is mostly clear, perhaps just enough to give it a warm tone, but it is predominantly composed of lots and lots of gold sparkle and shimmer ranging from medium to micro in size. MAC Ruffian Gold is similar, slightly less yellow-y. Dior Or Etoile paler and more uniform in the size of the shimmer (which is fairly fine). I was also reminded of Bobbi Brown Canary, which is a gloss.

I love that Guerlain made sure to describe this exactly as it is:  a sheer veil of shimmer that’s designed more as a layering shade than a standalone shade in the Shine Automatique line–a range that is typically semi-opaque to opaque in color.  It has a healthy dose of sparkle, and I like using it as a base shade rather than a top coat, only because it tends to be easier to apply that way. I’ll apply Altoum first, and then I’ll apply a more opaque lipstick on top.  If you use a lip brush, then I like using Altoum second, since you can pat it on.

As sheer shades often wear off quickly, I wasn’t all that surprised to find that this shade didn’t last as long as other Shine Automatique shades: four hours overall, but there were a few pieces of shimmer that lingered for longer.  It was slightly hydrating but not as moisturizing as other shades.  I could also feel the texture of the sparkle from the get-go.

A Holiday Pink That Sparkles

Guerlain Lou-Ling (760) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as an “enchanting plum set off with a golden sparkle.” It’s a pop of raspberry pink with a subtle shimmer-sheen finish. There is noticeable fuchsia and gold sparkle within the color. Tarina Tarantino Floriculture is similar, slightly pinker. Revlon Raspberry Pie is less red, pinker, cooler-toned. Guerlain Girly is redder. MAC Quite the Thing is cooler-toned and more fuchsia. MAC Scandelicious is similar but doesn’t have the sparkle.

It looked rather sheer when swatched, but applied to lips, the color opacity is nearly opaque–it was a little surprising, actually!  Shine Automatique is a long-wearing and hydrating with “bold” coverage.  Lou-Ling wore for six hours and left behind a light stain, and while there’s noticeable sparkle, it didn’t travel during the time I wore it but there was an ever-so-noticeable grit after three hours of wear.  It was comfortable to wear and apply–creamy and slick enough to glide on without pulling or tugging but no feathering or bleeding–and my lips felt hydrated during and post-wear.  It is scented with Guerlain’s signature violet fragrance.

	If you aren't ready for a holiday red, or you want something different, Lou-Ling is a holiday pink with just enough brightness to pop but not read neon.

Guerlain Pamplelune (240) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “vibrant coral.” It’s a semi-opaque coral-pink with warm undertones and a dusting of fine gold shimmer. Laura Mercier Kissed Lips is slightly pinker. NYX Haute Melon is similar; a smidgen lighter, no shimmer. Guerlain Quand Vient l’Ete is very similar, bu8t more opaque and less pink. Chanel Coquette is lighter and has pink shimmer. NARS Niagara is very similar but doesn’t have as much shimmer. MAC Crosswires is a bit more orange.

The formula is touted as a “moisturizing and long-lasting lipstick [that] combines bold color with pearly particles.”  This shade has semi-opaque color coverage; it gives lips noticeable color, but some of the natural lip color still comes through (you’ll notice you can see my lip freckle, but it’s muted).  The formula is comfortable to wear, lightweight, and incredibly shimmery, sparkling, and all-around stunning when worn. Depending on your sensitivities, I can feel the micro-sparkle when I press my lips together, which I don’t love.

While it’s moisturizing and always leaves my lips feeling better than they began, it’s not a long-wearing product for me. Pamplelune lasts about four hours, which is average for most lipsticks.  The Rouge Automatique is definitely truer to the long-wearing claim.  Shine Automatique has a more balm-like texture, so it has more slip and slide, which means it feels great when applied and after, but it doesn’t last as long.  It has a perfume-y scent, similar to the Rouge Automatiques, and it is packaged in the same type of packaging.

Guerlain Sous Le Vent (200) Shine Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “warm caramel.” It’s a medium rosy brown with a beige shimmer-sheen. It looks rosier on the lips due to the natural pink tones of my lip color, while the beige shimmer translates into more of a general white frost/shimmer. Cle de Peau T9 is creamier, peachier. Dior Coral Crystal is a bit darker. MAC Can’t Get Enough is more bronze. NARS Love Devotion is sheerer and more coral. Chanel Ruban Rose is similar but more frosted.

The Shine Automatique Lipstick is incredibly moisturizing, and it has a very sparkling, dazzling finish from the micro-sparkle.  It looks luminous, wet-like, and a little glossy without feeling heavy.  The texture is rather balm-like, so it glides and slides onto the lip like butter, which feels amazing, but it does contribute to below-average wear.  The formula is supposed to be long-wearing, but I only get three and a half hours with Sous Le Vent, and I typically get four hours with the average lipstick [that isn't long-wearing].   It has a perfume-y scent, similar to the Rouge Automatiques, and it is packaged in the same type of packaging.

The color coverage of this shade is mostly opaque–you can barely see my lip freckle–but there is the expected underlying translucency that gives it that luminous finish.  One thing I don’t like is the way I can feel the shimmer/glitter when I press my lips together, but I will note that Sous Le Vent was the smoothest I’ve tried so far.

	Now, there are a lot of things to love about this lipstick, and as an avid fan of Guerlain's lip products, I do, generally, like the formula, but I can always feel the sparkle whenever I press my lips together so it doesn't seem quite as refined.
