Guerlain Romance (601) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a softened, light-medium pink with very subtle, warm undertones and a soft, frosted finish comprised of pink and white shimmer. MAC Haute Altitude is similar on, but it has a creamy consistency without shimmer. MAC Peach Blossom is sheerer and darker. Chanel Flirt is pinker. Guerlain Rose Desir is darker.

This shade was mostly opaque on the lips with a touch of lingering translucency–there are just hints of my natural lip color coming through and altering the color slightly. I’d expect if you had more natural pigmentation in your lip color, you’d see it get darker/redder.  Romance lasted for five hours, and it was hydrating, lightweight, and comfortable to wear.  The consistency of the formula is slick, creamy, but not thick, and goes on evenly. The lipstick range is violet-scented but has no discernible taste, and it is packaged in a tube that opens with a slider.

A Warm, Rosy Shade for Spring

Guerlain Ballade (600) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm-toned, rosy coral with a frosted finish. Applied, it seems to take on a rosier appearance (less coral) due to the natural pink tones in my lip color. Chanel Orchidee is redder. Revlon Pink Truffle is comparable in color but has a glossier, less frosted finish. Thierry Mugler Feeling is brighter. NARS Mayflower has less frost and is a touch redder. Rimmel Latino is less warm-toned.

Guerlain’s Rouge Automatique formula is supposed to be comfortable to wear, long-wearing, and a “burst” of color. Most of the Rouge Automatiques deliver a fair amount of color with translucency, so the natural lip color peeks through; this has the effect of a more natural lip color, because it doesn’t look like something else layered on your lips as a more opaque cream finish might. Ballade is semi-opaque with that subtle translucency. It has a creamy, glide-on consistency that doesn’t feel too thick or too thin, and it wears for five hours and is hydrating while worn. The lipstick range is violet-scented but has no discernible taste, and it is packaged in a tube that opens with a slider.

Guerlain Quand Vient l’Ete (141) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a coral-orange with soft tangerine shimmer. Benefit Saucy is similar but with more shimmer. Dior Versailles is pinker. Cle de Peau Leonardis is a touch lighter but very similar. MAC Crosswires is close, though it doesn’t have the shimmer. MAC Viva Glam Cyndi is darker, more vibrant.

The shade yields mostly opaque color coverage, but the color does bunch up somewhat in random places, so the coverage isn’t perfectly even.  It’s not as noticeable as Guet-Apens, though.  Quand Vient l’Ete had a soft, creamy consistency that glided across lips with ease and no tugging or pulling whatsoever.  There’s a healthy dosage of shimmer, enough to be noticeable but not enough to give it a frosted finish, plus a natural sheen.  When I tested out this shade for wear, it hung on for four hours, which is about average.  For more packaging photos, please see this post.

	It's a lovely shade of coral for the summer that should flatter warmer skin tones in particular. It has a fair amount of orange in it, so it may not be the ideal coral for cooler complexions.

Guerlain Guet-Apens (167) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a reddened berry with soft raspberry red shimmer. The color coverage is semi-opaque, but it doesn’t give the most even coverage. Guerlain L’Heure Bleue is redder. Dior Nocturne is redder and has gold shimmer. Dior Technicolor Red is redder and brighter. Guerlain Nuit d’Amour is a bit darker. MAC Rebel is a bit redder and more opaque.

I wish the color applied more evenly!  Guet-Apens has the right color coverage–not totally opaque, a little translucent–for the formula, but it doesn’t want to cover evenly, which is a major bummer.  It still felt lovely going on; creamy enough to glide over lips without being slippery.  Once on, it felt lightweight and wore for four and a half hours and left behind a very subtle stain.  For more packaging photos, please see this post.

	I'm usually very impressed with the Rouge Automatique line, and this is really the first shade I can remember having real trouble with. The feel and consistency is true to form, but the application is more troublesome if you want even color coverage.

Guerlain Rose Bengale (163) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is reddened berry with rosy pink shimmer. It’s several shades darker than Bloom in Rose and the shimmer is less apparent. MAC Craving is a little pinker. Bobbi Brown Plum Rose is similar but has no shimmer. Maybelline Bit of Berry is a little less red. MAC Deliciously Forbidden is more berry-hued. Chanel Destinee has less red in it.

Rose Bengale has nearly opaque color coverage and a semi-frosted finish.  Even with the frost level in this particular shade, the formula is true to form for a Rouge Automatique.  It’s lightweight, comfortable to wear, glides on easily, and wears well.  With this shade, I was able to get five and a half hours of wear.   The consistency is creamy enough to enable an easy glide across the lips, but it’s not so full of slip that it slides around the lips.  For more packaging photos, please see this post.

Guerlain Bloom of Rose (162) Rouge Automatique Lipstick ($35.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a frosted medium-dark pink-plum. Chanel Paradis is a lighter, sheerer version. MAC Troublemaker has a similar color but different finish and is sheer. Chanel Legende is redder. MAC Craving is similar but darker, creamier. Bobbi Brown Plum Rose is darker. Maybelline Bit of Berry is darker and has a creamy finish.

What makes Bloom of Rose special is actually how much more complex it is than it appears to be.  At first glance, it’s just another pink, but then when you go to describe it, you think of roses, plums, pinks, and they all play together here.  The lighter pink shimmer gives it a frosted finish but also serves to lighten the backdrop of pink-plum it sits on.  The color coverage is mostly opaque, and while it still has a subtle sheen common to the formula, it’s not as glossy or as creamy as the majority of the Rouge Automatique range.  I imagine that the frost content gives it that slightly drier consistency.  I wouldn’t describe it as dry, just drier than other Rouge Automatiques.   It still feels lightweight and comfortable to wear, just everything is to a slightly lesser degree.  It wears five and a half hours on me, though, which is longer than anticipated for a shade of this hue.
