Another Summer Hue Just in Time for Fall

Guerlain Gracy Rouge G Lipstick ($48.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm coral-pink with a little hint of red. It has almost imperceptible pearl; there’s a minor reflection and sheen but no obvious shimmer particles. MAC Watch me Simmer is much lighter. MAC Force of Love is pinker and lighter. Wet ‘n’ Wild Hot Paris Pink is a smidgen lighter but close. Make Up For Ever #38 is less pink but a little brighter. OCC Trollop is lighter and pinker. MAC Fusion Pink is redder and has a pink iridescent sheen. Chanel Phoenix is a bit lighter and has noticeable pink shimmer.

Bright and bold with full color coverage and a natural finish, Gracy is more summer than fall, even if it is part of the fall release.  The color glides on and hugs lips without feeling clingy, while the formula itself wears for six and a half hours and keeps lips well-hydrated the entire time.  I did not experience any feathering or bleeding lip color.

Like the rest of the range, there is a perfume-like scent attached to these but no discernible scent. Each is packaged in a hefty silver metal case that has a flip mirror. I appreciate the sleek design of the case, and it feels very luxe to hold, but from a practical purpose, they’re kind of heavy to keep your bag, and there’s no great way to store them (the top and bottom are curved), and they do hold fingerprints.

	If you love bright corals with some darkness to them, you'll like Gracy. It feels very summery to me, partially because corals are so often part of one's summer routine, but also the level of brightness in the shade.

A Vibrant Orange-Tinged Red for Fall

Guerlain Genna Rouge G Lipstick ($48.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a brightened tomato red–it has definite orange undertones. The finish is creamy, not shimmery, and has a natural sheen. MAC Heartless is more neutral in undertone. OCC Strutter is a little browner. Cle de Peau Red Abundance is just a little more orange and lighter. MAC Strut Your Stuff is a bit lighter. MAC Ruffian Red is bluer-toned. MAC Rockocco is more orange. Urban Decay Revolution is similar. Guerlain Gala has more blue in its undertone.

Genna is a warmer red, but it doesn’t read too orange–it’s definitely a red lip color over all else. I couldn’t detect any shimmer in the base color (sometimes the shimmer in Rouge Gs can be very subtle), but it does have a subtle sheen once applied, so it doesn’t look flat. The color coverage is nearly opaque; you can see a faint outline of my lip freckle. When I wore this shade, it lasted for seven full hours–impressive. One of the reasons I prefer this formula to many others is that longer-wear but the lasting hydration; my lips felt moisturized while I wore this as well as after I removed it. The lipstick has a creamy consistency that glides on but feels more lightweight than you’d think; it’s not thick, doesn’t bleed or feather, and stays put.

	If you love a good warm red that still looks and reads like a red (and not orange), I think you might like Genna. It applies evenly, opaquely, and feels wonderful to wear--moisturizing, long-wearing, and forgiving.

Shimmery Basics – Champagne Shimmer with Guerlain

Guerlain’s fall collection is just starting to pop up on retailers now (but so far, I’m seeing back-order dates, so it’s more like a pre-order). I’m excited, because I picked up Gilda and Bonnie Rouge Gs and Grenade (another Kiss Kiss Gloss shade). For now, though, let’s take a look at Guerlain Sable Show (851) Kiss Kiss Gloss ($32.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.), which is a warm champagne-shimmered beige-peach. It has some multi-colored shimmery bits and bobs, but it is predmoinantly pale champagne–almost white in some lighting. Dior Satin Peach is milkier and has gold shimmer. MAC Naked Space is more opaque, milkier. Hourglass Imagine is similar but also has gold shimmer. Dior Twin Set Pink is similar, a little paler. MAC Jana has a similar look on lips, even though it seems colorless. There’s a smidgen more shimmer content that tends to make it a little more than sheer lipgloss, but it’s still more similar than not.

Kiss Kiss Gloss is supposed to be sheer, hydrating, water-resistant, and comes in three types: petal, pearl, and gloss. I’ve never been sure how one can tell which finish is what. I imagine that Sable Snow is pearly, since it yields a very pearlescent finish. It’s semi-sheer to semi-opaque; there’s a lot of shimmer and sheen, but there’s a lot of translucency so my natural lip color comes out, too. I’d say this tends to warm and lighten my natural lip color.  

Sable Show wore for three and a half hours, which is around average for a gloss, though a little longer for something as light/sheer as this, and my lips felt well-moisturized during and after wearing the gloss.  The consistency reminds me of a creamy gel; it’s not a thin gloss, and it’s on the thicker side, but it’s not goopy or heavy. It’s not MAC Lipglass, which is one of the thicker glosses on the market. It’s non-sticky and stays that way, and it’s scented with a sweet perfume-y fragrance (I can’t seem to place it at the moment–does that ever happen? you totally blank on a scent, and the next time you smell it, you can instantly describe it?).  The applicator is a short brush-type housed inside a clear plastic tube.

	It's almost too shiny to be a perfect everyday shade! There's almost a metallic-like sheen because of the pearly shimmer. This kind of shade is "boring" to some, but it's well-done and wears nicely.

Guerlain Gisela Rouge G Lipstick ($48.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm-toned rusty red with subtle ruby and gold micro-shimmer offset by very subtle orange-brown undertones. Guerlain Habit Rouge is less orange-toned, redder. CoverGirl Burn is darker, redder. Clarins Red Prodige is brighter. Chanel Excessive is brighter, more orange. Guerlain Geisha is similar but a bit more orange. Make Up For Ever #44 is less orange and has no shimmer.

New but also permanent, Gisela is reminiscent of those gold-shimmered reds you see pop up around the holidays, but there’s a little more orange in the red that it reads more autumnal. I think of the changing colors of leaves and fireplaces when I see this color.  The color coverage is opaque with little product, and the consistency is creamy without being heavy or slick.  I didn’t have any feathering or bleeding, and Gisela wore for six and a half hours.  The formula was hydrating and kept my lips feeling hydrated for a few hours post-wear, too.

Guerlain’s lipsticks have a perfume-y scent but no discernible taste and come packaged in a heavy metal case with a flip mirror. It’s elegant to look at, and initially, very luxe and lovely, but practically speaking, it’s almost too heavy, and they’re a pain to store–plus, it’s hard to read the tiny print on the back of the lipstick to see which shade is what. Oh, and they do hold fingerprints. They can take a beating, though. It’s one of my favorite lipstick formulas ever, but I’ve yet to master storage of them!

	It's balanced between fall and holiday, which means it's a more versatile red-orange-gold number that you can downplay or amplify as you wish. The color coverage is fantastic, and the formula itself is comfortable, long-wearing, and hydrating.

Guerlain Fall 2012: Les Fauves L’Ecrin 4 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette

Guerlain Les Fauves L’Ecrin 4 Couleurs Eyeshadow Palette ($59.00 for 0.25 oz.) is new (and permanent!) for fall and will debut at Guerlain counters and retailers in August (though I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw it pop up in the next week or two). This is a very warm-toned palette with distinct orange/red undertones. The one thing I’ve noticed across fall palettes this season is that the colors within them are very similar to each other.

The shade on the left is a medium-dark copper-shimmered red-toned brown with a soft frosted finish. It had excellent pigmentation with a soft, almost buttery texture. Tom Ford Ilicit is redder. NARS Surabaya is a little darker and more red-toned. Make Up For Ever #14 is darker, browner. theBalm Tres Moi is very similar, slightly less warm-toned. MAC Antiqued is almost a dead-ringer except its finish is slightly more metallic.

Next, there is a medium brown with strong orange-red undertones with a mostly matte finish. It was soft to the touch and had great pigmentation. MAC Soft Brown is lighter, more subdued. MAC Brown Script is darker, less orange.

Below that shade is a warm orange with hints of red and coral and a mostly matte finish. This shade had nice color payoff, but it was a little powdery. MAC Neo Orange is brighter but similar. Make Up For Ever #5 is very comparable.

The final shade on the right-hand side of the palette is a warm-toned light-medium copper with a champagne sheen–very metallic in finish. It had a soft, smooth texture with good pigmentation. Bobbi Brown Champagne Truffle is browner. MAC Love Connection is also browner. MAC Rusty is similar but darker. Urban Decay Chopper is more copper. Wet ‘n’ Wild Dancing in the Clouds is similar, slightly more orange-brown. Urban Decay Blaze is less coppery.

When I was on vacation last week, I took this palette along and wore the coral, medium brown, and light-medium copper shades together.  The colors wore without fading or creasing for a full ten hours, both over and without a primer–quite impressive.  Three of the four shades had beautiful textures and superb pigmentation; the only shade that was mildly disappointing was the coral shade, which was a little powdery.  The palette is housed in a gold-tinted metal compact (lovely and sturdy to hold, but it does show fingerprints) and contains a full-sized mirror and sponge-tipped applicator inside.  It has a good amount of product, too; a full-sized eyeshadow is typically around 0.05 oz., and each of these is just over 0.06 oz.
