Chanel Etole Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Fall 2011: Etole Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Etole Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark berry red with a hint of plum. When worn, it is dark without being overwhelmingly so; it’s a softened dark, if that makes any sense! There is a hint of shine, and the lip color really seems to melt into the natural lip and ends up looking rather natural. It’s a very fitting shade for fall, and I think it is incredibly easy to wear, particularly for thsoe who tend to stay away from darker lip colors. This is dark without being dominating.

Rouge Cocos are described as hydrating, though I find them only somewhat moisturizing overall. Etole has less frost and shimmer, and it wears better for it–it’s more moisturizing and applies evenly to lips without catching on any imperfections as a drier frost might. I was able to get about four hours of good wear with this particular shade. The color of this shade is nearly opaque (just a hint of my lip freckle peeks through). I do see it pulling red on those with more naturally red lips.

I thought it was most similar to Cle de Peau #117 Extra Silky Lipstick, which is perhaps a touch pinker, less berry. Dior Raspberry Serum is a bit redder and darker. MAC Capricious is similar but less opaque and on the pinker side.

As one of the first products I tested from Chanel's fall collection, it raised the bar! The color is perfect for fall, with its soft vampy feel, but still very wearable.

Chanel Gardenia Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Gardenia Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Summer 2011: Gardenia

Chanel Gardenia Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark rose pink with subtle golden micro-shimmer and shine. The color applies semi-opaque–almost covering my lip freckle but not entirely–and deposits color evenly. Like many other Rouge Cocos, the finish is shimmery and borders on frosty.

It looks like it is slightly less pink than Camelia (part of the permanent range of Rouge Cocos), but I don’t own it, so I couldn’t compare.  For a more affordable comparison, you might try MAC Ramblin’ Rose, which may be noticeably rosier, though.

my thoughts on the formula: Rouge Coco is a slightly drier formula, because most of the shades are frost finishes, but I don’t find it drying–it’s just not moisturizing. It has a light vanilla-rose scent that’s rather faint but still detectable. It doesn’t seem to linger, though. On average, Rouge Cocos last four hours on me. I like the formula overall, and the shade range tends to be very wearable with a wide variety of colors from pinks to browns to reds.

P.S. – I already reviewed Sari Dore previously.

There is enough warmth from the golden micro-shimmer to make it wearable on warmer skin tones but not so much gold that those with cooler skin tones won't find it equally flattering. This is the kind of pink that looks good across skin tones, because it's not too pale or deep.

Chanel Teheran Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Teheran Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Rouge Coco: Teheran

Chanel Teheran (56) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a frosted pinked coral with soft iridescent pink-fuchsia shimmer. It’s a warmer shade, which means it will suit warmer complexions with ease. I think the way the pink sheen catches the light may make it wearable for cooler skin tones, though. For a Rouge Coco, it has a surprising amount of color coverage–virtually opaque–and didn’t seem as dry as other shades I’ve tried with similar frost finishes.

my thoughts on the formula: Rouge Coco is a slightly drier formula, because most of the shades are frost finishes, but I don’t find it drying–it’s just not moisturizing. It has a light vanilla-rose scent that’s rather faint but still detectable. It doesn’t seem to linger, though. On average, Rouge Cocos last four hours on me. The Rouge Coco formula is most suitable for those with relatively healthy lips; if your lips are dry and cracking, I would recommend opting for a more moisturizing formula (perhaps Rouge Allure, if you want to stay within Chanel).

Chanel Taffeta Rose Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Cote d’Azur: Taffeta Rose

Chanel Taffeta Rose (16) Rouge Coco Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is brightened dark pink with subtle fuchsia micro-shimmer. It is shade from Chanel’s Cote d’Azur Collection.  The finish has a frostiness that’s not overwhelming but more noticeable here than in other Rouge Cocos.  I also felt like this one emphasized even the most minute imperfections on the lips.

Rouge Coco is a slightly drier formula, because most of the shades are frost finishes, but I don’t find it drying–it’s just not moisturizing. Pigmentation ranges from semi-sheer to semi-opaque, with a few shades being quite opaque and a couple on the sheerer side.

P.S. — I’m wearing Benefit Sugarbomb blush on cheeks.

FINAL THOUGHTS: The Rouge Coco formula is most suitable for those with relatively healthy lips; if  your lips are dry and cracking, I would recommend opting for a more moisturizing formula (perhaps  Rouge Allure, if you want to stay within Chanel).  Taffeta Rose would suit both cool and warmer skin tones, because while it is slightly cool, it doesn’t pull too blue.

Chanel Peregrina Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Peregrina Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Spring 2011: Peregrina

Chanel Peregrina Rouge Coco Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is semi-sheer, lightened peach with a touch of pink to keep it muted and not orange. It has faint pale peach/white micro-shimmer and a soft, reflective shine. It is a new shade from the the Spring collection, which is online now and seems to be coming out in stores rapidly, too.

It is pinker and less frosty than Ruban Rose. It is brighter and packed with more color than Stunning. The closest Rouge Coco shade would be Chintz. which is a touch more muted. Smashbox Splendid is incredibly similar with no real discernible difference in color.

Rouge Coco is a slightly drier formula, because most of the shades are frost finishes, but I don’t find it drying–it’s just not moisturizing. It has a light vanilla-rose scent that’s rather faint but still detectable. It doesn’t seem to linger, though. On average, Rouge Cocos last four hours on me. I like the formula overall, and the shade range tends to be very wearable with a wide variety of colors from pinks to browns to reds.

FINAL THOUGHTS: For spring, it’s a shade one would expect to see.  It should be flattering on a wide range of skin tones, because it’s not too warm of a peach, and the semi-sheer color makes it blend with the natural lip color, too.  The Rouge Coco formula is most suitable for those with relatively healthy lips; if your lips are dry and cracking, I would recommend opting for a more moisturizing formula (perhaps Rouge Allure, if you want to stay within Chanel).

Chanel Jersey Rose Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Jersey Rose Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Spring 2011: Jersey Rose

Chanel Jersey Rose Rouge Coco Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium yellow-based rosy pink with a touch of peach that keeps it warm and light. It has very faint pink micro-shimmer. There is a distinct rosiness to it, but it’s not as pink as most rosy shades are, which is nice, and this is a lovely color for spring–light, airy, and feminine.  It is a new shade from the the Spring collection, which is online now and seems to be coming out in stores rapidly, too.

It actually seems like a warmer version of Chanel Magnolia, which was cooler pink and nearly lilac on me. Similarly, it’s a little warmer (almost peachier) than Rose Dentelle (from fall). It is a little lighter than Lancome Voile de Rose; touch darker than Shiseido PK224.

FINAL THOUGHTS: It’s a very fitting shade for spring, because it’s light but still deposits plenty of color, and it’s not so light that it washes you out. The Rouge Coco formula is most suitable for those with relatively healthy lips; if your lips are dry and cracking, I would recommend opting for a more moisturizing formula (perhaps Rouge Allure, if you want to stay within Chanel).
