Chanel Grace Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Grace Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Grace Rouge Coco Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm-toned, reddish plum with a soft golden pearl. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency was smooth and creamy enough that it didn’t tug or pull at lips. It was neither hydrating nor drying and lasted four and a half hours when I wore it. NARS Falbala is cooler-toned. NARS Beautiful Liar is warmer. MAC One of a Kind is sheerer. Guerlain Quand Vient l’Ete is slightly lighter. Giorgio Armani #526 is more muted. Chanel Bel Ami is slightly less warm-toned. See comparison swatches.

Sentiment Rouge Coco Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm, light-medium peach with a soft, slightly frosted sheen. It had mostly opaque color. The consistency was lightly creamy and glided across the lips smoothly. The color deposited slightly unevenly, though.  It was very slightly hydrating, and it lasted four hours. NARS Biscayne Park is warmer. MAC Style Surger is brighter. MAC Reel Sexy is slightly pinker. MAC Razzledazzler is a smidgen darker. MAC Ever Hip is pinker. Estee Lauder Naked is more matte. Burberry Devon Sunset is slightly darker. See comparison swatches.

Chanel Liaison Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Liaison Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Liaison Rouge Coco Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a warm, light-medium pink with a soft sheen. It’s warmer than a pure pink, but it’s too pink to really be a true coral. NYX Stella is lighter, less warm-toned. MAC Blossom Culture is sheerer, warmer. MAC Sunny Seoul is darker, pinker. MAC Betty Bright is brighter, slightly warmer. Guerlain Giuelette is darker, warmer. Bobbi Brown Pink Peony is darker.
See comparison swatches.

The consistency fell between lightly creamy and moderately creamy; it was noticeably stiff compared to the creamier shades in the formula, but it wasn’t the creamiest, either. It had mostly opaque color coverage, but it didn’t apply as evenly or as smoothly as the other shades I’ve recently reviewed. It lasted four hours, which is about average, and it was lightly hydrating while I wore it.

Chanel Ce Soir Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Ce Soir Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Ce Soir Rouge Coco Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted plum with pink tones, subtle warm undertones, and a natural sheen. NARS Casablanca is darker, less pink. NARS Falbala is sheerer, more shimmery. NARS Mayflower is sheerer. MAC Craving is pinker, cooler. Chanel Bel Ami is warmer, less pink. Chanel Etole is darker, warmer. See comparison swatches.  The consistency was lightly creamy without being too slick or too wet, and it felt lightweight and comfortable applied–no heaviness or thickness from the creamy texture.  It was fully opaque, and Ce Soir wore for five hours and was lightly hydrating during that time.

Le Baiser Rouge Coco Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a brightened, medium pink with subtle warm undertones (it seems to lean just slightly warm) and a soft, frosted finish. MAC Heart to Heart is warmer. MAC Force of Love is lighter. Chanel Enjouee is warmer, more coral. Guerlain Gourmandise is brighter, darker. See comparison swatches.  The texture of Le Baiser was only somewhat creamy–it was noticeably stiffer/drier compared to Ce Soir–which I expect is from the frost content in it.  It doesn’t tug or pull at lips; it’s just not as creamy.  The color applied with nearly opaque color (there is a very faint outline of my lip freckle coming through, but you wouldn’t be able to tell from afar).  It lasted five and a half hours, but it wasn’t hydrating (luckily, it wasn’t drying either).

Chanel Amant Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Amant Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Amant Rouge Coco Lipstick ($34.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a muted, coral-red with subtle warm undertones and a natural sheen. MAC Must Be Red is brighter, warmer. Guerlain Rouge Sensuel is less pigmented, lighter. Guerlain Coque d’Or is more shimmery. Dior Lady is slightly darker. See comparison swatches.

This is one of five shades in chanel’s Avant-Premiere collection, which are all new and part of the permanent range. The Rouge Coco formula is supposed to glide on, be hydrating and moisturizing, and provide full coverage color. Amant was opaque, and the consistency was lightweight, creamy, and applied even, smooth color without pulling or tugging on the lips. This shade lasted five and a half hours on me, and it did leave a light stain behind. I found it moderately hydrating while I wore it, but what really stood out to me was just how smooth the color looked applied to lips. It really looked like it had melted and combined my natural lips so it never looked heavy.

Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Caractere Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.50 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “rose brown.” It is a rosy plum with subtle gold micro-shimmer. There’s a soft, muted quality to the overall color. MAC Offshoot is pinker, redder. MAC Oh Oh Oh is redder and has more obvious gold shimmer. MAC Sophisto is sheerer but similar in color. Clarins Blackberry is a bit darker, less pink. Chanel Stunt is a touch less pink and lighter.

It has full color coverage, and the finish is just barely frosted–a little sheen, a hint of shimmer.  The texture is creamy without being thick or slippery–there’s enough give so it slides and doesn’t pull or tug at lips.  Rouge Coco isn’t the most hydrating formula I’ve tried, but this particular shade was moderately moisturizing–not drying at all but it felt like I needed hydration shortly after this wore off.  Caractere wore for four and a half hours.  Chanel’s lipstick is perfume-scented (maybe rose?) but I didn’t detect any taste.

Caractere is such a beautiful color for fall! It's dark and sultry without being vampy. It doesn't dominate a look, but it certainly helps to add definition. The formula had great color coverage and wore well.

Chanel Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick
Chanel Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Spring 2012: Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick

Chanel Destinee Rouge Coco Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as “plum.” It’s an ever-so-slightly muted raspberry plum with a healthy shine and semi-opaque color coverage. MAC Craving is a bit darker. Maybelline Bit of Berry is slightly brighter. MAC Positively Dashing is similar in color but has a frostier finish. MAC Red Dwarf is more opaque and darker. Dior Ruby is redder.

The Rouge Coco formula is good but falls short of some of the brand’s claims, primarily hydration, which it doesn’t provide–it’s neither drying nor moisturizing. The color range is typically semi-opaque to opaque with a lightweight feel. Destinee wore for around four hours and was comfortable to wear.  I think this kind of color is supremely flattering across skin tones, both in terms of undertones and color.  It’s not too dark or vampy, so it won’t feel too bold against even the palest of skin, but it has enough color and oomph to complement darker skin tones, too.
