Chanel Rose Favorite Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.07 oz.) is described as an “audacious pink.” It’s a brightened, medium rosy pink with mostly neutral undertones; it looks subtly cool-toned in the pan but against my skin tone, it looks neutral to slightly warm. It has a mostly matte finish. Dior Bow is a smidgen darker and cooler-toned–Rose Favorite appears softer, less fuchsia. Guerlain Terra Azzurra #2 is cooler-toned. MAC More Amour is redder.

If you’ve always wanted a “bright pink” eyeshadow, Rose Favorite is a subtle introduction that may pain your wallet but will allow you to explore the possibilities without having full, in-your-face, kind of brightness.  It’s nicely pigmented, but there’s a soft, muted quality to the color that keeps it from being a truly bright pink (like you might expect from brands famous-for-their-brights, like Make Up For Ever and Urban Decay).  The texture is incredibly soft, almost buttery, and very, very finely-milled; there is a little excess powder that kicks up when used, but it seemed to settle quite nicely once applied to the eye.  That softness, however, lends itself to being easy blended on the eye, and it can be sheered out more readily if you don’t want opaque color.  Rose Favorite wore for eight hours well on me, and there was some very faint fading after nine hours.

Chanel Eclaire Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as “sheer gold.” It’s a pale yellow gold with a soft, frosted metallic sheen. theBalm Snobby is similar but a smidgen yellower. Bare Escentuals Aspire is more orange. theBalm Wild Child is lighter. Urban Decay Eldorado is a hair yellower. Buxom Poodle is lighter. Giorgio Armani #1 Madreperla is a bit more orange-toned. Giorgio Armani #18 is similar but a bit paler.

Gah! Chanel! Of all the shades you label as “sheer,” this one? It’s not sheer! What kind of madness are you trying to create? Furtif was sheer. This is pigmented! Opaque! Rich in color! It might be a soft shade, but there’s not much underlying sheerness. The texture is silky-smooth, ultra-finely milled, so you could certainly sheer it out, but it packs a a fair dosage of color without having to pack it on. On the lid, it’s pretty pigmented; not totally opaque, but it’s close. It blends out easily, because it’s so soft, resulting in a smidgen of powderiness.

When I wore it, there was very light fading after eight hours along the lash line and outer edge, but it was mostly intact and there was no creasing to be seen.  It has the same look, feel, and resulting shimmer/sparkle of Complice, which was a beautiful color for all over the lid.  If Chanel hadn’t used the word “sheer” to describe this, it’d be just as good. It’s a little too pigmented to be sheer–you shouldn’t have to barely touch the pan of color to get sheer color!

	This is a puzzle of a shade! If you like opaque color, dazzling, shimmering finishes, consider it and consider it an A- product. If you were anticipating a gorgeous sheer gold, well, it's a little more pigmented than that.

Chanel Furtif Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as “silver-grey.” It has a light-medium gray base with a silverish shimmer-sheen; it almost looks a little brown-toned. Guerlain Les Gris is similar, perhaps more metallic. Giorgio Armani #22 is more metallic. Tarina Tarantion Mr. Silver is lighter. MAC Electra has more of a satin finish but is similar in color.

I wish I could say Furtif was better than Infini, but it’s only marginally so and infinitely worse compared to Complice. It’s noticeably sheer swatched, and it acts the same way when applied to the lid, with or without a base, wet or dry. It adheres better than Infini, and it doesn’t make the lid look dry almost by clumping up in places, but you have to pack on the color, and if you blend it, it easily fades to oblivion. It wears for about six and a half hours, and after seven hours, there’s noticeable fading.

There’s one more shade for fall, Eclaire, which I’m in the process of testing, so it is with fingers crossed that it fairs better than the last two!

Chanel Infini Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as “silver.” It’s a light silver with a frosted, metallic finish. Guerlain Les Aquas is similar but more metallic, slightly darker. MAC Misty is very similar. MAC Filament is a bit darker. Bobbi Brown Tinsel is similar in color but chunkier in texture.

The color payoff was disappointing, and I absolutely had to use it wet in order to get a somewhat smooth finish. I tried to apply it to the lid, and it was sheer and patchy, despite trying to pack on the color. It feels so soft to the touch, but it just doesn’t come together for me. I still attempted to wear it, even if it did look awful from the get-go, and it was slightly creased after eight hours when worn alone or over a primer.  When I wore it over a primer, the pigmentation was better, but it still wasn’t great.  The texture, for as soft as it is, doesn’t seem to hold together, which is what causes sheerer color payoff and patchy application.

I was excited for my order to arrive, but this is a far cry from the excellence that was Complice.  It’s surprising to see a silver shade like Infini fall so flat, because I feel like there are so many silver eyeshadows on the market and plenty of them have rich pigmentation.  The metallic nature of silvers also means they often go on smoothly, too.

Chanel Complice Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “soft peach.” It’s a soft, delicate peach with a subtle hint of pink. The finish is highly frosted, borderline metallic. MAC Fusion Gold is slightly darker. theBalm Stubborn is very similar but less shimmery. MAC Nubile is a little lighter. MAC Orb is similar but has a nearly matte finish. Urban Decay Scratch is barely pinker and has more of a sheen. theBalm Luscious Lani is more metallic and peachy.

This kind of shade usually receives two types of responses:  ”This is my holy grail everyday shade!” and “This is SO dupeable, who would ever pay that much for it?”  Complice is a dupeable shade to say the least! There were numerous dupes (mentioned above) that were very, very close.  I think what will set it apart for those who typically purchase high-end is the texture.  Chanel’s Soft Touch Eyeshadows are exactly that: soft to the touch; insanely finely-milled to the point that they almost feel like a cream, because they’re so soft and buttery. They tend to melt against the skin once applied.  It is a great everyday shade, because it brightens and wakes up the most tired eyes with its slightly warm, shimmery look.

When I wore Complice for wear, it wore for a full eight hours without creasing, whether over a primer or on bare lids. The color payoff was a little sheer when I swatched it initially, but it was mostly opaque on the lid when I applied it with a brush. It definitely looked best when applied over a primer, though.

P.S. — I hope to review the other shades from the fall collection, but my order from Nordstrom’s is still in transit so sit tight.

Chanel Tigerlily Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “golden orange.” It’s a warm tangerine orange with a soft golden orange shimmer set in a low-sheen finish. It reminded me a lot of MAC Juiced, which is a little dirtier–not quite as clean of a color as Tigerlily.  MAC Straw Harvest is also similar but lighter.

The color payoff is good, delivering a healthy amount of color without having to pack it on, and the texture is soft, smooth, and even. Though I’m not always in love with Chanel’s eyeshadow quads, I’ve had really good luck with their individual eyeshadow formula. They tend to have that silky-smooth feel that just adheres to the lid without work; it’s like they just melt against the skin for a smooth appearance that’s about as natural as orange skin is ever going to look. The shimmer is faint but noticeable; it enhances but doesn’t overwhelm, so if you find frosty finishes tend to accentuate lid texture, this is a nice way to get some of the reflective qualities of a frostier finish without that problem.

	This type of orange is very on-trend for 2012, and the balance between softness and vibrancy is done well with Tigerlily. It has enough brightness not to look burnt, but it's not so bright that it reads neon.
