Chanel Vision Illusion d’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “gold.” It’s a bright, yellow gold with a glittery, metallic finish. L’Oreal Eternal Sunshine is softer. L’Oreal Gold Imperial is similar but not as dark or as yellow. Giorgio Armani #1 is similar but more orange, less metallic. OCC Triptych is yellower. Inglot #404 is a bit darker but comparable in color.

The texture of this felt smooth when really sheered out, but if you make an attempt to layer or go for opaque color, it does not apply smoothly no matter how much I tried to coax it. The best way to wear it is really as a wash, just a sheer bit of color, because it minimizes its tendency to ball up into chunks on the lid.  I recommend applying prior to foundation, too, as quite a few sparkles will get elsewhere.  I had some minor fall out during wear, but by and large, it stayed put.  After wearing this for eight hours, again, there was some fall out, but it hadn’t creased.  It isn’t yet out, but it is part of the soon-to-be-released Les Expressions de Chanel collection.

	I'm not keen on the way it looks on the lid, as a result of the sheerer color payoff, because it looks uneven on. It sparkles and shimmers in a delightful way, and from several feet away, it is quite pretty. When I glance casually in the mirror, it's not so nice.

Chanel Abstraction Illusion d’Ombre Long Wear Luminous Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “peach rose.” It looks very coral-pink in the pot, slightly pinker when swatched, but on my lid, it looked closer to the color you see in the pot–more coral-pink than anything else. Certainly warm-toned with coppery-gold and pink sparkle. MAC Love Spice is less pink. Urban Decay Free Love is much more coral and vibrant. MAC Quartz Fusion is redder.

It isn’t yet out, but it is part of the soon-to-be-released Les Expressions de Chanel collection.  When applied dry, it has sheerer payoff, such that it is a smattering sparkles and less metallic.  When applied damp, it has better pigmentation, though not quite opaque.  The color is buildable and after two or three layers, you’ll find mostly opaque coverage.   It’s not as smooth as the best Illusion d’Ombres, but it’s definitely not chunky or gritty or glittery.  It’s more shimmery, almost sparkly.  I wore it alone all over the lid, and it lasted for twelve hours without creasing or fading.  There was minimal, but noticeable, fall out–the kind that you notice but won’t look like a disco ball from across the room.

Chanel Destination Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is described as a “pale-satin shade [that] adds a silver-blue accent to eyes.” It’s a subdued, silver-ish blue with a frosted, metallic finish. When sheered out, it’s almost more silver-white with just a hint of blue. MAC Bright Moon is darker, grayer. Buxom Husky is bluer and lighter–more sky blue. Urban Decay Strip is a bit darker. Urban Decay Mary Jane is also similar, a bit bluer–richer. Inglot #429 is more periwinkle.

I’ve been wanting to review this for awhile, but it’s been sold out online (sold out before I even received mine!) and though it was supposed to be available at regular counters/retailers, I’ve yet to see it pop up online. Luckily, when I checked this weekend, it’s back in stock on Chanel.com. Sometimes I love Illusion d’Ombres, and sometimes, they’re a bit of a miss. Destination is more of a miss for me, unfortunately.

The downfall of Destination is that it doesn’t apply opaque, even if you make an attempt to build it, because it doesn’t apply very evenly. It’s a little splotchy and patchy. As a result, it works better as a base color or applied very sheerly as a wash of shimmer. I think other shades within the formula do a better job of merely illuminating eyes if that was your goal. Destination wore for six hours well, but by eight hours, there was noticeable fading.

Chanel Apparence Illusion d’Ombre Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a new and limited edition “gold bronze” releasing just in time for the holidays. It’s a shimmering, pale bronze with a subtle golden warmth. The finish is strongly metallic with a fair bit of sparkle. Bobbi Brown Bronze is similar, slightly darker, and has chunky sparkle. Urban Decay Maui Wowie is a smidgen darker and has glitter. Giorgio Armani #18 is yellower.

Illusion d’Ombre is a long-wearing eyeshadow with a gel texture and can be worn as an eyeshadow or as an eyeliner.  It feels spongy; you can see in my pot that it’s pulled away from the sides, but a simple push of the product with a spatula spread it back into place.  Upon touch, it hadn’t dried out or anything, either (in case you were curious!).  When applied, it has a slight translucent quality to the overall color, which actually makes it look nice as a wash, but it’s not fully opaque.  It also appears lighter on than it does in the pot, which is a result of the high sheen finish.

When I took it for a test-drive, it lasted for a full eight hours without creasing or fading, and perhaps, more importantly, I didn’t experience any fall out. There’s a sparkle to it that’s not obvious but noticeable, on top of the metallic finish. I think so long as you weren’t looking for fully opaque color, you’ll like this. I can see a lot of Chanel fans more than happy with this shade release.

Chanel Riviere Illusion d’Ombre Long-Wear Cream Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a pale shimmering green with subtle golden shimmer. A warmer, seafoam green, if you will. I couldn’t think of any shades that really were that similar. Urban Decay Money is darker, bluer. MAC Fresh & Mint is cooler-toned, almost bluish. Dior Garden Pastels was darker, more intense.

This formula is supposed to be shimmering and long-wearing with a soft, cushion-y gel texture. It can be worn as an eyeshadow or as an eyeliner.  Riviere is sheer to semi-opaque–I wasn’t able to build-up the color enough so that it was fully opaque.  Every shade I’ve come across within this range, except for Fantasme, has been opaque.  I also had some trouble getting an even layer of color, as this had a tendency to bunch up on itself, which would make it look uneven on the lid.  Whether or not a color is sheer or opaque, you still want an even layer of color.  The texture is soft, bouncy–definitely that “cushion-y” texture coming into play.  I was worried about the wear, given the problematic application, but it looked exactly as it did when initially applied ten hours later.

P.S. — This was originally a Nordstrom exclusive (that’s where I bought mine), but it has since been removed from Nordstrom–luckily, Chanel released it as an online exclusive to their own website as well, which is where you can purchase it at present.

	The wear continues to be impressive--not a crease, not even fading--but this particular color is a little fussy. If you only want to wear it as a sheer layer, then it'd be something worth considering. If you wanted to have a bit more color, I'd consider another shade.

Chanel Fall 2011: Illusion d’Ombre Long-Wear Luminous Eyeshadow

Chanel Illusion d’Ombre Long-Wear Luminous Eyeshadow ($36.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a new product for fall, and it comes in six different shades. Chanel describes these as: “This intensely shimmering long-wear eyeshadow offers true versatility. An innovative gel texture that is both soft and cushiony allows it to be worn as eyeshadow or eyeliner. Includes a specially designed shadow/liner brush, developed specifically for this unique formula.”

I think the most common question I got asked regarding these was, “How do these compare to Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense?” The easy answer: they don’t. They’re in glass pots with black lids, and they’re really quite differennt otherwise. The formulas are not the same at all. There is such a drastic difference in the texture alone that they do not invite comparison. In terms of color, there may be similarities, but that is no different than comparing any eyeshadow to either of these products. It’s like comparing a the formula of a cream eyeshadow to that of a powder eyeshadow. The texture of these is most like Buxom’s Stay There eyeshadows but these are springier.

• Fantasme is a bright white with silvery-white shimmer. Of the six, this was the only one that I would categorize as sheer. This is more like white and silver shimmer spread through a clear base. It adds sparkle rather than color. MAC’s Pearl Reflects Glitter is most comparable, but it is a chunkier glitter and will need an adhesive base or modifier to get it to stay (and last I heard, MAC’s Glitters were not eye safe).
• Emerveille is a soft peach with a hint of brown and a champagne shimmer-sheen. theBalm’s Luscious Lani is very similar in color, perhaps a touch less peach. It seems like it would also be comparable to Benefit’s RSVP.
• Illusoire is a smoky, purple-mauve over a grayish-brown base with a silvery sheen. This has a frostier finish, compared to the subtly metallic finish of Emerveille. It is similar to MAC Hint of Sapphire, but it doesn’t have the multi-colored shimmer (however, it applies infinitely better). It’s a little taupe, but it does lean purple, so it’s not a true taupe. It ends up looking rather similar to the grayish-purple shade from the same collection’s Prelude Eyeshadow Quad, just with a more shimmery finish.
• Epatant is a smoky, muted taupe with a hint of green with an antique gold shimmer-sheen. MAC Greensmoke is much darker and greener, while Make Up For Ever #84 is closer in overall color/feel, it is more intense.
• Mirifique is a dark black with multi-colored shimmer and larger silver sparkle. I can’t think of a dupe for this particular shade, because the way the glitter sits on the black base makes it different. Perhaps MAC Black Tied, but Black Tied is a weaker formula with less color payoff.
• Ebloui is a burgundy brown with warm, red undertones and multi-colored shimmer that is dominated by gold and cranberry. On me, my yellower undertones pull out the brown tones, while I would expect pinker undertones to pull out the burgundy tones. I couldn’t find a dupe for this one; it’s brown yet burgundy. It might be duped with a mix of Urban Decay Gash and MAC Cranberry.

The texture of these is bizarre–they’re spongy but they bounce back. I imagine this is the texture most expected out of MAC Big Bounce Eyeshadows, actually. They are a gel-based formula, but they have the thickness of a cream, creaminess of a mousse, and springiness of a sponge. It spreads really nicely and evenly on the lid without being sheer (unless you deliberately apply a minute amount).

I found five of the six to be nicely pigmented with no concerns for lack of color payoff–Fantasme was the only one I found lacking in that department. The colors themselves are soft and subtle, with an edge of smokiness, and they tend to be more than just one flat color, so they will easily take on different tones depending on how they’re worn, what they’re paired with, and the undertones in the skin.

On me, these wear twelve hours (worn alone, no primer) without creasing, fading, migrating, or smudging. They apply evenly over the lid, and they’re blendable for long enough to give you time to soften any edges but are never fully wet, so they don’t gather into the creases and lines of the eye before it fully sets. Once it sets, it really doesn’t budge.

The brush included with each shade is actually useful, though in all honesty, it’ll be thrown into a drawer (along with all of those velvety pouches that I don’t use but can’t bear to toss). It works, and it does work well with these–it’s a nice touch, because it’s a quality brush with a thin, angled edge to allow for lining but with enough area to also apply all-over the lid. I prefer brushes with longer handles, but this is one of the better brushes I’ve seen included with a product.

Fantasme, again, was the only shade that was less-than-stellar, and of course, it would not earn the same marks as these do overall or as the other shades.  It is one of six, and it is the only one with any reason for a reduction in rating.  I would give it a 7 on pigmentation and 8.5 on texture.  Again, this is why I prefer reviewing individual shades rather than groups of shades in one post!
