Chanel Mouche de Beaute Illuminating Powder ($80.00 for 0.42 oz.) is described as an “elegant gold shade enhanced with pink highlights.” It’s a warm-toned, golden champagne with champagne sparkle; there’s a faint hint of pink that I spotted at a glance at the product in the pan, but against my warm complexion, I couldn’t see any effect from the coloring. Bobbi Brown 24 Karat is very similar in color and has a metallic sheen, too, just less sparkle. NARS Satellite of Love has a darker, tanner base color. bareMinerals Secret Radiance is a bit darker when swatched heavly, but on the skin, it really looks rather similar applied.

It had a much more sparkly finish than I expected based on the description and even from just looking at the texture of the product, which came off as very metallic but not that it would have larger sparkle in it. The texture is soft, almost cream-like, because it’s a very smooth, dense product.  Applied, it does yield a rather metallic sheen wherever it’s applied, even if it’s really worked into the skin.  The sparkles are somewhat there, but some get lost in the brush and blended away.  It somewhat emphasizes the skin’s natural texture along with pores; not the most emphasis I’ve come across but enough that’s noticeable.   I put this on straight away this morning, and it started to get a little patchy after seven hours of wear but there was still some left after eight hours.

I kind of wish Chanel hadn’t ran a free two-day shipping promo (because it’s what made me cave and hold out hope I could receive and turnaround a review before it sold out), because for $80, it was disappointing to see emphasis of pores/skin texture.  Brands like Chanel are famous for beautiful powders that reflect light in spectacular ways without emphasizing pores, so Mouche de Beaute was most definitely a miss.

Chanel Poudre Signee de Chanel Illuminating Powder ($68.00 for 0.28 oz.) is described as a “sheer highlighting powder” that creates a “soft pink powder” that can be used to “reflect light with a delicate luminosity.” It’s a pale beige with a soft hint of pink and a golden shimmer-sheen. As described, it’s a soft, sheer powder that works best when dusted over the high planes of the face. Chantecaille Les Petales de Rose is significantly pinker and has a finer shimmer/sheen.
MAC Lightscapade is whiter, cooler-toned. theBalm Promiscuous Pearl is more frosted. Chanel Beiges Ombres Tissees is more frosted/metallic but close in color.

Poudre Signee de Chanel is lightly warmed-up, but it has a little pink and beige mix that makes it slightly different than the recent highlighters I’ve reviewed, which have been really pink or really beige in comparison.  It gives skin a soft, warm glow that’s not too shimmery, frosted, or metallic.  The powder itself is finely-milled with a shimmer-sheen finish, so it’s not completely subtle, but it’s not so shimmery that it emphasizes pores.  It sits well on the skin and is easy to blend out and apply to the skin.  When I wore this, it lasted seven hours at full-power but looked a little faded after eight hours of wear.

Chanel Lumiere d’Artifices Beiges Illuminating Powder ($65.00 for 0.63 oz.) is designed to be a beige-based highlighter with an iridescent finish. It’s a soft peachy beige with a very fine shimmer-sheen. It has a glitter overlay that doesn’t seem to go all the way through, so while you might see some sparkles on the initial swatch or application, they’re not there going forward. NARS Miss Liberty is more shimmery but still similar. MAC How Beautiful is more beige. MAC Rose Ole is slightly darker and less peach.

The texture of the powder is very finely-milled, but it does err on the side of powdery–a lot of excess powder is loosened the moment your brush makes contact with it. The powderiness translated on the cheeks, too, but can be taken down by spritzing water (true with most powdery finishes).  It does feel so soft and silky, though, so I was disappointed by how it did look powdery when applied.  If you like a really subtle highlighter, the way this reflects light is minimal but noticeable–it’s one of the subtler highlighters I’ve come across in the past few months.  When I tested the wear on my cheeks, it managed around seven hours before looking a little faded (it was hard to tell, since this is so skin-colored against my complexion).
