Chanel Intrigue Glossimer Lipgloss
Chanel Intrigue Glossimer Lipgloss

Chanel Intrigue Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “red-brown.” It’s a medium-dark, subdued red–it’s warm, brown-hued, and shimmer-less. MAC Pret-a-Papier is a bit redder and has lots of shimmer. Chanel Braise has shimmer and is slightly more plum. MAC Looks Like Sin is similar. MAC Whoops is brighter, more coral.

Intrigue is very comfortable to wear, because the consistency isn’t too thick or too thin, so it feels lightweight on lips but still has a cushion-y feel.  The texture is non-sticky as well.  This shade wore for four hours on me with semi-opaque color coverage, minimal settling into lip lines, and even color overall.  It has a delightfully high-shine finish that gives lips an illusion of fullness.

Chanel Mystery Glossimer Lipgloss
Chanel Mystery Glossimer Lipgloss

Chanel Mystery Glossimer Lipgloss ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “fresh rosewood.” It’s a soft pink-peach with a creamy finish. MAC Persistent Peach is similar but a smidgen brighter. MAC So Vain is darker, pinker. Dior Pink Veil is pinker, shimmery. YSL Pure Watermelon is more orange. Benefit Spiked Punch is similar but shimmery. Chanel Caprice is a bit pinker and shimmery.

Mystery is non-sticky, lightweight, and very comfortable to wear.  The consistency isn’t too thick or too thin, and for a creamy gloss  it settles very little into the lip lines–certainly not noticeable from a regular viewing distance.  It also applied rather evenly.  When I tested it out, it lasted for four hours, which was good.  This gloss has a high-shine finish that gives lips a fuller look (just an illusion).  It’s a your-lips-but-better kind of shade with better coverage.

Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss
Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss

Chanel Allegorie Glossimer Lipgloss ($29.50 for 0.19 fl. oz.) is described as a “sheer shimmering pink.” It’s new and limited edition from Chanel’s holiday collection, which will debut this October. It’s a pale, light-medium pink with subtle yellow undertones and a dusting of warm white shimmer. If you have more pigmented lips, this will lighten it, as there is some color in it, it’s just a light one at that–you can see how it softens and covers up my lip freckle somewhat. Because it’s pale and sheer, it’s more dupeable than not. Here are a few I came up with: NARS International Velvet is less warm-toned, Chanel Caprice is more opaque, MAC Fresh Air is pinker, and Bobbi Brown Pastel has pink shimmer.

What makes Glossimers popular are their non-sticky, thin consistency combined with high gloss finish and sparkling shimmer. They also tend to wear a little longer than the average gloss.  Allegorie wore for four hours, which is about average across all gloss, though a little better than average for such a sheer color.    The shimmer isn’t too dense, so it doesn’t look frosted or metallic on, but it does catch the light nicely and have a very Glossimer-like feel and look. I liked that it while it was sheer, it wasn’t completely colorless.   It was comfortable on, both hydrating and non-sticky.  It could have applied just slightly more evenly.

If you're not a fan of all the bold, richer lip colors that tend to dominate the fall and holiday collections, you're in luck--Allegorie delivers a little color, some shimmer, but it's noticeable.

Chanel Calypso Glossimer
Chanel Calypso Glossimer

Chanel Calypso Glossimer

Chanel Calypso Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 oz.) is a medium-dark burnt tangerine with soft gold shimmer. MAC Caqui is a bit redder and much more opaque, so it also looks more intense. MAC Knockout is darker, more vibrant, and redder. MAC Dare to Wear is more shimmery and a little lighter. Lancome Cherrywood Luxe is redder.

Calypso is semi-opaque and applies fairly evenly without settling into lip lines too noticeably.  It has a healthy glossy shine, and it wears for four and a half hours.  Chanel’s signature gloss formula is supposed to deliver shimmer and “high-shine glow” with shades that range from “sheer and natural” to “sparkling and rich.” The formula is supposed to be both comfortable and long-wearing.  The formula is moderately hydrating, and the texture isn’t too thin or too thick, lightweight, and comfortable to wear.

This is one of Chanel's better Glossimers in the past six month! It has a great balance between glossiness, shimmer, and color. It's hard to find this particular shade of orange without strong red undertones.

Chanel Sirocco Glossimer
Chanel Sirocco Glossimer

Chanel Sirocco Glossimer

Chanel Sirocco Glossimer ($29.50 for 0.19 oz.) might look like a soft peachy gold in the tube, but it’s virtually colorless on the lips. The base is mostly clear on my lips with a fine dusting of pale peach shimmer–it’s very subtle, barely-there shimmer. From afar, it looks like I’m wearing clear gloss or some shiny lip balm. The dupes are endless! Any gloss that has a tiny bit of shimmer but is otherwise clear will do.

Chanel’s signature gloss formula is supposed to deliver shimmer and “high-shine glow” with shades that range from “sheer and natural” to “sparkling and rich.” The formula is supposed to be both comfortable and long-wearing. Though it can be hard to make the distinction, there is a line between sheer and clear. If you want a comfortable, hydrating product that doesn’t have any color, I think you ought to opt for lip balm, which will do a better job at moisturizing your lips.  This is just too close to clear to be “sheer and natural” to me.  Maybe if there was more shimmer or even the slightest tint to the base color it would reach a level of sheer that makes sense.

I totally get the appeal of Glossimers; they can be really dazzling and sparkling, nearly breathtaking in the sunlight, but this lacks the shimmer that gives that effect.  I’m a fan of the formula, generally speaking, but some of the more recent releases have been disappointing.  Sirocco lasts about two and a half hours before the shine is gone, and since there really isn’t any color, the rest of it appears to be gone, too.  The texture is thin without being too thin, comfortable, non-sticky, and keeps lips feeling good while its on.

The lightweight, non-sticky, and comfortable texture is the gloss's saving grace [from an F rating]. While it feels lovely on, it's virtually colorless and has so little shimmer that it ends up looking like clear gloss or balm once applied.

Chanel Chelsea Glossimer
Chanel Chelsea Glossimer

Chanel Chelsea Glossimer

Chanel Chelsea Glossimer ($28.50 for 0.19 oz.) is described as a “brilliant pink lipgloss [that] delivers the ultimate pop of colour, along with subtle shimmer and a high-shine glow.” I have no idea what Chanel was seeing, because this gloss is nearly colorless when applied. At best, and I feel like I’m being generous, it emphasizes the natural pinkness of your lip color, but the reality is it looks like clear gloss with a shiny finish. The shimmer is not just subtle but barely there; there were maybe four or five flecks on my lips when I applied the gloss.

Chanel says that this “striking hue is named for a thriving artistic and cultural area of London.” It’s very, very striking in the tube, but that is where it ends. The whole concept reminded me of Gloss Fluo de Chanel from 2010, where the tubes were vibrant and neon, but the product itself was very sheer.  It feels like a Glossimer:  smooth, non-sticky, comfortable.  It’s thick without being heavy; glides on without slipping around.  The wear is about an hour and a half when I tested this shade.  If Chanel wanted to indicate this was sheer, perhaps “brilliant pink,” “ultimate pop of color,” and “striking hue” were not the best descriptions. I felt a bit duped myself after I purchased this and then swatched it.

If Chanel wanted to indicate this was sheer, perhaps "brilliant pink," "ultimate pop of color," and "striking hue" were not the best descriptions. If you love the Glossimer formula and want something that really has little to no color and little to no shimmer, you'll like this.
