Top 10 of 2012: Eyeshadows

These are my top ten powder eyeshadows (I say that, because there were a few cream eyeshadows I thought about including, but there were so many powder ones I wanted to include, too!). I’m not going to do a breakout for cream eyeshadows specifically, but know that Milani’s Shadow Eyez and Maybelline Color Tattoos would be taking honors on that list! There were numerous L’Oreal Infallible and Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense shades to choose from, too, so I went with my personal shade favorites.

• OCC Overlook — plum
• Bobbi Brown Slate — matte taupe
• L’Oreal Golden Emerald — shimmering olive green
• Illamasqua Burst — matte blue-teal
• MAC Modern Pewter — dirty gold
• Burberry Pale Barley — warm medium-dark brown
• Chanel Complice — shimmering beige
• Milani Shocking Pink — matte fuchsia pink
• Giorgio Armani #24 — dirty olive-gold-brown

What was your favorite single eyeshadow from 2012?

Chanel Complice Ombre Essentielle / Soft Touch Eyeshadow ($28.50 for 0.05 oz.) is described as a “soft peach.” It’s a soft, delicate peach with a subtle hint of pink. The finish is highly frosted, borderline metallic. MAC Fusion Gold is slightly darker. theBalm Stubborn is very similar but less shimmery. MAC Nubile is a little lighter. MAC Orb is similar but has a nearly matte finish. Urban Decay Scratch is barely pinker and has more of a sheen. theBalm Luscious Lani is more metallic and peachy.

This kind of shade usually receives two types of responses:  ”This is my holy grail everyday shade!” and “This is SO dupeable, who would ever pay that much for it?”  Complice is a dupeable shade to say the least! There were numerous dupes (mentioned above) that were very, very close.  I think what will set it apart for those who typically purchase high-end is the texture.  Chanel’s Soft Touch Eyeshadows are exactly that: soft to the touch; insanely finely-milled to the point that they almost feel like a cream, because they’re so soft and buttery. They tend to melt against the skin once applied.  It is a great everyday shade, because it brightens and wakes up the most tired eyes with its slightly warm, shimmery look.

When I wore Complice for wear, it wore for a full eight hours without creasing, whether over a primer or on bare lids. The color payoff was a little sheer when I swatched it initially, but it was mostly opaque on the lid when I applied it with a brush. It definitely looked best when applied over a primer, though.

P.S. — I hope to review the other shades from the fall collection, but my order from Nordstrom’s is still in transit so sit tight.
