Challenge: Felines — Phuong K, Mariah, Alicia, Resha, Kali

Here are the final five looks from this month’s challenge!  It’s been a really fun ride to see all of the different looks inspired by felines.  Big thanks to everyone who took the time to participate–it wouldn’t have been as awesome without you!  I won’t make an official announcement until mid-October, but October’s challenge will be Halloween-related.  Again, more on that challenge in a couple of weeks.

PHUONG K is a full-time student who loves to blog about makeup in her spare time.

INSPIRATION: “Very sultry, cat-like eyes was the main focus. I tried to combine the typical cat-eye makeup used daily with a little extra outlining for emphasis.” — Phuong K

Mariah

MARIAH is an animator living in Portland, Oregon who loves makeup like crazy! She recently graduated with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, and it’s good to know it can be put to use with makeup as well as animating! Not makeup related, but you can see her work here.

INSPIRATION: “My look was totally inspired by my cat, Puff! She IS a Russian Blue, so how could I use any other color? She’s fun and cute, but smoky and soft. I tried to convey that using soft grey/blues that were dramatic and fun! She seemed to approve too!” — Mariah

Alicia

ALICIA is a twenty-eight year old Canadian who’s determined to become a makeup artist. She would also love to work as a beauty journalist or in beauty product development. She started her blog to share her journey!

INSPIRATION: “The inspiration for this look were leopard prints. I didn’t want to cover the entire face in spots, so I decided to keep the look more wearable and keep the spots to the eye area. I wanted the face to be heavily contoured making it more animal like. Overall the look is fierce and dangerous just like a leopard.” — Alicia

RESHA is a thirty-year-old self-confessed nerd and beauty blogger from Virginia, who has a serious addiction to lip products. She also has a spoiled Yorkie named Ruben and workas as a web and graphic designer.

INSPIRATION: “I figured everyone else would do something dramatic, so I wanted to do something simple and easy.” — Resha

KALI is a beauty blogger obsessed with everything beauty, fashion, and crafting. She loves lounging around on lazy afternoons, eating comfort foods, and being around loved ones.

INSPIRATION: “I usually run away from bold looks but I definitely was inspired by the the “fierceness” of last month’s felines. While checking out the Fabulous Felines collection at MAC, I was mainly drawn to the Leopard Luxe because of the gorgeous golds and yellows. I tired thinking of another great color to pair with gold and I automatically though of dark royal blues -which ended up looking almost black. I wanted to play down the rest of my face so I chose a light, peachy orange for the cheeks and a beige nude for my lips.” — Kali

CORINNE is a thirty-two USAF Veteran that works in IT and is currently working on getting her blog going.

INSPIRATION: “I was inspired to use our two cats for this look; Gypsie, a tortoise shell, mostly black with a “salt and peppering” of orange and white gold and Smoke, a Russian Blue, all grey with a very faint deeper grey tiger stripe. I wanted this look to showcase not only their unique coloring but also their bold independence and spirit. Their mystery and magic but also their protectiveness and territorial nature.” — Corinne

ASHLEY is a huge fan of makeup, and ever since she moved to Calgary, she’s had way more temptation from the high-end department stores!

INSPIRATION: “More or less a wild cat hunting. As a liner lover it was more or less a given with the feline theme but I love the intensity in the wild cat’s eyes, beautiful, and took notes from the white lining the black, as well as a strong cheek-bone structure.” — Ashley

Jimena

JIMENA is nineteen years old and from Monterrey, Mexico. She’s been loving makeup since she was sixteen! You can find her on YouTube.

INSPIRATION: “For this look I wanted to make like a cat eye shape with the black eyeshadow and use the liners too, so it wasn’t completely black and also because I like how the liners colors look with black.” — Jimena

INSPIRATION: “I always wanted to do a more extreme take on the traditional cat eye…really exaggerate it. This was perfect to test it out. I used some tiger colors with the extreme cat eye.” — Dana

INSPIRATION: “For this look, I wanted a simple background (my face) with a bold, pop of color (lips). The inspiration for this look came from a cat I once owned when I lived with my parents–the entire cat had white fur, but it had a black mouth and black paws that stood out.” — Henry

INSPIRATION: “My inspiration is my cat, she is pictured in two of these shots together with me, I just love her so much and find her so beautiful and inspiring. I took most of the inspiration from her colouring and I was very happy to be able to also include a hot fall trend, the dark lips. I tried to make the inspiration for my look obvious, but to still make it wearable and pretty.” — Ina

I’ve seen a few tutorials on youtube for doing leopard print on the eyelids but since I’m Asian and rocking the monolid, that doesn’t really work for me. INSPIRATION: “Little secret.. I’m super allergic to cats ! I was inspired to do this look by the Russian Blue, just googled cat breeds and as soon as I saw it I immediately thought ‘Knight Divine’! I never really wear grays so thought it was the perfect opportunity to play around. Ended up with a strong smoky eye and neutral everything else. I used some white and silvery highlight colours as the Russian Blue comes from a cold climate. And yeah! I think I might actually wear this look out tonight.. I’m surprised how much I like it.” — Jo

INSPIRATION: “My inspiration for the look was a character from True Blood: Lorena. Her character has a lot of rage and passion and her overall character is very powerful.” — Luna

ROSA is a student in the Bay Area who loves art, makeup, and music. She enjoys reading Grimm fairtyales and has her own blog.

INSPIRATION: “My inspiration was my little tuxedo cat Zorro. She is black and white with big gold eyes.” — Rosa

EYES: She used Urban Decay Primer Potion (all over lid), MAC Black cream color base (on lid and blended out), Concealer (on inner corners and brow bone), MAC Carbon (over Black CCB), MAC Modest Tone (over the concealer and blended into Carbon), Knight Divine (in the crease and blended into Carbon and Modest Tone), TKB Jade Green (lightly dusted over inner part of Carbon), TKB Hilite Gold (with mixing medium in the center of the lid and lightly blended out), TKB Pearl White (over Modest tone in inner lid), and Vanilla pigment (over Modest tone on the brow bone).

LIPS: She wore Lancome Metallique lipstick and Oyster Girl lipgloss.

FACE: She used Smashbox PhotoFinish Foundation, MAC Ambering Rose blush (on the apples and blended up), and MAC Stereo Rose Mineralize Skinfinish (over Ambering Rose).

It was such a pleasure to see all of the different looks and takes on the feline theme of this month’s challenge!  We have subtle and natural to bolder and more dramatic in these first looks.  As always, I post in the order that entries are received.  I will be posting one or two sets per day ’til we’ve showcased all challenge-takers (which is around 30 lovelies!).

Emily

EMILY is sixteen, and she first started to fall in love with makeup after watching YouTube videos for a few years. She hopes to take cosmetology classes and maybe open a YouTube account in the future.

INSPIRATION: “My inspiration was my favorite wild cat, the Tiger. I thought the colors would make a very nice, wearable but fun look.” — Emily

EYES: She primed her eyes with Urban Decay Primer Potion, and then layered Revlon Skinlights #908 Illuminance Cream Shadow all over the lid. She applied a light orange shade from Coastal Scents’ 88 Matte Palette on the inner third of the eye with a medium orange over the rest of the eye. She mixed bright orange and light brown for the outer corner and crease. She used Pur Minerals Spiced Mocha Eyeshadow to line the upper lash line with Urban Decay Whiskey 24/7 Liner on the upper waterline. She used Bare Minerals Flawless Lash Mascara on lashes.

LIPS: She applied Avon Nude Gold Glazewear Lipstick on lips.

FACE: She wore BareMinerals Fair Foundation with Too Faced Snow Bunny Bronzer applied to hollow of cheeks and Bare Minerals A Little Sun All Over Face Color on cheeks. She used Urban Decay Virgin Eyeshadow to highlight cheekbones.

Aracely

ARACELY is twenty-four years old and absolutely in love with makeup. For her, makeup is not only an expression of beauty but an expression of artistic quality.

INSPIRATION: “My feline inspired makeup was inspired by my cat Pushie. Pushie is a very cat, he was a stray I adopted. But also being loving, he has sass so to I wanted to create a look that conveyed those two strong qualities that he has.” — Aracely

EYES: She applied Urban Decay Sin Primer Potion all over the lid and a thin line underneath the lower lash line. Then, she tightlined using Elizabeth Arden’s Smoky Black Eye Pencil and drew outward. She used Lancome’s Lezard Eyeshadow on the outer third of the lid and into crease. On the lower lid, she drew a thin line using Lancome’s Positive Eyeshadow and on the inner corner of the eye. She used Clinique’s High Length Mascara on lashes.

FACE: She wore Lancome Shimmer Mocha Havana Blush Subtil on cheeks.

Elli

ELLI loves makeup and the art of it. She has a makeup and fashion blog where she shares tips and knowledge about makeup.

INSPIRATION: “My inspiration was just taking what I saw in the collection (Bermese) and converting that into something I would wear. The colors and feel for my look were obviously, felines. But I also saw mysteriousness and sultry in the MAC line.” — Elli

FACE: She wore Laura Mercier Foundation Primer as a base, with HERA Foundation on top. She set with MAC Medium Dark Mineralize Skinfinish and blushed cheeks with MAC Sunbasque Blush.

El

EL is a mom of four who lives in Hawaii. She says her kids are her life, but she works as a freelance makeup. She also volunteers for a few non-profit organizations. You can find her over on YouTube!

INSPIRATION: “The inspiration was Beyonce’s Kitty Kat music video. I basically tried to recreaet the look that she had for this entire video.” — El

EYES: She started with Urban Decay Sin Primer Potion as an eyeshadow base, and then applied Urban Decay Oraculum Eyeshadow all over the lid. She made the spots using MAC Rich Ground Fluidline and Arbonne Black Liquid Liner. She dotted the center of each spot with a touch of Oraculum. She lined the upper and lower waterlines with MAC Smolder Eye Kohl, upper lash line with Blacktrack, and lower lash line smudged with MAC Carbon Eyeshadow.

INSPIRATION: “The inspiration for the look I came up with was a taken from the coat of a Leopard. I choose to do a mostly neutral eye with a pop of gold in the crease. I used eyeliner to create the best cat eye I could do. I wanted my look to be almost wearable. The special touch I added was a leopard print above the crease.” — Jessica

Etaoin

ETAOIN is twenty-four years and just completed her Masters in Accounting. She’ll be starting work in the big, bad world come October, so she’s enjoying her free time until then by hanging out with friends and family and watching Mad Men and Breaking Bad.

INSPIRATION: “I wanted a look that would be wearable with a theatrical edge. The colours in the eye makeup are safari inspired – gold and green – which were extended outwards to give a feline shaped eye. The leopard print spots on the cheeks and earthy tones in the lips and blush complete the look.” — Etaoin

LIPS: She wore MAC Crosswires Lipstick.

FACE: She used DiorSkin #010 Nude with Chanel Reflex Joue Contraste on cheeks.

Challenge: Feline-Inspired Makeup

Last month’s “No Makeup” Makeup Challenge worked out really well and readers seemed interest in making it a regular part of Temptalia.  This month, the challenge is to create a look that’s feline-inspired–whether that’s a look that simply takes colors from your favorite feline, incorporating patterns, or getting inspiration from words associated with felines (e.g. strong, powerful, independent).   It can be a look you’d wear to the office or an elaborate mask–whatever your interpretation of the challenge is what I want to see.

I’d love to see and share your feline-inspired look with Temptalia readers! The deadline to submit your look is September 15th, 2010, so be sure to send me:

• at least two (2) high quality images (at least 600px wide, no phone camera pics (!), color accurate, no watermarks)
• a breakdown of what you used
• a brief description of what the inspiration was for your look
• a brief bio about yourself (2-3 sentences), include any website/blog link as necessary
