Burberry Bright Poppy (311) Lip Velvet
Burberry Bright Poppy (311) Lip Velvet

Burberry Bright Poppy (311) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a deepened, bold berry-red with a matte finish. MAC Heaux is similar, slightly brighter. Guerlain Liu is redder. MAC Rebel is slightly more berry-hued. MAC Lush Life is lighter. Guerlain Lou-Ling is slightly lighter. Burberry Bright Plum is a bit darker and redder. See comparison swatches.

It has semi-opaque color, but there’s a sheerness to it that you can tell by how my lip freckle comes through. The consistency is lightly creamy, so the lipstick applied evenly and smoothly without dragging along the lips, but it’s not too thick or heavy, and it doesn’t bleed or feather. It lasted for nearly seven hours and left a light stain behind, and it felt moderately hydrating while worn and for a couple of hours after it wore away. The finish on this isn’t quite as immaculate as other Lip Velvets, though, even if the lipstick is still quite good–it is inevitably not quite as impressive!

Burberry Rose Pink (307) Lip Velvet
Burberry Rose Pink (307) Lip Velvet

Burberry Rose Pink (307) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a slightly warm, deep pink with a matte finish. Tom Ford Indian Rose is much lighter. MAC Speak Louder is cooler-toned. MAC Plumful is less pigmented, cooler. Guerlain Grenade is warmer. Chanel Taffeta Rose is brighter. Bobbi Brown Wild Rose is cooler. See comparison swatches.

It had rich, opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly and smoothly without pulling or tugging at the lip. The consistency is just creamy enough to glide on but not slide around the lip, so it stays in place well and lasted me six and a half hours when I wore it. If you love matte finishes for your lipsticks but find a lot of formulas drying or unforgiving, Burberry’s Lip Velvet is one of the better ones I’ve come across. It’s really comfortable to wear and doesn’t dehydrate my lips.

Burberry Peony Rose (302) Lip Velvet
Burberry Peony Rose (302) Lip Velvet

Burberry Peony Rose (302) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a softened, rosy pink with a matte finish and warm undertones. NARS Tolede is warmer. Tom Ford Indian Rose is pinker. Revlon Pink Truffle is glossier and slightly darker. Bobbi Brown Nude Rose is darker. NARS Montego Bay is very similar but a touch pinker.

Burberry’s Lip Velvet is one of my favorite matte lipstick formulas, because it’s rich in color payoff, long-wearing, and comfortable to wear. The consistency is creamy enough that it glides on easily without tugging or pulling on the lip, but it stays put and doesn’t slide around. This also helps it stay on better and for longer–Peony Rose lasted nearly six hours on me and was somewhat hydrating while worn. It doesn’t feel heavy or thick, but it has full color coverage.

Burberry Pink Apricot Lip Velvet
Burberry Antique Pink (303) Lip Velvet

Burberry Antique Pink (303) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a pinky-brown with hints of beige. It’s a fairly neutral color, but if I had to pick, I’d say it leans warmer rather than cool, but I think it is rather neutral overall. Urban Decay Naked has a soft pink iridescence and is rosier overall. MAC Impressive is slightly darker and pinker. Bobbi Brown Heather Pink is a touch pinker. Guerlain Avarice is brighter, pinker. MAC Spice is very comparable. Bobbi Brown Uber Nude is browner–lacks the rosiness of this shade.

The formula is just creamy enough to enable a great glide-on consistency that deposits even, opaque color without pulling or tugging at the lip. Because it’s not too creamy, it doesn’t move around or feather, and it feels lightweight on. It was comfortable to wear and lightly hydrating over the five and a half hours it wore for. It comes in a square, matte-finish tube with a magnetic enclosure and has a sweet, fruity scent but no taste.

Burberry Pink Apricot Lip Velvet
Burberry Pink Amber (306) Lip Velvet

Burberry Pink Amber (306) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a medium-dark, pink-coral with brightness that’s vibrant without being neon or too intimidating. It has warm undertones, but it doesn’t turn orange. Chanel Enjouee is pinker. Guerlain Gracy is brighter, pinker. Guerlain Chamade is a smidgen pinker, and it has a glossier finish (it looks a bit different on). Guerlain Bal de Mai has gold shimmer. Chanel Flamboyante is redder. Burberry Blush is more muted, less vibrant, and pinker.

The new Lip Velvet formula is touted as long-wearing, having a velvet-matte finish, comfortable to wear, and providing hydration while worn.  It’s one of the most comfortable matte formulas I’ve come across.  Pink Amber wore for six and a half hours, and it was comfortable the entire time and never left my lips feeling dry.  There’s a perfect amount of glide in the consistency; it has a good base that it glides on lips and deposits an even amount of color without pulling or tugging.  It doesn’t feel thick or heavy on, so it doesn’t move around easily, but it doesn’t feel like it’s clinging on, either.  It has a sweet, fruity scent but no taste.

Burberry Pink Apricot Lip Velvet
Burberry Pink Apricot (301) Lip Velvet

Burberry Pink Apricot (301) Lip Velvet ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is peachy coral with the barest pink tinge. The finish is a satiny-matte–a matte with a soft, natural sheen. MAC Jazzed has a higher sheen, less pink. MAC In a Heartbeat is very comparable in color but it has a glossier finish. MAC Reel Sexy is pinker, coral. YSL Peach Passion has more of a sheen.

Burberry’s new Lip Velvet formula is supposed to be long-wearing and have a velvet-matte finish, while feeling both comfortable and hydrating to wear. The color is described as “dense and luminous.” The packaging has a matte finish instead of the glossy cases of the brand’s regular lipstick range. It has a magnetic enclosure and comes in a square tube.  It has a sweet, almost fruity, scent but no discernible taste.

It’s creamy, glides on easily, and feels like it has a fair amount of silicone in it (it just has that smooth glide of silicone).  Pink Apricot goes on with full color coverage and wore well for six and a half hours.  During and post-wear, it was not drying.  It was lightly hydrating overall, and I don’t need to reach for lip balm after wearing this for eight hours.  Despite its creaminess, it’s lightweight and has a thin consistency–not thick or movable really.  There’s a very subtle cling but not the kind that you really feel, just the kind where you know your lipstick won’t be migrating everywhere.
