Benefit Icebreaker Ultra Plush Lipgloss ($16.00 for 0.50 fl oz.) is described as “clear,” and it is exactly that. There is no color or shimmer, just glossiness and shine once applied. It’s lightly hydrating, comfortable to wear, non-sticky, and glides on with a gel-like consistency. It has a sweet, fruity scent with a healthy shine that lasts about an hour and a half on me.  If you’re going for a clear gloss, the one thing I like to look out for are the larger-sized tubes of them, like this one, but it ultimately depends on how and how often you’re planning to use it.  I wish Icebreaker lasted longer, though.

Benefit Poutrageous Ultra Plush Lipgloss ($16.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “bright pink coral.” It’s a brightened, orange coral with a very subtle shimmer. On lips, it adds warmth and shine, but it’s a sheerer gloss so there’s little visible color, even on my less pigmented lips. Le Metier de Beaute Orange Juiced is similar when worn, though it has more shimmer. Bobbi Brown Citrus is very similar as well.  (Even with these two, both are sheer formulas, but you can see a greater difference in the actual color of my bare lips compared to my lips with the respective gloss on.)

Again, with a gloss this sheer, I think it’s important that it be clear that it is not the “bright pink coral” you see in the tube but a “sheer bright pink coral.” It’s definitely crossing the line between sheer and clear. Even as far as adding warmth goes, it’s rather subtle. Benefit should reconsider the way it describes the coverage of their new gloss range, because I can read it as a mix of sheer/less sheer, but they also make references to “drenching lips in luscious color … [f]rom crystal clear to hot pink.” To that end, I’m expecting sheer to semi-sheer coverage but not near clear with any of the shades except Icebreaker (which is clear). (The press release was actually more vague.)

The consistency is smooth, gel-like, and glides on easily.  It has a fair amount of slip, and it’s a comfortable gloss to wear.  The “color” of this goes on evenly and you can press your lips together and never worry about it creating lines.  It also doesn’t settle into lip lines.  The formula is lightly hydrating, but it wears away within an hour and a half.

Benefit Lollibop Ultra Plush Lipgloss ($16.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “hot pink.” Squeezed from the tube, it’s a creamy, medium-dark pink with cool undertones. On lips, it’s a barely-there wash of pink; it brightens my natural lip color while amplifying any pink tones to it, but it doesn’t dramatically alter the color. Urban Decay Flushed is slightly more pigmented and more neutral. Guerlain Cherry Pink is slightly pinker and has sparkle. Chanel Pink Pulsion is cooler-toned, more fuchsia. Dolce & Gabbana Candy is comparable–slightly more milky-looking in appearance.

I think this gloss really pushes the boundaries of “sheer” and still describing it as “hot pink.” Benefit says, “from crystal clear to hot pink,” as if the range offers a variety of color/coverages–and this is just so barely-there. It would be clearer and better for customers to see this described as a “sheer hot pink.” I don’t have pigmented lips naturally, but the effect of this gloss is my-lips-but-better balm. Because the formula is only lightly hydrating, this wouldn’t be my first choice for something with such a subtle effect.

I like the consistency of the Ultra Plush formula, because it is not too thin or too thick and feels like a gel-balm hybrid.  It’s slick, lightweight, and comfortable to wear.  It’s moderately glossy, but the glossiness tends to fade within an hour down to a more natural sheen.  The whole product, though, disappears in record time: two hours at the very most, but it tends to wear between an hour and an hour and a half.

Benefit Fauxmance Ultra Plush Lipgloss ($16.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “soft berry.” It squeezes out and looks like a coral rose with soft white shimmer, and then applied, it’s a light coral-pink with a glossy, reflective sheen. MAC Persistent Peach is a touch lighter and has a creamier consistency. Chanel Mystery is very close in color but glossier. MAC Strange Potion is darker, more coral. Dior Pink Veil is pinker.

Fauxmance has a gel-like consistency that feels comfortable on the lips, glides on easily, and has a lot of slip, but it doesn’t feel thick or heavy when worn.  The color coverage of this particular shade is semi-sheer to semi-opaque with some translucency that allows the natural lip color to come through.  What I liked was that this didn’t turn out to be too creamy or milky, so it doesn’t settle into lip lines noticeably nor have problems where pressing your lips would cause lines to show up.  The lipgloss has a sweet, fruity scent but no real taste to me.  The biggest downside, though, is this slips into oblivion within two hours, which is really short wear compared to the average lipgloss (in my experience).

Benefit Kiss You Ultra Plush Lipgloss ($16.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “clear fuchsia.” It looks like a creamy, magenta fuchsia when squeezed out of the tube, but on lips, it’s definitely more of a sheer fuchsia pink with blue undertones. Bobbi Brown Electric Violet is shimmery and more fuchsia. Urban Decay Crush is similar in color but more opaque (so it appears bolder/brighter). Korres Crocus is purpler.

It has semi-sheer color coverage; enough color that it tints the natural lip color to a brighter pink, but it looks and acts more as a stain or veil of color. In that respect, it looks mostly even once applied and doesn’t settle into lip lines. It has a not too thick, not too thin consistency (about medium) that feels very gel-like. There’s a lot of slip, but it doesn’t feel heavy, though as a result, it doesn’t have great staying power–with Kiss You, it lasts around two hours. It is somewhat hydrating but won’t replace a good lip balm. It has a sweet, fruity scent and comes in a squeeze-tube with a slanted tip applicator.

	The real downside to Benefit's Ultra Gloss formula seems to be that they just don't stay on lips for long, so you're regularly reapplying (good thing these come with 0.50 fl. oz.--quite a bit more than most glosses).

Benefit A-Lister Ultra Plush Lipgloss ($16.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “bubblegum pink.” It’s a pale, milky pink-beige with white shimmer. MAC Warm Embrace is pinker and darker. Chanel Allegorie is less shimmery and sheerer. Urban Decay Obsessed is much pinker. Chanel Caprice is darker and pinker.

The texture is very gel-like; thicker than some glosses but not in a heavy, goopy way, but in a creamy, gel kind of way. It’s non-sticky from the get-go and stays that way throughout the wear. With A-Lister, the wear wasn’t too impressive–a mere two and a half hours. You can definitely move it around on the lips, which is likely why it doesn’t hold on as long as some other glosses do. For as milky as the color is, it didn’t settle too noticeably into lip lines and yielded rather even coverage overall. It was semi-opaque in color; enough that it substantially altered my natural lip color but still allowed it to come through. The formula was lightly hydrating–no replacement for a true lip balm but a great daytime alternative that gives some color.

The gloss also has a sweet, fruity scent–I did notice a bit initially after applying, and I’m not particularly sensitive to scents, so if you aren’t a fan of that type of scent, you might want to sniff it in store, first.  It comes in a squeeze-tube with a slanted-tip applicator.
