NYFW S/S ’10: Avon @ Charlotte Ronson

Avon @ Charlotte Ronson

Avon Advance Techniques lead stylists Allen Ruiz together with designer, Charlotte Ronson, created the hair look for the Spring 2010 show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

The Look

Inspiration for the Look: The look mirrors the Charlotte Ronson collection, which is inspired by a remake of 80’s style. The hair was created to evoke a fresh, young wispy look and a “just walked out of dance class at Julliard” look to play off her fabrics and bold designs.

Get the Look

  • Step 1: Prep the hair from root to tip with Advance Techniques Salon Volume Finishing Spray to enhance natural shine and create volume.
  • Step 2: Using the Advance Techniques Paddle Brush and hair dryer, distribute the Advance Techniques Salon Volume Finishing Spray by sectioning off the hair and blow-drying to ensure that there is a natural, soft texture.
  • Step 3: Next, gather the hair tight to form a ponytail at the back crown of the head and secure with a ponytail holder keeping all sides flat.
  • Step 4: Holding hair at the base of the ponytail, twist the hair firmly in one direction to form a kink in to a spiral. Secure with bobby pins.
  • Step 5: On the sides, using the little hairs “muse” the wispy hairs to play up the natural texture.
  • Step 6: Lightly spray Advance Techniques Hair Spray to complete the style and hold in place.

The Look

M∙A∙C Senior Artist, Chantel Miller designed the Maori-inspired geometric tattoo makeup seen on the runways at the Rodarte Spring/Summer 2010 runway show today. Chantel worked in close collaboration with designers Kate and Laura Mulleavy and key makeup artist James Kaliardos (for M∙A∙C) over the course of 4 weeks to create the full-sleeve, half-sleeve and neck tattoo designs, which are meant to evoke the feeling of a futuristic tribe.

“The idea for the tattoos stemmed from Kate and Laura’s desire to celebrate makeup as art not only for the face, but also for the body in a similar way that Indian culture uses henna. They want women to look at makeup as an accessory for an outfit the way you would a bracelet or a necklace,” said Chantel Miller.

The morning of the show, Chantel, who specializes in body painting, spent 4 intensive hours with a team of 40 artists hand painting the elaborate body art. Each model received a customized combination of the designs depending on which look they were wearing in the show. There were; 4 different full-sleeve, 1 neck and 8 half-sleeve designs. To get the look Chantel recommends trying a combination of the below products. She says, “Application is key to creating a body-art look like this, so the brushes play an essential part.”

  • PRO Micronized Airbrush in Black Black
  • Brush 252
  • Brush 242
  • PRO Mixing Medium/Alcohol Base
  • Liquidlast Liner in Point Black

The Look

The look is edgy and daring, yet natural, with hair pinned away from the face in a thin veil of black wool. Hair is matte, roughed-up and textured, and raked back into a braid-like cascade.

Get the Look

  • Step 1: Dampen hair with water and prep with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add volume. Scrunch hair with fingers while blow-drying.
  • Step 2: Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion generously on hair (using most of the bottle), working in layers, to create matte, roughed-up texture throughout. Massage product into the hair and scalp with fingers.
  • Step 3: Once Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion is worked in, scrunch and twist hair with fingers while blowing-drying. Spray hair liberally with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for workable hold.
  • Step 4: Twist the sides of hair back and secure at ear-level with black hair pins.
  • Step 5: Prepare a piece of natural black wool by spreading it out with fingers to create a thin veil. Beginning across the top of the head, a couple of inches from the hairline, spread the wool out delicately, pinning it securely in place. Continue draping the organic wool over hair to ends, securing in place with pins.
  • Step 6: Twirl the wool around the ends and tie into a knot, creating the illusion of the end of a ponytail. Spray thoroughly with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray to hold the look in place.

The Look

This is a low, sleek ponytail adorned with a textured bouquet of waves; a play of smooth versus rough. Hair is sleek and groomed on each side of the head and through the ponytail, with a slightly rough, matte finish on top and elegant, textured waves pinned above the pony. The finished look is chic and contemporary with a bit of attitude.

Get the Look

  • Step 1: Create a deep side part. Draw a horseshoe-shaped section of hair along the top of the head, from each brow-line. Isolate this section of hair and pin in place with a single-pronged hair clip.
  • Step 2: Pull the bottom half of hair into a ponytail and secure with a bungee elastic. Divide ponytail into sections with fingers and spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for workable hold.
  • Step 3: Use a flat iron to straighten the ponytail section by section, creating a smooth, sleek finish.
  • Step 4: Unclip the top section of hair and comb it back and over the ponytail. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion and massage into hair to create volume and matte, rough texture.
  • Step 5: Working with the same top section, divide hair into smaller pieces and spray with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray. Wrap each piece of hair around a ceramic Curl Rod, creating spirals, until the entire top section of hair has been curled.
  • Step 6: Brush through spirals, loosening curls into soft waves. Loosely backcomb waves to create fullness, volume and texture, and shorten the length of hair.
  • Step 7: Pin the sides and ends of wavy hair against the head, close to the base of the ponytail. Hair is sculpted into a voluminous, undulating chignon adorning the ponytail.
  • Step 8: Work Aveda Light Elements™ Texturizing Creme into palms. Smooth hair along the sides of the head and above the ears to create a sleekness and shine.
  • Step 9: Finish the look with Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for shine and hold.
