AVEDA @ Christian Siriano S/S 2011

The new bun at Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2011 Show with Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

On Hair:

Aveda lead stylist Antoinette Beenders created a textured bun using Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray at the Christian Siriano Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week show in New York.

INSPIRATION: “The Christian Siriano hair look for this season is all about different cultures mixing and blending together. The style is a modern bun—full of attitude—with sections of crimped hair cascading over it for texture. It’s a strong, contemporary twist on the classic bun.” — Antoinette Beenders for Aveda

Hair How-to:

1. Brush hair with a Mason Pearson brush. Pull the top section of hair — from the hairline to the crown — and clip it out of the way.

2. Comb the remaining hair back into a tight, high ponytail and secure with a bungee elastic. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for hold.

3. Spray Aveda Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine directly onto the bristles of a kabuki-style Aveda Uruku Bronzing Brush. “Paint” the sides of hair with the Uruku Bronzing Brush for shine.

4. Take the ponytail and braid it. Then twist the braid into a bun, securing to the head with bobby pins. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray for ultra-strong hold.

5. Remove the clip from the remaining top section of hair and comb to the crown. Working with small portions of hair (approximately one inch) at a time, use a micro-crimping iron to add texture from the crown to ends.

6. Brush the hair with a Mason Pearson brush to loosen the crimp. Gently pull the hair over the bun and secure at the base with hair pins. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.

7. Pull a few pieces of hair out of the bun with fingers for extra texture. Set the look with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.

See quick Q&A and makeup how-to, plus more images!

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

ANTOINETTE BEENDERS: Christian’s collection is inspired by world-travel and includes lots of Asian and African inspired prints as well as intricate beading. We wanted to create a look that evoked the elements of his collection, so we created a modern, textured bun. It’s a chic-yet-rough, spontaneous look that pairs perfectly with Christian’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

ANTOINETTE BEENDERS: This look is surprisingly easy to recreate. Pin the top section of hair up with a large clip so sides and back are free. Next, create a high ponytail with the rest of hair and spritz with Aveda Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine. Secure tightly with an elastic and twist into a bun, fastening with bobby pins. Take the clipped section of hair on top and crimp the ends, in small sections, with a micro-crimping iron. Pull crimped hair over the bun and secure at the base with hair pins. Hold the look in place with Aveda Control Force™ Firm Hold Hair Spray.”

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO: My collection this season is elegant and opulent, and the clothing has African, Indian, and Asian influences. My muse for Spring/Summer 2011 is a sophisticated yet vibrant woman. We are showcasing a breadth of silhouettes: flowing, wide-legged trousers, safari shorts and jackets, kimono sleeves, structured cocktail dresses, and light, fluttering evening gowns. Our prints were inspired by digital photographs of both Chinese temples and Indian beading. The patterns captivate the eye and compliment the deep red, khaki, and saturated paprika tones of the clothes. The collection is about feeling glamorous in what you wear, whether it’s simple or lavish, and mixing both of those styles together.

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?

CHRISTIAN SIRIANO: I try to preserve the Earth’s natural resources and my carbon footprint in any way I can. It’s vital to preserve the world we live in, and it feels great to be able to make a positive impact during Fashion Week. One of the best things about working with Aveda is being able to “go green” in such a fabulous way!

AVEDA @ ORGANIC by John Patrick S/S 2011

Wilted waves and naturally luminous makeup at ORGANIC by John Patrick Spring/Summer 2011 Presentation with Jenn Chiminiello and Janell Geason for Aveda.

On Hair:

Aveda lead stylist Jenn Chiminiello created “wilted waves” using Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion and Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray at the ORGANIC by John Patrick Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week presentation in New York.

INSPIRATION: “The undone, wavy look is sexy and unrestrained, inspired by a girl’s hair after she’s been in the water. It’s very soft and flowing with lots of texture to give it a natural messiness. It’s loose, second-day hair—like it was curled the day before and then left alone. Our collection this season is based around water. I love that the hair look evokes the salty, windblown feel of hair that’s dried after being in the ocean. The style definitely has some 1970’s, Charlie’s Angels inspiration but the finished look is completely fresh.” — John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

How-to:

1. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ for sleek smoothness and to prevent frizz. Use a fine-tooth comb to create a strong part of the left side of the head.

2. Scrunch Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam into damp hair and massage into roots for volume and shine. Blow hair dry with a large ceramic round brush, curling ends under.

3. Pin top section of hair up with a large clip so sides are free for curling. Use a large-barrel curling iron on one-inch sections of hair at a time, working from the bottom up.

4. Remove pin from top section and curl as done on the sides.

5. Sprinkle Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion from roots to ends and rake hands through hair to create texture and loose roughness to waves.

6. Finish with a mist of Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray for light hold and pull ends forward to rest on shoulders.

See quick Q&A and makeup how-to, plus more images!

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

JENN CHIMINIELLO: John Patrick explained his drive and focus while creating this collection. He was inspired by water, movement, fluidity, and flow. I wanted to take the hair in a similar direction: long, wavy, and natural, with a bit of texture and looseness.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

JENN CHIMINIELLO: This loose, natural look is easy to recreate and works for both day and evening. Prep damp hair with Aveda Smooth Infusion™ Style-Prep Smoother™ to prevent flyaways and Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam for volume and texture. Create a strong side part and blow hair dry with a round brush for extra volume and shine. Use a one-inch curling iron to create waves, working in sections from bottom to top. To make the style look natural, sprinkle with Aveda Pure Abundance™ Hair Potion and rake hands through hair to loosen waves. Finish with a light mist of Aveda Air Control™ Hair Spray.

On Makeup

Janell Geason, Global Educator for Aveda Makeup, created a naturally luminous look using Aveda Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in Gobi Sands, Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Sheer Mineral Lip Color in Sheer Roseleaf, and Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15 at the ORGANIC by John Patrick Spring/Summer 2011 Fashion Week presentation in New York.

Complexion

1. Prep skin with Aveda Enbrightenment™ Brightening Correcting Creme for luminosity.

2. Using the Aveda Inner Light™ Foundation Brush, apply Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15 and Aveda Inner Light™ Concealer to even skin tone. Create a semi-matte finish with Inner Light™ Mineral Loose Powder in Translucent.

3. Use the Aveda Inner Light™ Foundation Brush to apply a small amount of Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Dual Foundation to the contours of cheeks, choosing a foundation two shades deeper than natural skin tone.

Eyes

1. Prep eyelids with Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Tinted Moisture SPF 15. Highlight the center of the lid with the Aveda Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in Copper Haze—using the middle (contour) color of the palette to create a taupe-y, smoky look.

2. Define the contour of the eye with Aveda Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in Gobi Sands, using the middle color of the palette.

3. Swipe the center shade of the Gobi Sands Eye Color Trio from the inside corners of each eyelid to the outside corners, on both top and bottom lash lines.

4. Define the eyes with the Aveda Petal Essence™ Eye Definer in Cacao on the top and bottom lash lines. Smudge color and encircle the eyes with Aveda Flax Sticks™ Eye Smudger Brush (#5).

5. Brush eyebrows into place and softly define them with the Aveda Flax Sticks Brow & Lash Brush (#7). Define brows with the Gobi Sands Eye Color Trio.

6. Curl lashes and apply two coats of Aveda Mosscara™ in Black Forest to top and bottom.

7. For a wet finished look, use finger to dab a drop of Aveda All-Sensitive™ Body Formula on both tops and bottoms of the eyelid.

Lips

1. Prime lips with Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Renewing Lip Treatment. Apply Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Sheer Mineral Lip Color in Sheer Roseleaf and press into lips with a sponge to intensify natural color.

2. Apply a small amount of Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Rehydrating Lip Glaze in Raspberry Tea to the pout of the lips to create a more worn-in, hours-later look.

Q&A with Janell Geason, Global Education, AVEDA Makeup:

Q: What was your inspiration for this look?

JANELL GEASON: John Patrick spoke about water as a theme. We decided that the hair was going to look loose and wavy, and be done, but not too done. I wanted the makeup to look effortlessly chic, like a girl spent the day at the beach and was going out. It’s a soft, daytime look with lots of glow and sheen. The skin is luminous and eyes feature natural, taupe-y browns. I chose sophisticated, organic shades to enhance the healthy, natural colors found in the skin, especially during the summer. The shades of taupe are 1970’s influenced and give off a brown smokiness. The makeup look needed to have lightness in both attitude and application for a soft, sultry, smooth feel. It’s polished but doesn’t look like the girl tried too hard.

Q: How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?

JANELL GEASON: John Patrick and I spoke about the elements of his collection, the woman who wears his clothes, and how his clothes tell us something about her. He has a keen sense of this woman, she is very chic and modern, but has a classic, nostalgic warmth to her. I chose colors and textures that this woman would wear as an accessory.

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?

JANELL GEASON: This look is very attainable and wearable. Use the Aveda Petal Essence™ Eye Color Trio in ‘Twilight’ to bring out the natural shape of the eye and enhance skin tone. Cheeks should be lightly flushed with the Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Dual Foundation in a shade that’s two levels darker than the natural skin tone. To keep the look sophisticated, make sure that skin is polished with a semi-matte finish using the Aveda Inner Light™ Tinted Moisture SPF 15 and the Aveda Inner Light™ Mineral Loose Powder. Stain lips with the Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Smoothing Lip Color in ‘Sheer Roseleaf’ and a small amount of Aveda Nourish-Mint™ Rehydrating Lip Glaze in ‘Raspberry Tea’ on the pout.

Q&A with John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick:

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?

JOHN PATRICK: The inspiration for my collection this season is water. Every manifestation of water—from floods to falls to lack thereof. I want to inspire a reverence for water, a resource that affects us constantly, everyday. This collection reflects the evolution of the 21st Century silhouette: modernity, function, and beauty.

Q: You work hard to reduce the environmental impact of your presentation each season with Aveda’s Green Backstage program by replacing bottled water with NYC tap water, eliminating the use of fur, serving organic/locally sourced food, and printing invitations on recycled paper. What does your accomplishment mean to you? How do you feel about the end results?

JOHN PATRICK: I feel a sense of needing to do more to protect the environment. It’s incredibly important to tread lightly on the Earth, and there’s always room for improvement. We are thrilled to be working with Aveda, both for their passion for hair and for sustainability. In fact, Aveda CatWalks for Water inspired us to focus this season’s collection around the significance of water.

Aveda @ ORGANIC by John Patrick

Aveda lead stylist Odile Gilbert created a modern twist on the Brigitte Bardot “pouf” using Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray (which launches this June) at the ORGANIC by John Patrick Fall/Winter 2010 Fashion Week show in New York.

“Our collection this season is centered around big, beautiful hair that makes our hand-woven tweeds look happy. Despite some inspiration from Joni Mitchell, Lady Diana, and Brigitte Bardot, the hair look is modern—very young and fun, not polished or structured.” — John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

Hair How-to

1. Brush through hair and prep with Aveda Phomollient™ Styling Foam to add body and shine. Use a comb to create a left side part.

2. Divide hair into four sections: sides, back, and top. Fold the top section over the face and clip back to separate.

3. Backcomb the back section of hair with a brush to create messy volume. Spray liberally with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray for maximum hold.

4. Create an anchor by crossing bobby pins horizontally across the middle of the back section of hair, just below the crown of the head.

5. Using large hair pins, attach a hairdresser’s sponge at the crown, where bobby pins are anchored.

6. Cross the right section of backcombed hair over to the left, pinning over the hairdresser’s sponge with large hair pins. Repeat with the left section of backcombed hair, bringing it to right. Take all remaining hair in the back section and twirl to the left to create a French twist. Secure the twist at the nape of the neck with hair pins, creating a tail of loose hair draped over the shoulder.

7. Set aside a portion of hair to fall in front of the left ear, and brush remaining top section of hair over the hairdresser’s sponge, Pin it into the French twist to create a “pouf.” Pull lightly with fingers to create loose, spontaneous volume. Spray with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

8. Leave wisps of free falling hair in front of the left ear, and loosely pin remaining pieces above the right ear. Finish with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.

Check out a Q&A, plus more photos!

Q: What was your inspiration for this look? How did you collaborate with the designer to create the look?
A: “John Patrick and I were inspired by the idea of a young, teenage girl seeing a gorgeous, Brigitte Bardot-esque hair look in a magazine or on TV and trying it on themselves. It’s very spontaneous, cute, and modern. The look involves a messy pouf tamed by Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray and a French twist in the back. The volume is impulsive and a little undone.” —Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: How could a woman achieve this look on her own?
A. “This look is especially beautiful for evening. Tease hair with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray and place a hairdresser’s sponge on the crown of the head. Twist the sides of hair over the sponge from left to right, then pull the top section of hair over before securing with hair pins. Bring a piece of hair in front across the face and pin it in place, finishing with Aveda Control Force™ Hair Spray.”— Odile Gilbert for Aveda

Q: What is the inspiration for your collection? What is the look you are capturing?
A: “The inspiration for my collection this season is a hybrid between Joni Mitchell and Lady Diana Spencer, with a special focus on hand-woven Scottish tweeds.” — John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

Q: You have made a real effort to “green” your show this season. How do you feel about this accomplishment?
A: “Being sustainable and ethical is not a trend for ORGANIC— it has been the focus of our brand since it’s founding, an inherent part of our DNA that is taken very seriously. We are thrilled to be a part of Aveda’s Clean Water initiative this season—Aveda is an amazing brand that is wholeheartedly committed to the environment, and we are proud to be partnering.” — John Patrick of ORGANIC by John Patrick

NARS @ 3.1 Phillip Lim

The theme behind the collection was collage, with inspiration springing from the late works of Picasso and the Cubism period. The pieces look different from every angle leaving a sense of mystery to them, while remaining timeless. The same idea is applied to the makeup. An abundance of different textures- matte, sheer, shimmer and shine- were portrayed differently as the model moved around. The clothes, like the makeup, were meant to stimulate the senses, be emotional, and also to sympathize with current times.

The Look

The look is clean and textural, giving a sense that makeup is there but not detectable from the plain eye. “The idea is not to be harsh. The look is part sheer with shades of green, brown and lilac fading into each other” said lead artist Lisa Butler. The key points include highlights of iridescence and gold to the cheekbones, light liner (almost invisible) and peach lips. “There is some shimmer so when the face moves around, the light really captures it. But there are no lines- no eye lines, no lip lines.”

Get the Look

Face: Mix a small amount of NARS Concealer with NARS Hydrating Moisture Cream to apply just around the nose forehead and cheeks. Blend NARS Luxor Multiple (NEW for Holiday 2009) with a foundation brush to the cheekbone moving down diagonally toward the lips and adding a little bit onto the lips for subtle highlights

Eyes: Apply the golden moss side of NARS Camargue Duo Eyeshadow (NEW for Spring 2010) all over the eye filling in the crease with the sienna side. Depending on skin tone, apply NARS Mousson Cream Eyesahdow (NEW for Holiday 2009) to adjust the color on the lid. Using a NARS Smudge Brush apply D.Gorgeous Eyeshadow (NEW for Spring 2010) to the lower lash line adding intensity as need be (“It’s not a heavy liner, but it shows some color,” explained Lisa Butler). Apply one coat of NARS Larger Than Life Lengthening Mascara to the top lashes

Lips: Add a swipe of NARS Cruising Lipstick (NEW for Spring 2010) and some NARS Luxor Multiple (NEW for Holiday 2009) to a NARS Retractable Lip Brush and dab lightly onto the lips starting in the middle and working your way out

Finish: Apply NARS Orgasm Illuminator (NEW for Spring 2010) to the face, concentrating on the cheekbones. Reapply both shades from NARS Camargue Duo Eyeshadow to the brow bones

NARS @ Marchesa

The inspiration behind the collection came from Madame Butterfly. “I wanted to capture the real look of Japan, create layers and bits of origami,” said designer Georgina Chapman. The whimsical creations based in sculpted layers balanced the soft, bare faces that were accentuated with long lashes.

The Look

Very simple, romantic and beautiful skin contoured with varying formulas. “We contoured the skin with matte and shimmery textures and added feathers to the eyes to provide dimension to the face,” explained lead artist Talia Shobrook. A matte face was illuminated with a bit of shimmer. Feather lashes, custom created by NARS from the feathers on the Marchesa dresses, gave excitement to an otherwise simple look.

Get the Look

Face: Mix NARS Sheer Matte Foundation with NARS Orgasm Illuminator (NEW for Spring 2010) and gently blend all over the face. Apply NARS Concealer under the eyes and only where redness shows. Using fingers, apply NARS Luxor Multiple (NEW for Holiday 2009) across the cheekbone. Apply NARS Powder Foundation under the eyes and to the center of forehead. With a NARS Yachiyo Kabuki Artisan Brush contour the cheeks with NARS Nepal Single Eyeshadow. Apply a mixture of both shadows from NARS Thebes Cream Duo Eyeshadow on the cheekbones, bridge of nose and on the upper temples.

Eyes: Apply NARS Abyssinia Single Eyeshadow all over the eye up to the brow. Line the top lashline, as well as the lower lash line, with NARS Iceberg Eyeliner Pencil. Curl lashes with a NARS Eyelash Curler. Apply one light coat of NARS Larger Than Life Volumizing Mascara on the top lashes, only. Using clear eyelash glue, apply NARS custom-made feather lashes

Lips: Apply NARS Cruising Lipstick (NEW for Spring 2010) with fingers to the lips

Clé de Peau Beauté @ Vera Wang

For her Spring 2010 collection, Vera Wang found inspiration in Paul Poiret, the French designer some say was the first to “drape” his designs, a new approach that signaled a departure from rigid tailoring. With this in mind, Lucia Pieroni, Color Creator for Clé de Peau Beauté, created her own new approach, developing a boy-like, simple face for each model, that worked perfectly with the clothing and bold jewelry.

The Look

“I wanted the models to appear cool and very natural, so I created a super sheer base on the face with eye accents only, of taupe and silver.” Lucia says. “I wanted them to look healthy, but a bit supernatural.” — Lucia Pieroni

Get the Look

Beginning with the NEW! Luminizing Enhancer Base ($42,) Lucia created a luminous complexion and evened out skin tone, prior to applying the Refining Fluid Foundation ($118) to provide an even, flawless and radiant finish on skin.

Next, Lucia accented, and extended, the brows utilizing Eyebrow Pencil in #104/Grey ($55) to give a fuller, still polished effect.

To brighten eyes, she used NEW! Satin Eye Color in #11/silver ($45,) with a touch of shade #111/taupe to add definition at the outer corners.

Additionally, Lucia decided to forego the mascara and eyeliner, but utilize Satin Eye Color #104/golden to highlight the browbone and the top of the cheek to add an ethereal glow.

Lastly, lips were colored to understated perfection, complementing the face without drawing attention. Lucia used NEW! Extra Rich Lipstick in T4 ($65,) a nude shade inspired by tea roses.
