Makeup Breakdown

My inspiration is always a combination of the girl, the dress, the occasion and our feeling the day of the event. Since the gown is a pale slate, I wanted Amy’s face to have subtle color. I thought a palette of plums, taupes and pinks would be perfect for her. This is no specific look, just a stunning overall appearance with focus on her eyes.– Makeup Artist Stephen Sollitto

70th Annual Golden Globes: Amy Adams

Amy Adams arrives at at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 13th, 2013.

Makeup

Makeup Artist Stephen Sollitto created a stunning look for Amy Adams, star of “The Master,” who was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture. The look perfectly complemented her “ballet pink” Marchesa gown.

FACE: Sollitto prepped Adams’ skin using RèVive Moisture Serum Extreme ($350) to ensure the star’s skin remain moisturized throughout the red carpet and award show. Next, he applied Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 – Oil Free ($43) to give the skin a sheer hint of colour. To complete her flawless face and create a natural-looking glow, he applied Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour in Canyon ($24) to Amy’s cheek bones, followed by Laura Mercier Crème Cheek Colour in Oleander ($24) to the apples of her cheeks.

EYES: Sollitto applied Laura Mercier Secret Concealer ($22) around Adams’ eye area to conceal imperfections. Next, he applied Laura Mercier Sateen Eye Colour in Sandstone ($22) to add a hint of natural colour. He then applied Laura Mercier Sequin Eye Colour in Twinkling Star ($22) to create depth and definition. Next, he blended Laura Mercier Sateen Eye Colour in Sable ($22) onto the top of her lids and under her bottom lashes. Sollitto lined Adams’ eyes using Dior Style Liner ($34) and applied Dior DiorShow Backstage Makeup Mascara ($25) to elongate her lashes.

LIPS: Sollitto applied Laura Mercier Crème Smooth Lip Colour in Plum Orchid ($26) to the star’s lips, and then completed the look by applying Laura Mercier Lip Glacè in Raspberry ($24).

Hair

Her hair look, created by Laini Reeves for Moroccanoil, combined Old Hollywood and Deco references in a unique, loose and modern way.

“It was such a special gown, so form fitting, off the shoulder with a beautiful flow of fabric, that I definitely wanted to accent that glamorous nuance. The head-turning style featured a new take on the classic marcel wave, with a small, loose, twisted bun placed on the side of the nape behind the waved detail. The bun was tied tight and low, and held in place with small golden bobby pins. I wanted to create a sense of freedom to the look so the hair didn’t look like a set. Hair on top was flatter to the forehead, with the waved detail starting 3 inches from the root. I really liked the way it fell, and kept the entire look soft. The style had to emphasize shine to reflect the light, and define the detail in a silky looking way. This allowed a lighter, messier look without appearing disheveled.”

How Laini Reeves for Moroccanoil created the look: ”We first shampooed the hair with Moroccanoil Extra Volume Shampoo and Moroccanoil Extra Volume Conditioner to give shiny volume without any weight. After making a side part and brushing the hair into place, I then rough dried it using my fingers. I placed a clip in the spot where I wanted the wave to start. Next, I lightly misted Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray from root to end for a light, luminous shine that would reflect the detail of the style. Then I used a large crimping iron to form the wave, taking 2” vertical sections, starting at a face-flattering point alongside the corner of the eyebrow. I sprayed the rest of the hair again with Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine Spray, brushed it through with a soft bristle brush, then pulled it to the lower right side of the nape. After making a ponytail (held with a hair band), I twisted the hair around my fingers and rolled it into a little bun supported with gold bobby pins.

To finish, I sprayed the look with Moroccanoil Luminious Hairspray for natural-looking hold with shine.”

Amy Adams @ MET Ball 2011

Amy Adams had her makeup done by celebrity makeup artist Stephen Solitto, who said, “Tonight’s inspiration for the Met Ball was Amy’s sophisticated L’Wren Scott dress. It was this beautiful mauve with an intricate black pattern. As soon as I saw the picture of the dress, I knew I would do a muted smoky eye with the CHANEL Eyeshadow Duo in Misty-Soft. It was a perfect color match.”

Makeup How-to

To start the process, I primed Amy’s face with CHANEL Sublimage Essential Regenerating Fluid. This moisturizer is so luxurious; it really feels likes it’s working on your skin to get it in the best condition before the big night.

Amy has beautiful skin, but for the red carpet it needs to be perfection. CHANEL Vitalumière Aqua Ultra-Light Skin Perfecting Makeup SPF 15 in Beige – Pastel is how I achieved that with her. It gives flawlessly light coverage so your skin looks its best. Healthy, but not too shiny.

I love doing Amy’s eyes because they are so perfectly shaped and as soon as you put anything on them they pop. To make them stand out tonight I lined her upper lids with CHANEL Long-Lasting Eyeliner in Cassis. To be dramatic and get swept up in the glamour of the Met Ball, I dragged this line way out past the lashes as well. Next, I swept the deeper purple shade in the CHANEL Eyeshadow Duo in Misty-Soft over the Cassis to blend and soften from lash line all the way to brow. I also took the brush and applied this shade to her lower lash line connecting this to the upsweep on her lids. To pop the eyes from underneath, I used CHANEL Cassis again on her lower lash line and to make sure the color match wasn’t too precious I dusted the outer upper and lower corners of her eye with the darker grey shade in the CHANEL Eyeshadow Duo in Gris-Subtil. I topped off her look with Inimitable Intense Mascara in Noir on both the upper and lower lashes.

On Amy’s cheeks, I used CHANEL Powder Blush in Rose Dust as it gave her the perfect flush she needed. To pull her whole look together, I applied CHANEL Rouge Coco Shine Hydrating Sheer Lipshine in Bel-Ami. This lip is strong, but wearable and a perfect balance to her smoky eye. To add a final touch, I applied CHANEL Nail Colour in Black Satin to her hands, and when she left for the Met Ball she looked like the movie star she is.

Hair Breakdown

Abergel applied Fekkai Coiff™ Contrôle Ironless Straightening Balm from the roots to the end of the hair and sprayed Fekkai Coiff™ Bouffant Lifting & Texturizing Spray Gel at the hair line to achieve the sleek ‘do. Next, he blow dried the hair straight with a round brush. With a straightening iron, he sealed the ends to achieve the flat style. He then pulled the hair into a high ponytail. A great tip for this is to follow the cheek bone line all the way up, and then place the base of the ponytail at that point. He secured the hair with an elastic band, for an added dimension. Finally for added shine, he finished the look by spraying Fekkai Advanced Brilliant Glossing Sheer Shine Mist.
