Skintone/coloring: very pale, dark brown hair and eyes. Definitely cool-toned!
Where do I apply my makeup: Usually my bedroom (but the lighting is a bit too warm), or the bathroom, where the lighting is more neutral.
Lighting: I prefer the neutral lighting in my bathroom. Sometimes I don’t even need to turn on the light in there and I can just use the natural light through the window.
What would I change: I wish the lighting in my bedroom were neutral. I also have a very disorganized stash – makeup and brushes scattered throughout the house, that sort of thing. How does that even happen??

Your skin tone/coloring: NC 37/42Where do you apply your makeup? In my bedroom, by a windowWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? I use the sunlight that comes through the windowWhat would you change about your makeup set-up?  I’d love a place where I can sit and have everything accessible.  Right now, my make up is in a couple different places, as there’s no where to put it by the window.

    • GUSnail Do you have to stand now?  Sometimes I wish I could sit!

      • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Dee GUSnail

Christine-Temptalia Yes, I have a plastic mirror (works well, actually) that I prop on the windowsill.  Then I have to kind of hunch over it to see and get the right light.  I typically put on my makeup with my glasses off so I have to get really close to the mirror.  It’s the best spot in the house, lighting-wise, but I can’t put a seat or anything there because it’s right by the door to my husband’s closet :)

Skin tone/ Coloring: Light warm toned skin/ Green eyes. Naturally blonde, currently plum colored hair.Where do you apply your makeup: Currently in my bathroom. What lighting do you use: Bathroom mirror lights, and natural light from the window. What would I change about my set up?: Everything. XD I’m working on making a reserved makeup space in my closet, its so annoying hauling makeup in and out of the bathroom.

  4. Your skin tone/coloring:Olive Fair (to pale for MAC)Where do you apply your makeup: On my bed lol What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with: the sun, I sit next to my small window. What would you change about your makeup set-up: a proper vanity would be nice but that that require a larger apartment. Currently keeping my makeup mostly on top of my one vertical dresser.

Skin tone/coloring: Fair-Light (fighting sudden onset melasma right now)Where do you apply your makeup: In master bedroom at an antique desk that sits under a large window. I have a lighted mirror w/1x and 10x sides.Lighting type: Usually natural unless I’m getting ready at 0-Dark-Thirty. Then I use the lighting from my lighted mirror. What would you change about your makeup set-up? I would take over our guest bedroom and turn it into a beauty studio with professional lighting and a makeup table/mirror setup like Pursebuzz has, but it’s loaded with 300+ euro boardgames and my husband’s MIDI equipment. I’ll have to wait until my son moves out so I can take over the 3rd bedroom.

    • divinem1  Hope you get well!

      • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Melissa divinem (Melissa)

Thanks, Christine. I look absolutely CRAZY without foundation right now — like brown blush gone way wrong on NW25 skin! Ugh!

    • divinem1  I so love your idea!!!  and I eventually will have my dream make-up room too :)  Your remark about lighting type made me laugh.  I remember trying to apply some business type makeup at 4:00 in the morning so I could scream to the airport and catch the early flight to NYC and be delivering a presentation by 9:00 a.m.  Trouble with this..lighting!!  A couple of times I would arrive at the airport and walk into the bathroom to see I had done a pretty lousy job and had feverish cheeks from hell!!  LoL

      • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Melissa divinem (Melissa)

My lighted mirror, while wonderfully convenient for checking for flaws with my eyeshadow placement/brows, etc., fails miserably with its lighting. It’s just not enough in a dark room at 4:30am.

It’s horrible to finish a business meeting followed by a trip to the restroom and the horror of discovering I’ve made some major makeup mistake like forgetting to blend something out, cos no one is going to tell you to your face you look like a clown! UGH!

  6. Annette

Your skin tone/coloring: PaleWhere do you apply your makeup? At my vanity table What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Daylight or very strong lightbulbWhat would you change about your makeup set-up? More space! Always :)

  7. nacacijin

Your skin tone/coloring: Light/Medium OliveWhere do you apply your makeup?  At my bedroom desk in front of the window (with a tiny little handheld mirror) if it’s super sunny outside, but most of the time in my bathroom with the big mirror. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?  Either minute sunlight, if I can do it in my room, or the overhead/mirror light in the bathroom (a 6-bulb bar light that sits over top of the mirror, so it’s quite bright). What would you change about your makeup set-up? Everything. It gets incredibly hot in my bathroom and there are no windows, so I typically hate doing makeup in there. But my bedroom faces–of all freaking directions–NORTH so I very rarely have sufficient natural light for my bedroom to work. I need a better mirror, good lighting and better storage for my makeup, but that will definitely have to wait until I get my apartment. My bedroom right now just isn’t good for any type of setup.

    • nacacijin Do you prefer a handheld mirror or a larger mirror?

      • nacacijin

Christine-Temptalia I actually quite like the handheld mirror when I’m in my bedroom. It’s amazing when I’m doing detail work on the lips or eyes (especially eyeliner!). But it’s difficult to maneuver having only one hand to work with while the other is holding the mirror. I definitely prefer a larger mirror on an everyday basis.

Your skin tone/coloring: NW15Where do you apply your makeup? Bed room at my vanityWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Lighted MU MirrorWhat would you change about your makeup set-up? BIGGER & more storage

  9. Nicola

Your skin tone/coloring: Very fairWhere do you apply your makeup? I have a makeup desk in my bedroomWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Sadly I have no choice but to use a desk lamp and the lighting in my bedroom. I have very small windows. What would you change about your makeup set-up? The lighting! I wish there was brighter and more natural lighting in my room that makes it hard to see sometimes.

  10. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Amy xamyx

If I plan to be indoors all day, with artificial light, then I’ll just do my makeup in the bathroom mirror. There are no windows, and the light is fairly bright, but even. If it’s an outdoor activity, I typically use a tinted moisturizer with a high SPF, sometimes over another sunscreen, followed by mineralized powder, with SPF (I’m quite light, from the Irish side, yet I tan instantly, from the Greek side), so I don’t really have a need for special lighting. The same really goes for evening, as well, but I’ll sometimes do it in my bedroom, where the light isn’t as strong. I’m moving this weekend, so I’m sure this will all change; for one, I’ll have less counter space in the bathroom. I may just invest in a vanity, or large desk and mirror. The biggest problem I have (and it’s always been the issue), is I never have enough storage space…

    • xamyx is there ever enough storage space?  I bought one of those plastic thingees with multiple pull out trays to fit in my walk in closet so I could free up some space in my bathroom.  The problem with this..I’m too bloody lazy to walk from my bathroom to my walk-in and once I move something there, it never gets used.  So I nixed that idea and purged a pile of cosmetics.  Now I’ve got so little room in my bathroom space because I have bins ..  ugh!

  11. Kinakins

Your skin tone/coloring: Fair, NC 10-15Where do you apply your makeup? My bedroom, at the desk in front of my window. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? The lights in my room + the light from my window. What would you change about your makeup set-up? The lights in my room make everything look yellow/orange and just bad. :(

Your skin tone/coloring: Pink-toned fairWhere do you apply your makeup? Desk right behind my window in my bedroomWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Sunlight in daytime, mirror light at nightWhat would you change about your makeup set-up? i’d make it less crowded

Skintone/coloring: Light or light medium, neutral/cool, Bobbi Brown SandWhere do I apply my makeup?: In the bathroom- I don’t have access to any windows! :(What kind of lighting do I use?: Ugly flourescent (I think) yellow lighting in the bathroom. What would I change: Ideally, I’d like a vanity mirror in front of a bay window facing east, so I’ll always have daylight.

  14. Dinitchka

Your skin tone/coloring: MAC Matchmaster 1, NARS Siberia and Maybelline Fit Me 110. I’m fair with a neautral undertone.
Where do you apply your makeup? Bathroom but I do not keep my make-up in there.
What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? The lighting in the bathroom. I know I’m not supposed to but it works best for me.
What would you change about your makeup set-up? Currently all my make-up is set up in the spare bedroom (aka extra big fat closet). I am working on a vanity for that room but at the moment it is just not coming to fruition. My biggest bugger is sink placement and what kind of sink to put in there.

  15. Vanillasnow

Skintone & Colouring:  Light with strong yellow undertones and mild rosacea, NC20 more or less.Where do I apply you makeup?:  I set up a makeup desk in my bedroom where I’m surrounded by windows on three sides.  It’s both a blessing and a curse. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?:  Sunlight depending on the time of the day, but with additional warm coloured fluorescent room lighting and my lighted three-way makeup mirror (also fluorescent lights). What would you change about your makeup set-up?:  Need more storage space, the makeup collection is out of control!  Other than that, maybe just better organization and a cleaner work space.  Oh maybe a new comfy chair <3

  16. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Kafka Kafka

Your skin tone/coloring: Olive, light to medium, with yellow undertones. NARS Punjab, MAC NC 25-35 (depending on season) Right now, I think I’m probably an NC 32-35.Where do you apply your makeup? Bathroom & with a standing magnifying glass. Then, later, I double-check how it looks in a mirror that’s in more natural lighting. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? 6 overhead round vanity lights. What would you change about your makeup set-up? I need more storage space but I’ve already sacrificed the neatness of my tidy, sparse, white counters to those storage drawers for my more frequently-used makeup and have no more room. I think I need one of those tall, free-standing IKEA makeup cabinets/towers.

    • Kafka Oh man, I need my magnifying mirror too!  I can’t even see my stray eyebrows without it.

      • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Kafka Kafka

wwendalynne  It’s a godsend to me to check my eyeshadows, how blended the colours are, how evenly the concealer or foundation is applied, stray mascara flecks and things like that. My bathroom has a massive mirrow over the sink, so that’s great for the overall stuff but I need that magnifying mirror to put on my eyeshadows first and foremost! How something looks in the overall mirror or from far away is often not the case close-up! But, yes, it definitely is a lifesaver for eyebrow shaping and tweezing, though. No doubt!

  17. Your skin tone/coloring: light and warmWhere do you apply your makeup? in the bathroomWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? natural light, if possible. I usually do my makeup in front of the bathroom window. What would you change about your makeup set-up? better artificial light, so I can do my makeup at night and still see what I’m doing! I would also love to be able to sit. My grandma had an amazing vanity, I wish I had enough space to fit something like that somewhere!

  18. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Lulu LuluEttmayr

Skintone & Colouring: Very fair, with neutral, slightly cool leaning undertones, I am between N3 and NW15Where I apply my makkeup?: I have a special table in my room with plenty of natural light coming from my roof window. What I would change? More storage :)

  19. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Anisa LOLARIS

Skintone/Colouring: Most of the time NC30. Right now almost NC35. Strong golden undertones. Already too light for Tarte TM Agent 010, still fit better to NARS TM Alaska, Lucy Minerals mix of Creamy Bisque – Golden Medium, with the latter being 75%.Where do you apply your makeup?: In my bedroomWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?: Natural lighting, sometimes with the the help of warm light bulb, if the natural light is too cool, and at night-time.What would you change about your makeup set-up?: More steady natural lighting here in NL. It’s either too gloomy or too bright!

  20. Safyre

Your skin tone/coloring: NW 20, fair/pink-tonedWhere do you apply your makeup? In my bedroom, usually my bed b/c it gets better lighting; sometimes at my brother’s desk if there’s enough light, it faces away from the windows though so it’s a big pain in the arseWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Preferably sunlight, but if it’s dark out with a regular bulb light (I think? xD) light, considering most places I go have the same lighting (the regular plain light bulb variety) it pretty much works out best. :PWhat would you change about your makeup set-up? I wish I had a legitimate vanity to store my makeup and do my makeup at that faces a good light source (i.e. windows) instead of splaying everything out on my bed. Alas, one day..

  21. Caitlin

Skintone & Colouring: Medium with light yellow undertones, light rosacea on cheeks and near the nose.  NC25 typically.Where do you apply your makeup?  My make-up vanity! What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? 8 fluorescent bulbs, 4 on each side of my mirror.  Think retro make-up vanities! What would you change about your make-up set up? Need more natural sunlight!  It’s very hard to gauge how natural or how blended my makeup looks because it looks flawless due to the light.  Other than that, can’t complain. Keep up the amazing work!

  22. loli_ninja

Skin tone and coloring: I’m very pale and have a strange undertone. It makes finding foundation incredible hard. For example the closest thing I’ve tried is revlon color stay liquid in the lightest cool shade and it’s still not quite right. Where do you apply your makeup: I have this lovely built in desk/counter/shelving unit in my room. But I think I’m changing that soon the lighting just isn’t very good. What kind of lighting do you use: I have a florescent light above the desk portion of the counter. Not the best way to apply makeup so I always double check in sunlight. What would you change about your makeup set-up: I’d change the lighting. I’d love to set up in front of the windows and get a more even light.

  23. GlamorPuss

Your skin tone/coloring:  fair, with yellow and pink undertones, NC15Where do you apply your makeup?  In my bathroom (artificial light) or in the mirror in the hallway (natural light for day makeup)What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Both artificial and natural.  I find my makeup looks so much better if I check it in the sun before I go out.  What would you change about your makeup set-up?  I wish I had more room, more natural light and a place to sit!

  24. Skintone & Colouring:  Normally very fair and almost neutral (slightly cool-toned)- Mac NC15/ Nars Mont Blanc or Siberia; Currently sporting my deep, dark summer tan, which makes me closer to NC/NW20 or around Nars Deauville.Where
do I apply you makeup?:Usually in my bedroom, at my vanity, where the makeup is stored, sometimes in the bathroom, because the natural light is better. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?: Natural if possible. If it’s evening, I’ll use whatever light is available, which is usually an overhead. What would you change about your makeup set-up? Almost everything. It seems that the natural light always favours one side or the other. Overhead lights cast strange shadows. I don’t have that many options in our current place, unfortunately.

  25. ivyeducator1908

Your skin tone/coloring: Medium/Dark…MAC NC44 and NC45 in the summer.Where do you apply your makeup? My bathroomWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? I use the bathroom lighting too, 8 bulbs and the overhead light!!!What would you change about your makeup set-up? My bathroom is hot too, and hubby always get in my way so I need a vanity in my room, but I never want to spend the money…even though I have wasted space in my bedroom corner!

  26. ZulaikhaMuddassir

Skintone – nc40Where do you apply your makeup? In my bedroom, standing over my dresser or 3 feet away where i have a full length mirror, it makes applying eyeliner so easy as i can be v close to the mirror. What kind of lighting- during daytime i open the curtains and let in the natural light, i have 4 French windows so alot of light comes in.nighttime i do my makeup,in the yellow lights v have in the room. The thing i would love to change is how i store my makeup Coz currently its all jammed in a 8*8 drawer, we are moving v soon and my new bedroom will have the dresser right next to the window and a full length mirror by its side too. the dresser is not the conventional dresser, my designer created this unique set up just for me. Next to the mirror there will be shelves and a top to keep my huge acrylic makeup organizer i bought, a perfume tray for my perfumes, and drawers below there top and drawers next to the top starting from the ground, about 7 drawers, so il store my accessories in it plus a little space for my hubby.

  27. KaseyCannuck

    I am a medium skintone.
During the week I apply my makeup at the gym after my morning workout.  Weekends of evenings its at home in the bathroom.
Lighting at the gym is awesome and bright.  I find its a good place to try new shades and color combos.  Lighting at home is crap.  Might as well do it by candlelight :(
I wouldn’t change a thing at the gym.  There are lots of mirrors for everyone to use, it’s perfect!!  At home, bathroom desperately needs a reno.  Old house, old wiring, 50-year-old light fixture painted onto the wall, its just tragic!!

  28. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of T Violet t_violet

Your skin tone/coloring: Very fair with slight yellow undertone. Where do you apply your makeup?  In the bathroom. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with?  I’ve got two overhead lights that I’ve got the GE Natural Light bulbs in.  There’s also a window so I get some diffused sunlight. What would you change about your makeup set-up?  Better lighting, some from the side instead of just the top.  Also, more counter space.  I’ve got two sinks but never use the second one, when I redo the bathroom, I’m gonna put in a single sink with a lot more counter.

  29. Sarah

Your skin tone/coloring: Fair/NeutralWhere do you apply your makeup? In my room and my vanity tableWhat kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? My makeup mirror has a built in mirror so I use thatWhat would you change about your makeup set-up? More natural, brighter lighting. My room has a giant window but because my wall colour is a dark grey, it doesn’t make a huge difference in terms of brightness. In addition to that, the ceiling light in my room isn’t very bright either- it’s more for decorative purposes. :D aha

Your skin tone/coloring: Fair, neutral (MAC NC15 is a very close match).Where do you apply your makeup? Usually in my bedroom, standing up in front of my closet mirror. Sometimes in the bathroom if my husband is still sleeping. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? Unless it’s a really early morning and the sun isn’t up yet, I’m using natural light. What would you change about your makeup set-up? EVERYTHING! Haha. My makeup set up is under the bed storage :(. I rotate what I own in a caboodle that I pull out each time I do my makeup. I really want a desk next to the window with a nice mirror, and storage for my makeup and brushes. I’ll get it one day.

Your skin tone/coloring: Light to Light-Medium. Golden/Olive. NC20-25 give or take in MAC jargon.Where do you apply your makeup? In my bedroom or living room. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? A mix of artificial and natural light, usually. What would you change about your makeup set-up? Everything. I really prefer to sit when I do my makeup, but I don’t have a lot of space. I’m either sitting on my bed trying to look into a mirror that’s several feet away from while using the mirrors on compacts for things that need a closer look OR I’m transporting my small makeup mirror to the living room to set on the coffee table then I sit on the floor and do my makeup in front of the big window. I need a desk/vanity with a good mirror, and a chair to sit in. I also could use better storage/organization.

  38. Skin tone/coloring?: Tanned with yellow tones, NC42. Where do you apply your makeup?: At my desk, in front of my laptop. What kind of lighting do you use?: Nothing special, just daylight aided by the regular ceiling light fixture. What would you change about your set-up?: I would love to have a real vanity someday. A pretty one, all for me. :)I grew up in a home with lots of relatives, so I could never have my own room or a vanity.

  39. Ana

    - medium warm undertones NC30-35- I apply my makeup in my bedroom- I use natural light or a big lamp I have- I’d make the room cooler cause it’s waaaay too hot

  40. Skin Tone:  Light medium neutral NC25 ishApply my makeup:  In my bathroomLighting:  Natural lighting facing me with artificial globe lights behind meChange:  Everything!!  I miss my old house :O)  I would love to have a full makeup vanity with built in makeup mirror and lights..the whole thing!!  Tons of storage..  My bathroom is rather small in this place although the lighting is good with plenty of natural light.  The storage is far too limited for my makeup collection and so everything is stored in stacked bins.  Now I kick myself for tossing the carboard boxes for some of my lippies..  They just store so much easier with the box *sigh*.. One day…

  41. P.S. to everyone with a hot room..  I hate putting makeup on and sweating, but it happens all the freaking time.  I have to turn on the damn air con!!!

  42. - neutral, I think n20ish, a little darker right now- i apply makeup in my bedroom, sitting at my vanity- there’s a big window right there, so natural light during the day, but an ordinary light at night; i’d love to have a good quality daylight-simulator bulb though- the stool/chair for my vanity is broken! i need to fix that :) also, i need somewhere to store my lesser-used makeup.

  43. NC20-25. For the face, in the  bathroom under the skylight. For other things, in my bedroom.Natural light for face. For other things, as long as there is light, I am not too picky.I need the mirror closer to me somehow. Can’t see very well!

  44. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Veronica Veronica

Skin tone:  Fair with cool undertones.
Where do you  apply the makeup/what lighting do you use?  Hah, this is a little embarassing to admit, but I spend so much time on the go during heavy work weeks that I wind up applying my makeup on the bus often.  Obviously, that’s done under natural lighting.  :P
When I actually have time to do it at home, it’s done in my bathroom with all of the lighting activated (a very bright, ambient set above the sink, and a more natural one in the area near the door).
What would you change about your setup?  I’d love to change the lights near the sink.  They tend to cast a yellowed tint over the area, so when I put on makeup, I generally have to stop every few steps and flick them off to make sure it’s all flowing together in natural lighting.

Skin tone: Fair/light with cool undertonesWhere do you apply makeup: I apply in the bathroom because we don’t have enough room for me to set up a make up station :(What kind of lighting: In the bathroom we have huge halogen lights as well above the mirror. Works great! What would I change? Just…not in the bathroom. I sometimes forget to take my brushes out and I feel like the steam from the shower is destroying them. Also it’s uncomfortable to stand and lean forward. I would rather sit down and take my time.

  47. * Your skin tone/coloring: Light-Medium to Medium, MAC N25-ish I think?* Where do you apply your makeup? Wherever I find good enough lighting and enough counterspace to.*What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? I live between countries at the moment, and that pretty much means having all my belongings in a suitcase while moving houses every few months. I have to adapt to whatever is available at the moment.* What would you change about your makeup set-up? Obviously I’d love to settle in one place and have everything organized and within my reach! Hopefully in a year or two. >.<

Your skin tone/coloring: Pale as frig. I’m like, the lightest shade in most foundations. And I have pinkish undertones, though that’s more  noticeable not on my face.Where do you apply your makeup? Standing up at the mirror on the back of my bedroom door, because it’s the only place I really have. I also wear glasses, so it’s hard to see and I can’t get close enough to the mirror if I’m doing my makeup over a counter. What kind of lighting do you apply makeup with? The crappy kind. Just the overhead light in my room, sometimes I use a small, bright lamp but it makes it hard to get the colors even on both eyes/cheeks because it’s to one side. What would you change about your makeup set-up? I’d like an actual vanity and a makeup mirror that lights up so I can actually see. Bahahah.

    Skin tone? Light with freckles

Apply makeup? Lighting? In front of my RIALTO makeup Mirror that sits on my bathroom counter, Its a big bathroom so I pulled a chair in there too. The makeup mirror lighting is PERFECTION. I could apply my makeup with only the light from this mirror and it looks perfect and accurate. I spent ALLOT of time searching for a mirror like that. The typical lighted mirrors like conair and others are terrible. Its worth the extra money for perfect lighting.

What would I change? More and better storage. I have a tall lingerie dresser and a Lori Grenier mirror cabinet in my bathroom but the setup is far from ideal, I just bought some Muji drawers that Im waiting for. Ugh I just want all my makeup in one place that is visible and organized! Im getting some great ideas from youtube and the comments here.
