Storage Solutions: Ikea Helmer

Date: Thursday, May 7th, 2009 Author:

Ikea’s Helmer ($39.99) is a drawer unit with casters. It has six pull-out drawers, and it is an easy and cost-efficient way to store the majority of your makeup and beauty essentials. I know that a lot of ladies love to store their nail polish in these as well. I prefer the silver color, though it does come in red and white, too. The only downside to the Helmer unit is that the drawers aren’t tall enough to store my body products. (Also, these are misleading in size — they look VERY tiny, but they will store a lot of your bobs and bits!)

That’s exactly what I use! It’s amazing. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. When we moved, I seriously contemplated ordering one from Ikea online (which costs like 300 bucks) because I didn’t want to wait until I could make a trek to the nearest store! I have the one in silver, and I mounted a stainless steel shelf above it. Add two lamps to that and you have the most awesome vanity of all time. In my bedroom. I am a genius.

i LOVE your storage solutions posts. i’m a grad student moving back into the dorms for the sake of convenience. i haven’t lived in a dorm since i was a freshman. i went to tour the residence hall where i’ll be living next year and my room’s going to be about the size of my current bedroom (if that!). LOL. i’ve been perusing the web for storage options because the sterilite plastic carts i currently use, while i love them dearly, aren’t very aesthetically appealing. this is exactly what i’ve been looking for!

I have one in red – I love it. I want another – actually if I had 3 I could probably get close to fitting my whole collection together!

i have one of these and they are great.
only problem is with mine that some of the drawers are somtimes tough to open, and occasionally make a really loud screeching sound!

It did feel a bit on the cheap side in terms of sturdiness/hardiness when I tried in-store, but I chalked it up to being a floor model! Though for $40, it’s still more than I’d expect, LOL.

Actually, I’ve never had an issue with mine, and I’ve owned two. That said, I am an Ikea-assembly genius, but still – maybe Carmen owns an older version? I bought my most recent one last fall (and its predecessor in 2007) and I was actually surprised at how nicely the drawers open. I guess it’s always hit or miss with Ikea shizz.

It definitely can be hit or miss at Ikea. I have a dresser that has ONLY imperfections (it’s tilted, it was missing parts, it had the wrong parts, etc.). Other stuff I have is great!
