The Sultry Season: Shiseido Natural Red (RD629) Lipstick

Shiseido Natural Red (RD629) Perfect Rouge Sheer Lip Color ($25.00 for 0.14 oz.) is a muted, played-down semi-sheer red with a glossy sheen–it almost looks like a gloss when applied, but it is most definitely a lipstick.  It’s moisturizing, and it’s very comfortable to wear, because it’s lightweight and creamy.  Shiseido’s lipsticks are scent- and taste-free, too.

Is this the right red for you? Would you wear it?

The Sultry Season is a series of posts featuring deep, rich shades of brown, berry, plum, and wine lipsticks and lipglosses — just right for autumn — that runs through October 2010.

  1. I was kind of uncertain about this, until I saw the swatch on your arm, which swayed me, and then the whole look and decided I actually like it very much.
I have noticed that I have often changed my mind about a lip colour after seeing the whole picture, so to speak.
And this one, I really do like! :)

I love that it’s semi sheer so you can control the opaqueness of the color!

this is so wearable. you are so lucky your lips are not very pigmented, the colours really show up true! my lips are very dark, only really bright pigmented lipsticks show up properly!

  4. Petra

Gorgeous shade! And what a texture!

wow this looks absolutely gorgeous!! am in the market for a sheer red lippie and this looks perfect on you!! i’ve been looking at the nars sheer lipsticks as well, how would you say this compares to dolce vita? i’ve got cool skin, so i’m looking for a red that isn’t going to look too orange :(

  6. Deb

Interesting! I’d have to try this before I made up my mind, I think. Might be a good way to pull off a red without needing a liner! Did you find that it bled at all?

  7. Tiffany

What a pretty color! I love how it looks like a lipgloss.

  8. Gina

This is a nice shade, and I’ve been looking for a sheer red. My lips are naturally pigmented and I think this would suit me fine 😀

  9. I love sheer red lipsticks. This looks really nice.

  10. Diana B

I’m scared of reds but I think this color would be a great way to try out reds since its sheer

  11. Ashley

I love it, it actually looks lovely on you, almost like a lipstain.

  12. Hmm… I’m not a fan. I really think lipsticks should stay opaque.

  13. Sharon M

This lipstick is about the only way I’d wear red since it’s semi-sheer — the finish is really pretty. Although I’d like to find a blue-based red with the same semi-sheerness.

  14. Grace

a tad sheer but I like the juicy color!

I have to admit that 99% of the time, I prefer my lipsticks opaque and highly pigmented. I rarely use lipgloss, too. Normally, I would never even give such a lipstick a second glance. However, it looks so nice and moisturizing on you, that I actually went ahead and bought it based on your review :). I figured it would make a nice, flattering pop of color for work, where I need to look relatively natural, and also provide some moisture for my poor, dry lips.

Funny-I just got this today from, and it looks soooo much more burgundy on me… barely red at all! I am pretty pale and have almost no natural color in my lips, either. Maybe once I wear it out in sunlight the red will come out.
