Coutorture will be guest edited by Jenny Flevin, Harper Bazaar’s senior editor, this Friday. She recently released a book called Harper’s Bazaar’s Great style, and they came up with some excellent categories of style. We thought we would run with their ideas and add our own beauty-take to them!

The Classicists
She’s the woman who goes for basic, classic, and utterly sophisticated in solid colors often in white, khaki, greys, and blacks. She isn’t distracted by the latest trend, she is truly timeless in her appearance.

With such effortless style, it is no doubt that makeup is absolutely minimal–at least to the human eye–and there only to enhance the natural structure and angles of the face. A light wash of wheat-hued shadow with lashes coated once or twice in a brown-black or soft black mascara; perhaps a touch of gray or navy liner for more adventurous days. Cheeks are always just a touch flushed, altogether naturally rosy. Classicists keep lips in neutral-pinks or neutral-peaches, depending on skintones; you’ll find a dozen lipstck favorites in semi-matte and semi-gloss finishes with only a gloss or two with just the faintest shimmery sheen for evenings out on the town.

The Bombshells
She’s the woman that attracks all eyes; women envy her sense of daring style and sense of sexy, while men are merely charmed by her nature. She is all about emphasizing her femininity with curve-hugging dresses with plunging necklines in bold colors.

Her best friend is likely the smoky eye, dark grays and blacks–maybe brown or bronze for tamer days–with long, sultry lashes in the blackest black. Sometimes she bats false lashes with enviable lengths and volume. Look for lips in glossy pinks when paired with a vixenish smoky eye. She may switch it up on you to keep you intrigued by going for a siren-red pout with plenty of eye-catching sheen. Her cheeks will make her glow, and her skin is eminently flawless.

The Bohemians
She loves unusual patterns with floral, retro, and ethnic inspiration behind them in free-flowing pieces; sometimes vintage, sometimes modern with a resminiscent stylish edge. She’s as carefree as she wants to be, and it isn’t a surprise she has so much fun.

Embracing her natural beauty, she idolizes beauty products that protect and enhance what she has, rather than faking it. She loves keeping her skin smooth as silk with morning and night moisturizing, and she likely keeps her daily makeup incredibly simple. Perhaps a dark berry lip to pair with her deep violet, floral printed dress in a semi-matte finish and a swipe of black mascara on lashes.  She flushes prettily with the fairest hint of a cool pink blush.

The Ladies
Always classic, impeccably feminine, and so unattainable. She finds herself in black and white pieces more often than anything, and she generally goes for pieces high in quality with elegant styling. She adds her own personal style with subtle accents; perhaps something as simple as a bold colored heel.

Hair coiffed and styled to perfection, she looks gorgeous–made up and yet completely not. Her skin is absolutley flawless, doubtlessly due to her meticulous skincare regimen that includes religious use of sunscreen and high-end moisturizers. She finds comfort in lines like Chanel and Dior, where classic, natural beauty reigns surpreme over trends of the moment. When she feels the need to be more over the top, you might find her with a deep red, mostly matte lip rather than her more naturally pink-peach lip. She pays more attention to keeping her brows shaped naturally and trimmed than bothering with complicated eyeshadow combinations.  She goes for beauty that is timeless.

The Mavericks
Nobody is more willing to sacrifice for the sake of fashion than these ladies. They ask for trends, break them, and reinvent them. They can’t wait to try the latest and maybe-not-yet-greatest; they go for pieces that haven’t caught the public’s eyes yet. They never cease to surprise with what they might grace you with next.

They’re comfortable in an all-black smoky eye with rosy pink lips, but they’ll happily rock the glossy red lip, too. You might find them reaching for the ultra-vampy deep berry black-reds that so many of us fear trying. They’ll go for long lashes, pops of color on their cheeks, and they’ll be smiling all night long. They find a sense of artistry and creativity even in their makeup that keeps us on our toes and wondering whether that’ll be the next trend in beauty.

The Minimalists
Monochromatically dressed with a clear preference for rich blacks in classic pieces. Clothes that show off the feminine form, but do not do so in a distracting manner–more in the style of power, professionalism. Trends never even enter their mind; they don’t bother themselves searching for endless prints and patterns, their wardrobe is entirely suitable for any season, any year.

They keep their hair cleanly swept away from their face, allowing their natural beauty to shine through. Skin is so good it doesn’t need foundation to look flawless. Lips always look pouty and perfect with a soft coral lipstick with a semi-matte finish or even a quick dab of gently tinted gloss. With their penchant for blacks, grays, and whites, you might find they dress themselves up with a classic smoky eye with kohl-rimmed eyes and sophisticated lashes in medium lengths–but only for an evening on the red carpet.

The Eclectics
They seek out the bold, eccentric, and fun–and somehow manage to make it come together for the most darling of looks. She inspires us to be more daring in our own style, but we are still dazzled by her ideas and gumption. She is a woman of her own mind, and she knows when to play her style up, and when to go for something classic.

Bright-eyed, she always looks wide-awake with long, fluttery lashes and warmed-up cheeks. She opts for a sultry smoky eye in a range of colors, not just the typical gray or black. You might find her with violet-lined lids or even with a touch of olive green. Sometimes she loves a great retro-red lip, but she doesn’t mind going for a toned down, peachy-neutral glossy lip either. You just never know what her sense of style or mood will dictate when it comes to beauty–it’s as hard to predict as it is to predict what she might do next.

Who’s the girl who finds herself in jeans every day? Cuz that would be me…Make-up wise I’m an Eclectic.

  2. Tonee

    Looks like I’m a Maverick :)

  3. Carrie

I live in a small northern town and am as likely to be in snow boots as t-strap wedges. I guess I’m a classicist with a touch of electic.

  4. Allie

I’m Bombshell with a touch of Maverick. Right now I’m rocking black smoky eyes and a glossy pink lip. The natural look just doesn’t work for me.

  5. Probably an Eclectic because I definitely don’t fit into any of the other categories. Lol! How about you, Christine?

    • Gosh, I don’t fit in any either. I need the jeans and tank top category – ’cause that’s me. I might be a bit of a Bombshell if I have an occasion.

  6. Niqui

I am some of each depending on my mood I think. I guess I would say mostly eclectic though.
