Urban Decay Backtalk Matte Revolution Lipstick
Urban Decay Backtalk Matte Revolution Lipstick

Urban Decay Backtalk Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte mauve-nude pink.” It’s a muted, medium pink with neutral-to-cool undertones and a satin finish. On me, it leans a little warm against my undertones, but it looks more cool-toned in the tube (to my eye). It had full color coverage that applied smoothly and evenly as the consistency was creamy and glided across the lips without dragging. This shade lasted for five and a half hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. MAC Mehr (P, $16.00) is darker. Tom Ford Beauty Indian Rose (P, $50.00) is darker, glossier. Kat Von D Lovecraft (P, $21.00) is less glossy. Givenchy Rose d’Exception (206) (LE, $36.00) is warmer. NARS Anna (P, $32.00) is glossier. NARS Vanessa (P, $32.00) is lighter, glossier. NARS Anita (P, $32.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier. Colour Pop Squeeze (LE, $5.00) is lighter. Tom Ford Beauty Addison (LE, $32.00) is lighter. Maybelline Touch of Spice (P, $7.99) is darker, warmer. Maybelline Touch of Spice (P, $7.99) is darker, warmer. Colour Pop Solow (P, $6.00) is lighter, less glossy. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Urban Decay Carnal Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “matte medium warn nude.” It’s a muted, medium-dark orange-brown with warm undertones and a satin finish. It had rich, opaque pigmentation that covered the lips with smooth, even color without dragging during application. The consistency was comfortable while the color lasted for seven hours on me. Maybelline Maple Kiss (925) (P, $7.49) is brighter, glossier. MAC Persistence (P, $16.00) is darker, more muted. NARS Femme Fleur (LE, $26.00) is brighter. Maybelline Clay Crush (P, $7.99) is lighter. NARS Het Loo (P, $25.00) is warmer. MAC Mocha (P, $16.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Both of these shades will be exclusive to UrbanDecay.com and freestanding Urban Decay stores beginning mid-August.

Formula Summary | Urban Decay Matte Revolution Lipstick ($22.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a new formula releasing on July 8th (later for retailers). There are eleven shades in the range with two exclusive to Urban Decay’s website and freestanding stores. The formula is supposed to be smooth, pigmented, creamy, and “provide long-lasting moisture.” It’s a very pigmented, semi-matte to natural finish formula that wears a really, really long time and wears away evenly without bleeding or feathering. My only issue with these is that they’re more of a satin finish than a true matte one, but if that’s not a deal-breaker, they’re worth checking out. I was extremely impressed by how long-wearing the formula was without being drying. I could wear a shade from 9AM to 9PM and not once think, “I really wish I could apply lip balm.” Some shades have more slip than others, and as a result, the ones with more slip have a more satin-like sheen to them, while a couple were less creamy and applied with more of a semi-matte finish from the get-go. Most shades wore down to a traditional matte (but not liquid lipstick flat-matte finish) within an hour to two of wear. The texture is significantly less creamy with a lot less slip compared to the Sheer Revolution and original Revolution formulas, which have a much more luminous sheen with a slight tackiness to the texture, whereas these have no tackiness and a more velvety feel (they remind me of NARS Audacious Lipsticks in that respect). These hug the lips more as a result but surprisingly, they’re very comfortable to wear. What’s particularly nice is that the texture has some creaminess and weight to it, so while it can transfer onto cups and the like, there’s so much of it that it doesn’t wear away the color, and you can also smooth out any smudges if you dabbed with a napkin. There was no discernible scent or taste.

Temptalia Asks You

What kind of makeup look would you love to wear but are afraid to try? Share!

Temptalia's AnswerI can’t think of a makeup look (it all washes off is my motto! and from someone who wears different eye makeup on each eye and leaves the house… well, you know!), but I love the look of non-traditional hair dye but I can’t imagine it looking good on me. (I’m also not at all committed to the upkeep.)

Sephora Tranquil (26) Colorful Blush (Contour)
Sephora Tranquil (26) Colorful Blush (Contour)

Sephora Tranquil (26) Colorful Blush (Contour) ($15.00 for 0.12 oz.) is described as a “contour.” It’s a muted, medium-dark taupe with very subtle warm undertones. Smashbox Contour (P, ) is lighter, warmer. NYX Taupe (P, $6.50) is warmer. Kat Von D Sombre (P, ) is lighter, warmer. Inglot #504 (P, $15.00) is lighter. NYX Taupe (P, $5.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer. Chanel Notorious (LE, $45.00) is more shimmery, darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

The Colorful Blush formula is supposed to be long-wearing, buildable, and have a lightweight texture. My experience with the formula has shown that they’re soft, lightly powdery at times (some are worse than others) with semi-sheer to semi-opaque color coverage that blends fairly well and lasts seven to eight hours. There is some variance between shades, but there are some gems in the range. The color of Tranquil makes it more unique, but the texture is very powdery, so it has a lot of excess product that gets all over the pan and may look powdery on drier skin types. It blended out decently, though I was surprised it didn’t blend out more readily given the texture. On me, the color lasted for seven hours before fading.

P.S. — You may be seeing some inconsistency in photo sizes in the next week or two, as we will be increasing the size of our images, but photos that were already processed earlier will be in the previous size. Thanks for understanding :)

Kat Von D Electric Warrior Metal Crush Eyeshadow
Kat Von D Electric Warrior Metal Crush Eyeshadow

FORMULA SUMMARY | Kat Von D Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is supposed to have “maximum pigment and extreme wear” with a “creamy and lustrous” finish available in eleven shades (though only ten are online at the moment). The texture of the majority of the shades is very soft, dense, thick, and creamy; they feel more like a hybrid of cream and powder than your typical powder. All ten shades were quite pigmented when pressed into the skin with a flat or firm brush (MAC 242), and while almost all of the shades applied well with your regular eyeshadow brush (like MAC’s 239), one shade didn’t work as well (Black No. 1) as it was more sparkly and didn’t bind together as well. The formula was long-wearing on me with wear ranging from eight to nine hours. I found the texture comparable to Make Up For Ever Diamond/Metallic finish eyeshadows, though these are larger (0.10 oz. vs. 0.08 oz.)

Kat Von D Electric Warrior Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pearlescent citron green.” It’s a bold, brightened chartreuse green with warm, yellow undertones and a frosted, slightly metallic, sheen. The texture was soft, smooth, creamy, and blendable on the skin while having great adhesion on bare lids with wear that came in at eight and a half hours. NARS Rated R #1 (P, $24.00) is less shimmery, darker. CoverGirl Lime Light (310) (LE, $4.99) is lighter. MAC Chartreuse Bouquet (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker. Kat Von D Birdcage (LE, ) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. NARS Tropical Princess #1 (LE, $24.00) is lighter. Colour Pop Sour (P, $5.00) is less shimmery, lighter. Colour Pop Mermaid Kiss (P, $5.00) is less shimmery, darker, cooler. MAC Green Clean #2 (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter, more muted. Make Up For Ever ME338 Acidic Green (P, $21.00) is brighter, cooler. Make Up For Ever I340 Lime Green (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer. Giorgio Armani #17 (P, $32.00) is darker, cooler. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Paranoid Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pearlescent cobalt.” It’s a brightened, medium blue with a frosted sheen. It was intensely pigmented with a creamy, smooth consistency that blended beautifully on the skin without sheering out. This shade wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing slightly. MAC Freshwater (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted. MAC Blue Calm (P, $16.00) is darker. Urban Decay Peace (P, $18.00) is lighter. Sephora Collection Surfin’ USA (14) (P, $13.00) is warmer. Sleek MakeUP Sunset #6 (P, $9.99) is less shimmery, lighter. CoverGirl Sapphire Flare (315) (LE, $4.99) is darker. Make Up For Ever ME216 Electric Blue (P, $21.00) is darker, more muted. Make Up For Ever ME232 Turquoise Blue (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, warmer. Make Up For Ever S214 Ultramarine Blue (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Iggy Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “pearlescent mermaid green.” It’s a lightly brightened, medium-dark emerald green with cool undertones and a pearly sheen. The texture was slightly firmer, though smooth, but it seemed denser overall. It applied better with a firmer, synthetic brush than my go-to eyeshadow brush, though the difference was slight (you can definitely use a domed eyeshadow brush with it). This shade wore well for nine and a half hours and didn’t stain the lid (which I was surprised to find!). Milani Green Safari (P, $6.49) is darker, warmer. Sephora Collection Picnic in the Park (07) (P, $13.00) is warmer. NARS Misfit #2 (P, $24.00) is less shimmery, darker. Make Up For Ever #52 (LE, $23.00) is more shimmery. Sugarpill Midori (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, darker, less pigmented, warmer. Make Up For Ever ME304 Emerald (P, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker, warmer. Buxom Pre-nup (P, $12.00) is lighter, more muted, cooler. Disney by Sephora Fins (LE, ) is warmer. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Black No. 1 Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as an “iridescent gunmetal.” It’s a muted, medium-dark charcoal gray with cool undertones and larger silver sparkle. This shade was a little “chunky” in a way, as the sparkle gave it a noticeable layer of texture and seemed prone to crumbling during application, rather than binding together–even with used with a flat and firm brush. With a tacky base, I think it would work better, or possibly with a damp brush (not sure if these can be used wet, though). MAC Knight Divine (P, $16.00) is darker. NARS Bad Behaviour (LE, $24.00) is less shimmery. bareMinerals Abracadabra (LE, ) is less shimmery, lighter. MAC Bao Bao’s Jewels #5 (LE, ) is less shimmery. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Enigma #2 (P, ) is less shimmery. theBalm Surf’s Up (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery. Stila Black Diamond (P, ) is less shimmery, darker. NARS Jardin Perdu (Left) (LE, $24.00) is lighter. MAC Say It Isn’t So (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, lighter. NYX Smoke & Mirrors (P, $6.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.

Kat Von D Static Age Metal Crush Eyeshadow ($21.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “metallic silver.” It’s a bright, light silver with a metallic sheen. It had good color payoff with a soft, creamy, and blendable texture that wore for eight and a half hours on me. Le Metier de Beaute Platinum (P, $30.00) is less shimmery. Urban Decay Crystal (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery. MAC Guise (LE, $21.00) is darker. Marc Jacobs Beauty The Starlet #6 (P, ) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Pretty in Paris (LE, $9.99) is lighter, brighter. MAC A Party of Pastels #1 (P, $21.00) is lighter. Dior Trompe L’Oeil (011) (LE, $31.00) is lighter, warmer. MAC A Waft of Grey #2 (P, $21.00) is lighter. Make Up For Ever ME202 Iceberg Blue (P, $21.00) is lighter. MAC Just Breathe #1 (LE, $21.00) is darker, more muted. Kat Von D Moonshine (LE, ) is warmer. Urban Decay Shellshock (LE, $18.00) is darker. Milani Bella Silver (20) (P, $4.49) is less shimmery, darker. Giorgio Armani Silver Chafer (35) (LE, $33.00) is darker. Too Faced Jailbird (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
