Pink Goddess

J. Cat Beauty Pink Goddess You Glow Girl Baked Highlighter ($9.00 for 0.30 oz.) is a medium, rosy copper with warm, brown undertones and flecks of larger gold sparkle over a more frosted sheen. The looser sparkle did not translate too noticeably on the skin, and after buffing and blending, it had a luminous sheen that was shy of being metallic (which also meant it did not emphasize my skin’s natural texture!).

The formula is described as a “multi-dimensional baked formula” that has “all day long” wear with an “intense shimmer pigment.” I liked it more once I got a chance to apply it to cheeks, as the texture was drier and felt almost rough from the sparkles/looser feel of the powder on the skin. I had no trouble blending out and diffusing the edges of the powder highlighter on my cheeks, and it had a beautiful finish after it was applied. It had medium, buildable pigmentation that stayed on well for six and a half hours.

A Gold, Teal, & Copper Look

About this Look

For date night, I wanted to do something for myself, so after I finished testing the day’s products, I took everything off and redid my makeup just for the evening.  I really enjoyed Anastasia’s summer eyeshadow singles, so I revisited those and tried to put together a combination I would normally think of immediately.  My husband even complimented me during dinner about how pretty my makeup looked (which, given that he sees me in various states of makeup testing, he does not usually remark one way or the other!).

Silent Disco

Milk Makeup Silent Disco Eye Pigment ($24.00 for 0.34 oz.) is a blackened plum with warm, brown undertones and flecks of plum and pink sparkle. It had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it was hard to control the coverage and evenness on the lid except if I used a fingertip to sheer it out (but then it looked blotchy as this type of color often does at sheerer coverage levels). The larger sparkles seemed to impede the application and made the product lift from the area whenever I tried to even it out. It did not build up well, as it made the dried down texture uneven and chunky-looking. It lasted decently for nine hours but some larger pieces of product started to flake off.

The formula is supposed to be a “highly pigmented cream eyeshadow” that is “long-wearing” with a “soft, silky texture” that will dry “quickly without creasing” but is still “easily blendable.” I bought five shades (there are 11 in the range) and had good luck with three of them and found two to be more troublesome to use. It seemed like the more pearly shades were easier to use than the ones with larger sparkles. I wasn’t sure if the squeeze tube format was going to work, but it was fairly easy to dispense product without getting too much at once but product can get dried out and clog the opening.

The texture was smooth, creamy, and emollient enough to spread easily across the lid. They dried down quickly but I did not feel too rushed (I would still work one eye at a time, though). I noticed that they felt a bit heavier on the lids and had a tendency to cling and emphasize any texture on my lids (most noticeable on the inner portion of my lids). They lasted between nine and eleven hours on me with one of the more glittery shades crumbling over time. I applied mine using a flat, synthetic brush (like MAC 242) as well as fingertips, though I personally prefer brushes so that is what I reached for most of the time.

Candy Floss

ColourPop Candy Floss Blotted Lips ($5.00 for 0.035 oz.) is a medium, peachy brown with warm, orange undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had medium to nearly opaque pigmentation–it was definitely one of the more pigmented shades in the line-up. The lipstick applied evenly and smoothly with a slightly creamier texture compared to other shades, which might have been responsible for the less matte finish as well. There was a smidgen of color that pulled into my deeper lip lines. It wore well for four hours and was non-drying.

The Blotted Lip formula is described as a “sheer matte lipstick” that has “buildable” coverage that ranges from “light to medium” and has a “lightweight” feel. The formula had an interesting texture–firmer, waxy but velvety like a more silicone-heavy formula would feel–so it glided on with ease after it warmed up against the lips but initially felt quite firm in the tube. They look more like a lip stain than lipstick on the lips, as the consistency is thin and adheres well to lips–without emphasizing the texture of them–and the semi-sheer to medium coverage reinforces the stain-like appearance. The wear was average (usually around four hours) but was non-drying.

It would come down to the formula, I think — which formula I preferred, that’s the one I would get. The other instance is if the original product was no longer available (discontinued, in another country, etc.) then that would make it so the dupe would be the only way to get that type of a product or color.

Electric Orange

Maybelline Electric Orange ColorSensational Vivids Lip Color ($7.99 for 0.15 oz.) is a bright, medium orange with warm, red undertones and a cream finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that applied evenly to the lips. The lipstick was lightly creamy with moderate slip but did not slide around while worn. I did notice a subtle amount of color that had settled into my lip lines. It wore well for four and a half hours and was moisturizing over time.

I’ve reviewed this formula (and I believe the majority of shades released) before, but it’s one of my favorite drugstore lipstick formulas and wanted to update swatches. I was dismayed to see how many shades were discontinued, though, as there are only seven in the current range. The Vivids formula is supposed to have “vibrant color” and a hydrating feel. I repurchased the seven shades still available, and I re-tested them (and re-swatched/photographed!). Overall, the Vivids formula has a very smooth, creamy consistency that has moderate slip and a luminous sheen and semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation. They felt hydrating to me over time and were comfortable to wear. They have a moderate, sweet, floral scent but no discernible taste.
