If it’s a more pigmented base product, then I’ll use a separate tool for layering,
whether that be my fingertip or a lip brush. For gloss, I prefer fingertips unless it’s very pigmented, then a brush is handier (especially to get it along my cupid’s bow). For a powder product, always fingertips as I find lip brushes a little harder to ensure even distribution of most powders.

Tom Ford Disclosure Cheek Color ($60.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a medium-dark pink with subtle, cool undertones and a mostly matte finish. It had medium, buildable pigmentation–up to mostly opaque–that applied fairly evenly to the skin. I felt like it took a bit of extra effort to really diffuse and blend out the blush, but it wasn’t too much work to get the blush into place. The texture was thin, a little dusty in the pan, but finely-milled. It wore well for nine and a half hours before fading on me.

For 2017, Tom Ford reformulated this powder blush formula, and the new formula is described as “layers of possibility, from a sexy glow to a more dramatic, color-rich look” (that sounds like “buildable”) that is supposed to apply “with the comfort of a cream.” Overall, the texture is thinner, finely-milled but drier than the original formula, and the shimmer has become finer and less apparent through many of the new-old shades. The formula was still fairly blendable to very blendable and particularly long-wearing with semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation.

FDSA ($55.00 for 0.09 oz.) is a rich, medium-dark pink-coral with warm undertones and a natural sheen. It had nearly opaque pigmentation that covered the lips evenly and smoothly. The consistency was lightweight, creamy with moderate slip, and easy to spread across the lips. It had the type of texture that glided on without tugging on the lips and felt like it “melted” during application. The lipstick was hydrating over the three hours it lasted.

Tom Ford Moisturecore Lip Color is supposed to have two formulas in one. The center is described as a “liquid core” that “provides luxurious moisture” while the exterior is hydrating, has golden pearl, and yields a “soft veil of lightweight color that lasts for hours.” The formula is lightweight, moderately emollient, and somewhat hydrating. It didn’t have great longevity as wear ranged from two to four hours depending on the shade. They don’t really have a “soft veil” of color, as most of them are fairly pigmented. It is vanilla-scented with no discernible taste. In general, the formula is a little heavier but has noticeably less shine than the also-new Ultra-Rich Lip Colors.

Contour Powders

So many of them are very, very warm-toned! It’s not that warm-toned contours shouldn’t exist, but it’s more the lack of neutral and cool-toned contour powders (in comparison) that is puzzling!

Tarte Skinny Dip Rainforest of the Sea Color Splash Lipstick ($21.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium, peachy brown with warm undertones and a cream finish. There was a noticeable shine to the finish, but it didn’t feel too slippery applied, so I didn’t have issues with streaking. I did, however, get color that pulled into my lip lines initially, which worsened over time. There was enough creaminess that I was able to smooth some of the color out while I wore it, but it was hard to prevent without a lip primer or lip liner. It had nearly opaque coverage that still ended up applying better than expected, given the lightness of the color in this type of a finish. This shade wore well for four and a half hours on me and was hydrating over time.

The formula is supposed to be “long-wearing,” “full coverage,” and hydrating. The consistency has an incredibly smooth, creamy feel to it and has enough substance and thickness to it that it adheres well to the lips and usually doesn’t pull into lip lines. I felt like the formula felt slightly more emollient initially and “dried” a bit to more of a satin-to-cream finish after a few minutes (but not a true dry down, as it wasn’t transfer-resistant!). The majority of shades were very pigmented, easy to apply, comfortable to wear with light to moderate hydration over time, and lasted between four and seven hours on me. A few of the lightest and darkest shades weren’t as pigmented or were less flattering on the lips compared to more of the medium shades. There did not seem to be any added fragrance to it (smelled slightly waxy), and I didn’t notice any taste.

Becca Capri Coast Sunlit Bronzer ($38.00 for 0.25 oz.) is a medium brown with warm undertones and a golden sheen. It had semi-opaque and buildable to full coverage with two layers of product, if desired. The powder was smooth, soft without being dusty, and easy to work with on the cheeks and face as the powder blended out nicely. There was noticeable shimmer in the powder, but it produced a luminous sheen when blended out on the skin that did not emphasize my skin’s natural texture. This shade wore well for eight hours on me.

The formula is supposed to have a “silky texture” with a “natural warmth.” It’s a powder bronzer that’s available in five shades–from a light-medium brown to a deeper copper-red. Overall, the texture of the formula was soft, smooth, and blendable with a couple of shades being dusty and others being well-balanced between soft and firm. The coverage was mostly opaque to opaque, so a little went a long way but the softer powder made it easy to diffuse and blend out for sheerer coverage, if desired. The formula wore from seven and a half to eight hours on me.
