Giorgio Armani #501 Uptown & #601 Plum Vinyl Ecstasy Lacquers

Giorgio Armani Uptown (501) Ecstasy Lacquer

Giorgio Armani #501 Uptown Ecstasy Lacquer ($38.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a medium, pink-coral with warm undertones and a creamy, lightly glossy finish. It darkens quite a bit on lips and appears pinker as well. It had semi-opaque coverage which went on evenly, and it was somewhat buildable (it’s supposed to be buildable). The color wore for six hours and left behind a strong stain. MAC Never Say Never (LE, $20.00) is lighter (90% similar). NARS Salamanca (P, $26.00) is lighter (90% similar). Guerlain Candy Stripe (P, $30.00) is warmer (85% similar). Dior Rose Tricheuse (669) (LE, $35.00) is warmer (85% similar). Revlon Papaya (P, $7.49) is warmer (85% similar). Giorgio Armani #601 Plum Vinyl Ecstasy Lacquer ($38.00 for 0.20 fl. oz.) is a medium-dark plum with subtle, cooler undertones and a lightly shiny finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage in one layer and could be built up to mostly opaque coverage (but always with some translucency) with two to three layers. The consistency spread across the lips well and left even color that didn’t gather into lip lines (not an easy feat for deeper shades like this). The color wore for almost eight hours with the shine fading after five hours. Tom Ford Beauty Exposed (P, $52.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). MAC Lust for Life (LE, $15.00) is more shimmery (90% similar). Revlon Embellished (P, $7.49) is warmer (90% similar). Urban Decay Vice (P, $22.00) is more shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Maybelline Caviar Couture (050) (P, $8.99) is cooler (90% similar). Chanel Distinction (21) (P, $34.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Sephora Collection Plum Fiction (19) (P, $14.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Chanel Crushed Cherry (DC, $30.00) is darker, warmer (80% similar). MAC Peer Pressure (LE, $20.00) is darker (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

FORMULA SUMMARY | The Ecstasy Lacquer formula is supposed to have the shine of a gloss, color and hydration of a lipstick, and the long-wear of a stain, though they say “applied in a single layer for a subtle touch of color … or in a layered application for a bold, statement lip.” It has a floral scent, which is noticeable in the tube and for an hour or so of wear (particularly strong when it is drying down). There is a slight taste to me, as well. Initially, the formula is thin and more water-like, but after you’ve applied it, the consistency thickens, levels out, and “adheres” to your lips in a very comfortable wear. The consistency is mostly non-sticky and gradually gets a lightly tacky about half-way through wear.

Make Up For Ever Florals (Vol. 3) Artist Palette

Make Up For Ever Florals (Vol. 3) Artist Palette

Make Up For Ever Florals (Vol. 3) Artist Palette ($44.00 for 0.45 oz.) includes nine shades (all of the shades are also available individually in the permanent range). Two things worth noting: there are several repeats in this palette if you already own several of their past releases, and the amount of product in this is less than the last two volumes and $2 more. Oh, and there are, again, no matte shades. It’s such a shame that they’ve continued to repeat shades when they have 200+ shades in their range to choose from (see this sheet for repeats). If you haven’t picked up a lot of the brand’s palettes or singles previously, it IS a good palette overall — pigmented, long-wearing, and easy to use.

ME230 Peacock Blue is a muted, medium-dark blue with “warmer” tones and a frosted sheen. It is still a cool-toned shade, of course! It had good pigmentation, but it was as opaque as my permanent version (or other variations I’ve come across in their palettes), unfortunately. The texture was a little firmer, though still dense and blendable, and ultimately, when applied, it builds up easily and within two layers so the lack of pigmentation wasn’t noticeable. It lasted for eight and a half hours. Stila Sapphire (P) is lighter (95% similar). bareMinerals Controversy (LE) is darker (95% similar). Guerlain Les Aquas #3 (P) is darker (90% similar). theBalm Open to Offers Olwen (LE, $16.00) is lighter (90% similar). Colour Pop Coconut (P, $5.00) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). MAC Pre-Packaged (LE, $16.00) is darker (90% similar). Sugarpill Magpie (P, $13.00) is more shimmery, darker, more muted (90% similar). Gucci Beauty Iconic Ottanio (P, $37.00) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Giorgio Armani #18 (P, $32.00) is less shimmery, darker, more muted (85% similar). Anastasia Prussian Blue (P, $12.00) is cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Unhinged (LE, $18.00) is lighter (85% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl #5 (P) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Urban Decay Haight (P, $18.00) is lighter (85% similar). Disney by Sephora Friend Like Me (LE) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). Rouge Bunny Rouge Mysterious Tinamou (P, $19.00) is lighter (85% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Emerald Lust #3 (LE) is lighter (85% similar). Sephora Collection Stormy Seas (113) (LE, $13.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). Urban Decay Junkie (LE, $18.00) is darker, cooler (85% similar). L'Oreal Timeless Blue Spark (760) (P, $7.99) is lighter (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

I544 Pink Granite is a muted, medium-dark taupe brown with rosy undertones and a subtle, grayish cast paired with a frosted finish. It had nice color coverage with a soft, smooth, and blendable texture that was easy to use and lasted for nine hours on me. Urban Decay Bust (P, $18.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Tarte Steel the Scene (LE) is less shimmery (95% similar). Laura Mercier Amethyst (P, $28.00) is warmer (95% similar). MAC Fall in Lust (LE, $16.00) is warmer (95% similar). Natasha Denona Skin, Suede, Shell, Flamingo Eyeshadows

Natasha Denona Eyeshadow

Natasha Denona Eyeshadow ($29.00 for 0.08 oz.) comes in 66 shades with four distinct finishes (Matte, Duo-Chrome, Metallic, and Sparkling). According to the brand, the eyeshadow formula is supposed to have “full, rich and intense color that won’t fade out, be “long-lasting,” and smooth. The majority of the shimmery shades were very pigmented with a soft consistency that was something just right and other times a little prone to crumbling/loosening in the pan, while the mattes were smooth but quite powdery, which resulted it color that didn’t adhere to bare skin as readily. The texture of most shades is soft, blendable, and most of the shimmery shades I’ve tested applied well to bare skin. The wear was fairly consistent, but there was some variance from shade to shade (which didn’t seem related to finish). The wear has ranged from five to eight hours, depending on the shade. Primer helps with longevity, adding two to three hours to the shade’s no-primer wear time, but they seem like shorter-wearing eyeshadows compared to most powder formulas I’ve tried.

Check out my first review for more depth about the formula as well as a pricing breakdown for singles compared to palettes.

Skin (75S) is a light-medium, coppery brown with warm, reddish tones and a frosted sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that was a smidgen loose and dry to the touch but applied well with minimal fall out. The color wore well for seven and a half hours on me before creasing. Disney by Sephora Wanderin' Free (LE) is lighter (95% similar). Rouge Bunny Rouge Angelic Cockatiels (P, $19.00) is lighter (95% similar). Sephora + Pantone Universe Café au Lait (LE) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Penny Lane (LE, $18.00) is warmer (90% similar). Disney by Sephora All Aglow (LE) is more shimmery (90% similar). Viseart Camille (P) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Urban Decay Steady (LE, $18.00) is lighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Moonflower (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Laura Mercier Rosegold (P, $28.00) is lighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Tan Lines (LE) is darker (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Dreamer #2 (P) is brighter, warmer (85% similar). bareMinerals Bare Skin (LE) is cooler (85% similar). Anastasia Bellini (LE, $12.00) is warmer (85% similar). Make Up For Ever D712 Creme Brulee (P, $21.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Viseart Beaux-Arts (P) is lighter, brighter (85% similar). Tarte Shining Star (LE) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Stila Affection (P) is darker, warmer (85% similar). LORAC Unbelievable (P) is darker, cooler (80% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Suede (58V) is a muted, medium brown with warm, yellow tones and a gold sparkle. This shade had semi-sheer coverage with a powdery, drier consistency where a lot of the sparkle blended away from the base, so most of it was lost in the brush or fell below the lid during application. I couldn’t build this one up over bare skin, so this would have to be used with a good, color-boosting kind of primer. It wore for six and a half hours before fading noticeably. Urban Decay Anaheim (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Stila Warm Honey (LE) is less shimmery, warmer (95% similar). MAC Wedge (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Buxom Star Treatment (P, $12.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Too Faced Cobblestone (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Too Faced Fifi (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Tarte Wanderer (LE) is less shimmery (90% similar). Stila Warm Taupe (LE) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). LORAC Undeniable (P) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Cocoa Mirage #2 (P) is less shimmery (90% similar). Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit No. 2 (LE) is less shimmery, cooler (90% similar). Urban Decay Fix (LE, $18.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). theBalm #10 (P, $6.50) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). Makeup Geek Preppy (P, $6.00) is less shimmery, warmer (85% similar). MAC Cork (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). Viseart Dark Matte #1 (P) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Tarte Hazelnut Bon Bons (LE) is less shimmery, cooler (85% similar). Too Faced Mousse (P, $16.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Tom Ford Starry Night Eyeshadow Quad

Tom Ford Starry Night Eyeshadow Quad

Tom Ford Starry Night Eyeshadow Quad ($80.00 for 0.35 oz.) is a middling group of cooler silvers/grays–a smoky eye with a hint of blue–but disappoints across the board. If you tend to like your eyeshadows sheerer, it might still fill those requirements, but the lack of blendability in the darkest shade makes it a lot less foolproof to use, even accounting for preference towards sheerer coverage.

Starry Night #1 is a pale, bluish gray with cool undertones and a pearl shimmer. It had semi-sheer coverage with a thin, dusty consistency that was prone to sheering out. This needs a good base to adhere to or else has a very sheer, faded appearance on the skin. It lasted for seven hours before fading noticeably. Sephora + Pantone Universe Oyster Mushroom (LE) is more shimmery (95% similar). theBalm #34 (P, $6.50) is more shimmery, lighter (95% similar). MAC Rondelle (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Make Up For Ever I120 Snow Gray (P, $21.00) is lighter (90% similar). Dior Eclectic #3 (LE) is lighter, brighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Cheers (P) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tarina Tarantino Lovely #1 (P) is more shimmery (90% similar). Make Up For Ever D118 Platinum (P, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker (90% similar). MAC Just Breathe #1 (LE, $21.00) is more shimmery, darker (85% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Starry Night #2 is a bright, silvery lilac with cool undertones and flecks of metallic silver and warmer lavender-pink sparkle and micro-glitter. The base is semi-sheer but has a heavy dosage of glitter, so it had more semi-opaque coverage overall. The texture was lightly creamy and almost wet-like to the touch. The glittery bits applied smoothly and evenly over the skin, and while not immune from fall out, it was only a minor amount after eight hours (pretty good for no adhesive base). Tom Ford Beauty Lilac Dream #2 (P) is warmer (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Ice Queen #2 (P) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Electric Illumination (LE, $22.00) is lighter (90% similar). MAC Sex & Disco (LE, $16.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Cle de Peau Silver Eclipse #3 (P) is darker (90% similar). See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Starry Night #3 is a muted, medium gray with subtle, cool undertones and a soft, pearly sheen. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable texture that was a little thin but not too dusty or powdery. The color lasted for eight hours before fading. Chanel Tisse Smoky #3 (P) is lighter (90% similar). bareMinerals Chateau (LE) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC A Waft of Grey #3 (P, $21.00) is warmer (90% similar). Colour Pop Tink (P, $5.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Rouge Bunny Rouge Trumpeter Koel (P, $19.00) is less shimmery (90% similar). MAC Thunder and Rain #1 (LE, $21.00) is less shimmery, darker (90% similar). Kat Von D Dios (LE) is lighter, more muted (85% similar). Hourglass Graphite #4 (P) is darker (85% similar).
