AMBI recognizes that women of African, Latin and South Asian heritage often face unique skincare challenges in keeping their skin clear and even toned due to the melanin in their skin. Melanin is a natural substance that gives color or pigment to skin and gives skin its rich, beautiful tone. However, melanin also may make skin more vulnerable to marks and uneven tone. Therefore, it is important for women with rich skin tones to have products that have been designed specifically to keep their skin clear and even toned.

After yesterday’s experimentation, this is my actual look for the day. Sometimes it’s fun just to have, well, fun with makeup – to be able to try out things and combinations that are gloriously over the top. Obviously, this is pre-hair cut!

You will need the following…

  • Eyes: Copperbeam pigment (metallic brown), Ricepaper eyeshadow (neutral highlighter), Bronze eyeshadow (dark brown), Smut eyeshadow (darkest brown), Texture eyeshadow (soft warm brown), UD Bourbon 24/7 Liner (warm brown), Rich Ground fluidline (warm brown), Plushlash mascara (black)
  • Cheeks: Blooming blush (soft pink)
  • Lips: Lightly Ripe lipstick (subtle deep pink), Liqueur lipglass (dirty brown)
  • Brushes: 266 (firm, angled brush), 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 129 (dense blush brush)
  • Substitutes: Copperbeam = Chocolate Brown; Blooming = CoyGirl; Lightly Ripe = Syrup; Liqueur = Spite

Directions: Define brows using a coordinating powder shadow applied with the 266 brush. Apply Copperbeam pigment all over the lid as the base with the 249. On the inner-to-middle lid, apply Ricepaper eyeshadow using the 239. Apply Texture eyeshadow to outer lid with the 239. Darken crease with Bronze eyeshadow with the 239, and then add depth using Smut eyeshadow. Sweep Ricepaper underneath the brow bone to highlight. Finish with UD Bourbon 24/7 Liner on lower lash line, Rich Ground fluidline on upper lash line, and Plushlash mascara on lashes. Sweep apples of cheeks with Blooming using the 129. Apply Lightly Ripe lipstick to lips, and then top with Liqueur lipglass for color and shine.

In my excitement to tell (and show!) you all about my new hairstyle, I totally overlooked how important a before and after shot would be! So, here it is :) I was completely overwhelmed by the response to the cut, so thank you all so very much! I agree I could go as short as the original inspiration cut, I love that I have the illusion of length, but the perks of shorter hair. It’s not fear holding me back to go shorter, it’s how much I love this modified cut and how well it reflects me! Thank you all for your assurance the cut worked out and I could go short :)

Temptalia Asks You

How do you make sure you get your beauty sleep? Do you wear a sleeping mask? Pamper yourself before bed?

I’ve spent the past week or two drooling over the above haircut. It just appeals to me, and I couldn’t really tell you why. Perhaps it’s because the model has such amazing features that she can rock this cut. I’ve always gone to the same hair salon for $8 hair cuts–yes, $8 haircuts–but I’ve always wanted to go to a professional hair stylist and have them do my hair. (Not to say they did a bad job; most of my visits were fine, but I didn’t ask for anything beyond lots of long layers!)

Well, I finally took the plunge. I went to Allan’s Salon this afternoon (I was so excited that they had an opening!) after reading all the rave reviews on Yelp!. $65 (and tip) later, and I’m loving my new ‘do! Allan was amazing–I brought in the photo above, but also something less tame, a lot longer, and he said I could totally work the one I wanted. But since I had expressed concern over going super short, he said he would add more length to it. Perfection. Absolute perfection.

I watched him when he did my blow out, to see how I would need to style it myself, and it didn’t look overly difficult. It’ll be interesting when I attempt it myself, but he just used a thermal protectant (duh), thickening spray by Bumble&Bumble, and then some pomade/wax. I think what I am so happy with is it is obviously different from my hair of 21 years, but it doesn’t look overly drastic. I was also thrilled to hear I could go shorter (he said I had the facial features for it) if I wanted to. Never was sure if I could pull off short hair! Nonetheless, parts of my hair had at least 7-8 inches taken off, so it is definitely a lot shorter than it was a few hours ago.

OK, OK, I know you just want to see how it turned out. Peep my new hair… Continue reading →
