Anastasia (yes, of the brow brand!) has listed several tips on getting glamorous eyes, ranging from how to open up your peepers to the perfect brow. Visit ExpertEyes to read them, and you can also enter to win a spa weekend in Beverly Hills.
My favorite tip is her advice on getting a good brow shape:
Achieving a well-shaped brow isn’t easy, especially on your own. That’s why I recommend you to have your brows done professionally (at least once) to get insights on your specific facial structure — and on how to maintain your look at home. Once you have a basic know-how, you can work on your precision and your patience. Just keep a few things in mind.
Think before you tweeze. Not every shape is right for every face, so consider a shape that complements your eyes. Try mapping out your “design” by filling it in with a brow pencil.
Check yourself out. Always tweeze a single row at a time, in the direction the hairs grow. Then take a step back and look in the mirror for a checkup. (If your brows are a bit unruly, comb them flat with a brow brush before tweezing.)
Fill in the blanks. Once your shape is in place, you can start to define it. If your brow hairs are sparse, or you just want more definition, fill in the shape with a brow pencil that matches your brow color, or one that’s a shade lighter. Or experiment with brow shadows for a softer, more natural look.
Today is World AIDS Day 2008, which is held each year on December 1st. It is a day when everyone comes together to raise awareness about the AIDS epidemic. This year marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. As the organization’s site says, “Whilst we have come a long ways since 1988, there is still much more to be done.”
If you’re looking for a way to get your beauty on and raise some awareness, check out:
- Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1 ($8.50), which sports the symbolic red ribbon. During the entire month of December, 100% of the proceeds of this lip balm will be donated to YouthAIDS.
- MAC Cosmetics’ Viva Glam Products are available year-round and 100% of the selling price goes to MAC AID Fund. Several choices in lipglasses and lipsticks are available.

Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($17.00) is the latest in eyeshadow bases. The often coveted Urban Decay Primer Potion may find itself displaced by Too Faced’s Shadow Insurance. Both products are very similar, but the most drastic difference is in the packaging. UDPP is notoriously famous for its wasteful genie bottle shaped packaging, which leaves a ton of unused product behind it (when you think it’s empty). So much in fact that people have sliced theirs open and discovered months more of usage out of it!
Enter Shadow Insurance: slim, tube packaging. It allows you to squeeze out the amount you need, and you’ll know when the tube gets empty. Of course, there may be some remnants left, so you can cut this baby open, too–but nowhere near the amount that gets suck in the curvature of the UDPP bottle. At $17, I do feel this is a little pricier than I’d like, because the amount you get is so, so small. The tube itself feels like you’d use it up in a week (you won’t), but the size is 0.35 oz. So here’s a lesson to learn: it’s not all about size. UDPP is 0.34oz and costs $16, so the two products are similar in size and cost, and I’m more familiar with how long UDPP lasts for people (months!). This helped put me at ease as I stared at the pint-sized tube of Shadow Insurance. I could rest easy, I could use it without fear of using it up.
When you’re looking for lipsticks to create that perfect holiday lip, consider Estee Lauder’s Hot Kiss & Maraschino ($22.00 each).
Hot Kiss is a subtle mauve-berry-brown color with subtle shimmer. It goes on more brown with hints of mauve in the color on the lips, but it is a very sophisticated lip color that doesn’t attract attention like a more traditional holiday red pout does. It reminds me of how a nice coral lip can look in the summertime, but this is taken down to a deeper level ideal for the fall and winter, when lip color goes darker.
Maraschino is a sexy, sultry reddish color that looks red in the tube, but has a great pink base, which gives you a good mix between the two. It’s a great alternative to the bright red lip often seen at holiday parties–it’s something to consider regardless of whether you’re a bit wary of red or if you’re looking to move away from a signature red.
