Ask Temptalia Session #026

Got a question? Now’s the time to ask it!

I’m taking your questions and answering them today. You can feel free to ask any question you’d like, both beauty-related or unrelated! Some tips on asking me questions so that you can get the best answer AND quickly…

  • For color/makeup recommendations, please let me know your skin tone, if you have a brand preference, colors you love (whatever is applicable). I don’t want to recommend something that doesn’t work for your skin coloring or recommend a brand that’s more than you want to spend!
  • If you’ve tried a lot of products and are still looking for the one that works, if you could tell me products or techniques you have tried, that helps me suss out what might work! Again, I’d hate to just recommend you a product/technique you’ve tried!
  • Please, please be patient.  Each session generates between 400-600 questions.  I will answer all that are received within the session’s time limit, but it may take me a few hours to get back to you, so I only ask that you be patient with me :)
  • You can also check out last session’s summary/wrap-up, as well as our FAQ.

It is always a pleasure to answer your questions, and I hate answering your question with a follow-up question about your coloring or what brand you’d like the dupe in or what-have-you, so hopefully this will allow me to give you better answers and more efficiently, to boot! :)

Feel free to answer other readers’ questions, too! The more the merrier! Plus, your feedback really helps to round out any answer I give. It’s like a more complete worldview!

THE SESSION IS NOW CLOSED. THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING.

Edited @ 9:13pm (PST):   The session is CLOSED.  I will answer all remaining questions I received to this point that have not been answered.

OOOH! I just convinced The Tech Guy (aka Shaun, my boyfriend) and @labrasnore (aka Mellan) to answer questions.

If you want to ask either one a question, ask away :) I don’t guarantee either of them will ever do it again, LOL! Especially that Mellan. He’s lazy.

Dior Serum de Rouge Lipstick (Fall 2010)

Dior Serum de Rouge Fall 2010

This July, Dior will launch five new shades of Serum de Rouge ($32.00 each, 0.07 oz. each): Pearly Pink (470), Radiant Pink (560), Pink Diva (670), Ruby (870), and Plum (880). I tested four of the five new shades, but I’ve reviewed the Serum de Rouge formula before (here and here). Everything about the Serum de Rouge formula is incredibly nice–except the wear. These creamy, glossy lipsticks slide off my lips in under two hours (usually just over an hour). Given the small amount of product you get (about half the size of your average lipstick), frequent reapplication can run you through one of these a lot faster than you’d think!

The Serum de Rouge formula is soft, creamy, and very lightweight. It feels like a lipstick, but it has the glossiness of a lipstick without feeling like one. It doesn’t dry out lips, and the color pay off is quite good. Not totally opaque, but pretty rich and typically not very sheer. The formula is comparable to Cle de Peau’s Extra Silky Lipstick, but not as stellar–but very close (and $20 less!).

I did notice that the darker shades like Ruby and Plum seemed to stay on a little longer (a full two hours) and both took longer to fade (another hour or so) entirely, while lighter shades like Pearly Pink were almost entirely gone by an hour and a half.

Paul & Joe Beaute #06 Sheer Bliss Lip Gloss G

Paul & Joe Beaute #06 G Gloss

Paul & Joe Beaute #06 Sheer Bliss Lip Gloss G ($22.00 for 0.21 oz.) is a new lip gloss for summer that’s available in ten shades — from gold to nude to cherry to clear. I tested out Sheer Bliss, which is a brightened orange-melon with multicolored shimmer. It has a nice, semi-opaque color coverage, and it looks very soft and natural on lips. It looks more like a soft pinky-melon when applied to my lips, and the iridescent purple shimmer seems to catch the light the most.

There’s a modest level of glossiness, and the wear is about average for gloss for me — two to three hours (not eating/drinking). Texture wise, the gloss is medium in thickness (not ultra thin, but not heavy or thick), non-sticky, and moisturizing. It’s lightly scented with melon, but I don’t notice the scent when wearing the gloss.

RECOMMENDATION: Based on this shade, I love that the gloss looks and feels like a gloss, but you still get a healthy dose of color pay off, too, so you can easily wear it alone or layer on top of lipsticks.

Rimmel Eyeful Eye Glistener

Rimmel Eyeful Eye Glistener

Rimmel Eyeful Eye Glistener ($7.29) are great in theory, terrible in practice. I don’t usually use the word “terrible” to describe beauty products, because I don’t come across too many that merit such a negative descriptor. These are glossy pencils to give lids “vibrant, yet transparent” colour, and Rimmel says you can use it as an eyeshadow or eyeliner.

May all of the beauty gods and goddesses be at your side should you dare to use these as an eyeshadow! These slip and slide and crease and migrate all over the place. It’s like a waterslide adventure where the produce is in my lashes, glitter is on my cheeks, and my eyelids look more like an oil spill than beautiful and luminous. It looks awesome for the first few minutes, so I think for a photoshoot, they could work, if you were going for a sheer, glossy lid look. If you’re actually planning to wear these out of the house? Not so much!

Even applied over an eyeshadow base and “set” with eyeshadow, these still end up creasing within a couple of hours, and by setting with eyeshadow on top, you lose the glossy effect (so why bother?). They have a sticky texture, so eyeshadows adhere well to them, but I felt like it kind of gunked up my brush at the same time. I couldn’t find a way to make these creaseproof at all, unfortunately.

As an eyeliner, they definitely fair better, but I still found the liner migrated to the corners after two to three hours and some of the glitter fell under my eye. It’s a cool effect, and for a quick trip out, it could be worth trying. Girls Only! is a shade that could be used elsewhere on the face, like the cheeks, for a highlighter effect. It doesn’t seem to ever fully dry, so while you can get glistening cheeks, be wary of touching them. I’m not sold on using it elsewhere, to be honest, because it slips around so easily.
