I’m going to focus on reviewing the lipsticks and lipglasses in this post… Overall, I wasn’t too impressed — pretty underwhelmed with the shade range, and as “cool” as the concept is for Intricate/Utterly Discrete, neither was pigmented enough to show up well on my lips!
Intricate is an ultra sheer plummy brown with multicolored shimmer. It’s quite sheer, even with many, many layers in a swatch. It has a very frosty finish.
Pretty Please is a sheer, cool-toned, light pink with soft shimmer. This is a permanent shade.
Utterly Discrete is a sheer brown-based gloss with multi-colored shimmer (with a healthier dose of pinky-purple shimmer). It’s very much a complement to Intricate lipstick. It looks very similar to Icescape on lips, sans the milky pink.
Icescape is a sheer, milky pink base with brighter iridescent pink and purple shimmer. This is a repromote.

I picked up some MAC eyeshadows as a Christmas gift for my sister, but I don’t think I hauled anything myself this week… or maybe I just blocked it out!
I’m pretty excited for Christmas this year, just because I was really practical and may have had one of the more boring wish lists ever… but it’s all stuff I really want and need (OK, most everything). I can’t wait to get me my Christmas FEAST, too!!
Surprisingly, the eyeshadow quad and blush don’t go together quite as much as I thought they would–the blush is warmer than the quad, which is why they require more work to wear simultaneously. I think I managed to get them to work together for the most part, but they didn’t go together as easily as I anticipated.
Substitutes: MAC dupes for Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad: Vanilla, Sweet Lust, Fig. 1, Shadowy Lady; Prive = Angel; Preciousness = Luminary
For eyes, start by applying MAC Soft Ochre paint pot as your eyeshadow base all over the lid with the 249. Using the 239, apply Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (pink) on the inner third of the eyelid. Next, apply Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (medium purple) on the middle third of the eyelid and lightly blend with the inner corner. Darken the outer third of the lid with Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (dark purple) with the 239, gently brushing it into the lower crease. Next, define the crease by applying Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (dark purple) with the 226. Lightly tap and brush Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (pink) directly above the crease to soften. To finish the eyeshadow look, sweep Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (white) as a highlighter on the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Urban Decay 1999 Liner on the lower lash line, and gently tap Guerlain Jeu d’Ombrelles Eyeshadow Quad (pink) on the lower lash line with the 219. Finish by applying Lancome Plum Tease Artliner on upper lash line with the 208, and then sweeping lashes with Chanel Exceptionnel mascara (black).
For cheeks, apply Guerlain Cherry Blossom Blush to the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 129.
For lips, apply MAC Prive Lipstick first, and then layer MAC Preciousness Lipgloss for a glossy sheen.
It must be with the new year on the horizon that mass beauty retailers are rolling out new formats for shoppers in their beauty departments. Several major mass retailers, like CVS, Duane Reade, Target, and Wal-Mart are planning to remodel/improve their beauty aisles. According to WWD, we can expect to see wider aisles, less brands, and a focus on value–all to make it a better shopping experience. Even department stores like Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue are reworking their beauty floors!
What do you like to see in a beauty department?
