This October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! This program began 1985, and through its tremendous awareness efforts, the mammography rates for women 50 or older have double, and the amount of deaths related to breast cancer have declined. One of the purposes of the organization and month long awareness promotion is to encourage all women to screen and prevent breast cancer by doing breast self-examinations once a month as well as seeing a doctor and having a mammogram done regularly.

Breast cancer increases with age (rare in women under age 35), but it’s never too early to start preventative measures and talking with your doctor about getting tested and how to reduce your risk.

For more information, visit www.nbcam.org, where you can learn about the disease, its stages, prevention, treatment, and get support.

  1. This is a great post, Christine. I have several friends who have/had breast cancer and I feel strongly about supporting groups that promote breast cancer awareness.

PSA: Don’t forget to do your monthly self-exam, ladies!!!

    • Thanks, Karen! It’s so important to start doing the monthly self-exam early on, because then it’s part of a routine, and there are so many instances where early detection can save a woman from much harsher consequences!
