NARS Yu Satin Lip Pencil
NARS Yu Satin Lip Pencil

NARS Yu Satin Lip Pencil ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “shocking pink.” It’s a bright, bold shade of blue-based, medium pink with cool undertones and a soft, natural sheen. MAC Pink Pigeon is less pink, more magenta. MAC Lickable is slightly redder. NARS 413 BLKR is redder, darker, and matte. MAC Gulabi is very similar. MAC Catharina has a glossier sheen. NARS Schiap is more magenta.

The new formula is based on NARS’ Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, but the finish is satin, so it has more of a sheen, but it is still supposed to deliver “high-impact color” with a “long-wearing, vitamin-enriched formula” and “decadent moisture.” Yu is fully opaque, and it takes very little product yield full color coverage. It wore for a lengthy six and a half hours, and it did stain.  The texture is interesting; it feels creamier and softer than it actually appears on lips. Initially, I thought that was a result of all my hot lighting equipment, but all of the shades made me do a double-take in regards to the texture. Press it to your lips, and it feels almost like it’s melting against them, but look in the mirror, and it’s a lightweight, thin layer of opaque color with a very subtle sheen (no glossiness in sight). This formula felt just slightly hydrating, and it was more comfortable to wear overall compared to the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils.

The biggest downside is that it is packaged in a pencil you haven to sharpen (like NARS’ other Lip Pencils), which means product will get wasted. The waste is on par with the Velvet Mattes (the Velvet Glosses are a lot more), and it’s just a problem inherent in pencil packaging. It’s clear, though, that the industry is able to use twist-up packaging (Clinique and CoverGirl, for example).

This formula felt just slightly hydrating, and it was more comfortable to wear overall compared to the Velvet Matte Lip Pencils. For me, it's not quite as hydrating as "[drenched] in decadent moisture." It is, however, incredibly pigmented, and the texture is just soft and creamy enough.

beautiful, christine! would you say it’s anything like Urban Decay’s super saturated Crush?

I’m just happy MAC Catharina came up here! Finally a (really close) dupe to my 1st MAC love! Thank you!

I don’t care how good the product is, I can’t stand sharpening anything. What a waste, and a big mistake not to make these twist up and down:(

if revlon, elf and covergirl can make twist up lip pencils so can nars.. lol

    • Sometimes you can say, “Well, the brand is holding it in-house,” or something like that, but given that it’s spread across multiple brands (and not all under the same parent), then it should be available. I imagine they did not do so with these because all of their other pencils are in this type of packaging – it would be a big deal to change over the packaging. It doesn’t mean it’s still not an issue, but it’s a possible explanation.

I don’t mind having to sharpen a pencil like this. I find twist-up mechanisms are great for something where the texture is quite balm-like or more glossy and the application is very forgiving, but for example with the NARS matte pencils, I just don’t think I would like it if it twisted up. I prefer being able to sharpen it and get a bit more precision when I want it. Plus, I find I can easily go 3 or 4 applications with them before I need to sharpen it again, and I don’t find wastage is too excessive. Can’t wait to try these!

beautiful, christine! would you say it’s anything like Urban Decay’s super saturated Crush? sorry, for some reason my comments aren’t going through.

  7. Annie

Beautiful! How do you think the color compares to NARS Carthage?

  8. I LOVE IT. I’m not sure I’m brave enough to wear it, BUT I LOVE IT.

  9. ZG

Although I would love it even more if it was a swizzle stick lip pencil the color is still amazing. For me having to sharpen it on occasion is not a big deal as I would not be wearing this color every day.

The need to sharpen is a deal breaker for me. For what they’re charging they should be able to come up with more innovative packaging, like maybe a twist-up crayon with a built-in sharpener in the cap if you need a more precise tip (some regular liners have this feature).

Love! I don’t know if I’ll purchase it or not but the fact that I have to sharpen it is not a deal breaker for me.

  12. Wow. Love. I need this color.

Gorgeous colour, but I agree I don’t like that you have to sharpen it.

How do you find the smell of this product? I’ve noticed that the Nars eyeshadows have an unpleasing aroma.

  17. Avatar of Marina Marina

    Wow! I absolutely NEED this.

  18. Avatar of Cat Cat G

I like this one a lot! Pretty bright color!

  19. Despite the fact that there will be waste when I have to sharpen this pencil (unlike the tarte lipsurgence, revlon, etc), I had to have this color. I purchased it from the NARS site tonight :) LOVE this color! It looks fabulous on you.

  20. ellura

You skin looks gorgeous:-) I’m curious to know what foundation or powder you are using. Is that the new ambient powder?

  21. Does it look like Chanel Rouge Allure Extatique?

  22. michelle

ok, lame question, but i cannot for the life of me figure out how to twist this up or get more product out! is what you get ALL you get? i’ve had mine less than a week and have been using every day, and feel like it’s almost gone.

  23. OKAY – so I got this as soon as I saw the review and I just got it and it’s darker on me than Crush – by Urban Decay! I thought it was going to be like a Candy Yum Yum in lip pencil form but it was not that color. I have fair skin so I don’t know! :( I was so bummed and I am totally returning it. I had to double check right now to make sure I didn’t grab the wrong color. Super bummed, was expecting a bright bold pink!
