Milani Coral Cove (05) Rose Powder Blush
Milani Coral Cove (05) Rose Powder Blush

For spring, there are four new and limited shades of Milani Rose Powder Blush ($7.99 for 0.60 oz.) available. The formula is supposed to be a “luxurious matte blush” that has a “micro-milled … powder.” I’ll have reviews for all four as I work through testing them, but here’s the first one I tried…

Milani Coral Cove (05) Rose Powder Blush ($7.99 for 0.17 oz.) is described as a “bright coral.” It’s a brightened, orange-coral with a matte finish and warm undertones. Make Up For Ever #410 HD Blush (P, $26.00) is a cream product, more orange. Dior Corail Bagatelle (763) (LE, $43.00) is slightly shimmery. Chanel Intonation (69) (LE, $38.00) is a cream product, darker. MAC Autoerotique (LE, $25.00) is more muted. Tarte Crave (LE, $26.00) is pinker. NARS Day Dream (LE, $29.00) is more shimmery, pinker. Too Faced Melt Into Spring (LE) is pinker. Bobbi Brown Pink Coral (LE, $26.00) is lighter. Edward Bess Secret Affair (P, $43.00) is more shimmery. Tom Ford Beauty Flush (P, $55.00) is brighter, more shimmery. Dior Pink Glow Blush (LE) is more shimmery, more orange. See comparison swatches.

While soft, the texture is extremely dry, powdery, and feels rather chalky. It seems like there is a lot of talc in this product, and it’s absolutely something I noticed straight off the bat. If you have dry skin, the powder doesn’t adhere well–it will pick and choose the rare spots it sticks, and subsequently, it looks quite patchy and uneven. For example, my forearm is normal-to-dry, and the powder was troublesome to swatch. On my face, which is normal at the moment, I had slightly better results as more product adhered to the skin (more natural oils for the blush to stick to). This is a blush that really needed a base underneath, such as foundation, to apply decently. Despite how chalky and powdery it felt in the pan, with a good base, it did not appear powdery applied to cheeks. Coral Cove is moderately pigmented; it seems intense, but it tends to sheer out very readily due to the powderiness. It blends decently but does need some extra patience and buffing to get just right. When I tested it, the color lasted for seven hours.

  1. I love the packaging, too bad it didn’t rate higher.

  2. Carrie

Wow. The first review that wasn’t tripping over itself to sing the praises of the product.

As always, thanks for your honesty, Christine.

  3. Nazih

Phew thankfully I didn’t impulse buy this online!

  4. Cat

Noooo I wanted to love this!!! I hope one of the other ones performs better! Keeping the faith in Milani 😛

  5. CKG

    That’s a rather sweet colour

  6. Camille

Aww, I was really hoping for a good review. These caught my interest. Matte blushes are my weakness! Thanks for an honest review. Although the blush isn’t the best ever, it still looks so pretty on you–very fresh!

  7. Almost bought this! So glad I didn’t! My skin is super dry so this product isn’t for me. Thanks for the review! So many great blushes released lately….always glad to skip one!

  8. Aw, damn. I have VERY dry skin so I may have to pass on this.

Thank you, for this…I was going to pick this up cuz I’m a sucker for coral blushes and its beautifully designed – what a shame

  10. Aww :-( This product is super cute, and the colour is quite pretty (although I’d probably go for a pinker one), but I have super dry cheeks, so I’m guessing this would be a bit of a problem. Hopefully the others are better!

I spotted these yesterday at my local Walgreen’s, but the seemed kind of “off” in the pan, like they would be dry/chalky, so I decided to pass. I then went to CVS (to look for other things), but returned to Walgreen’s, and *still* decided against it. The rest of the day, I was wondering if I should just go back today and pick up Tea Rose, then I caught this post/review, LOL! I’m not planning on buying any of these…

  12. I have to say I think I like the Too Faced and Nars colors on you better than all of them, but yet I am a pink girl and those do look more pink. Orange is just not a good color on me!

  13. The texture does look powdery off the bat though not so much once applied. But a lot of similar shades to choose from esp with recent influx of new blush formulas and almost all the new ones have a similar shade!

  14. I just tried swatching these today on my arm and I had a tough time getting 3 of the 4 to show up. You’re right about the powderiness, and the difficulty on dry skin. I should’ve applied body lotion on my inner arm first. Then I applied tea rose on my face over my CC cream, and wow, it adhered so well I had much too much on my face (tea rose is the darkest, I think) and had to remove some of it with a tissue. And it does wear for hours lol.

17 grams! wow you never will run of that color for awhile!

  16. I was so excited about these blushes but now I don’t know. I’m more on the dry side and I don’t wear foundation much at all. Love the color but the formula sounds a little too iffy for me

Lovely shade and pretty design (reminds me of the Clinique Cheek Pops), but I can see that it is pretty chalky. Thanks for the review! xo

  18. love the packaging , but bad quality apparently .. i’ve had a bad experience with Milani blushes before though

  19. carly

i bought a couple of these, and yes they’re very chalky, but they applied well on my cheeks. i like how vibrant the coral one looked – almost neon! i wore it the other day when NYC had surprisingly warm weather, and it made me so excited for spring!! also….i was pleasantly surprised at the size. these things are much bigger than i had anticipated.

  20. Hum splotchy. Cute design and colour though! (Then again nobody knows how cute the design was once it’s on the face)

  21. What a pity, I missed the Rose blushes last year so I was so excited for these. My skin is normal to oily, though, so it may or may not look okay on me.

  22. Jenny

    I wanted to love these!

  23. Ok, you are GLOWING!! You look airbrushed, it seems to be the base products? I just had to comment lol it’s really noticeable!!

  24. Too bad about these, I was looking forward to trying them.

  25. Love the shade! Too bad these didn’t get a better review.

  26. Ah what a disappointment. Milani is one of those brands I really root for, I feel like they embrace the same values I find important for brands – no animal testing, makes products for all skintones, affordability yet high quality. I could see these being big hits since they’re so beautiful looking, really too bad they’re not performing well

  27. It’s too bad. They look so great in the pan. It was for the best these weren’t available near me.

BTW I love your site Christine! I found it couple of months ago and it’s my new obsession. Your reviews and swatches are so helpful.

  28. This color is so neon and pretty! It drives me crazy that they really did so poorly with the formulation. Come on, Milani… you know better than that!

  29. Christina D.

Just had to let you know, Christine, that I put this blush on this morning — and it’s still on! It actually looks really vibrant after 6 hours. I’m so pleased, and I think your suggestion to put it on right after applying my moisturizer, so it has something to cling to, helps. So much better than the Coming Up Roses blushes from last year which had zero staying power.
