Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows (Part 2)

This post includes the remaining four shades of Maybelline Color Tattoo 24 Hour Eyeshadows ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.), which are a cream/gel eyeshadow that’s supposed to yield 24-hour wear without creasing or fading and have intense color payoff.  I reviewed the formula itself here in part one.

  • Pomegranate Punk is a darkened red-burgundy with a shimmery finish. It has good color payoff and a creamy consistency. It’s similar to Benefit Stiletto. It’s slightly less red compared to MAC Idyllic. MAC Artifact seems similar, too, perhaps browner.
  • Tenacious Teal is a medium-dark blue with a silvered shimmer. It has great color payoff and applies smoothly. I’m not sure where they were going with the name, because there’s really no teal to speak of. It’s bluer than theBalm Open to Offers Olwen. It’s slightly lighter than Urban Decay Haight.
  • Too Cool is a bright metallic-finished white with subtle cool undertones. It has excellent pigmentation and a smooth feel. There are several white eyeshadows that are similar, depending on how you like your white, but it’s not a unique shade. Because it’s so pale and light, though, it will make a great base and make your eyeshadows pop more.
  • Tough as Taupe is a mauve-tinted gray with neutral-cool undertones. It’s opaque and feels very smooth. Though I don’t have it, it seems like it would be similar to MAC Stray Grey. MAC String-a-long may also be similar but I don’t own it to tell you how similar. Urban Decay Bust is browner. theBalm Come Hither Heather is lighter. MAC Interior Life is slightly darker. NARS Delphes is similar.

Please see this post for my full review! :)

FINAL THOUGHTS

They're the best performing cream eyeshadow I've tried from a budget brand, and they're an excellent cream eyeshadow, period. The formula compares best to MAC Paint Pots, especially some of the more recent finishes. The best shades are those with less shimmery finishes.

  2. Kathy says:

How do you like to apply it?? I’ve only been using my fingers but would like to find a good brush to apply it with

  3. Saffy says:

Oh my gosh, I love Pomegranate Punk.

  4. Ana Nazimuddin says:

OMG!! Sooooo pretty! I’m into unconventional cream/ gel eye colours now. These are awesome! I love Tenatious Teal & Too Cool. Brilliant colour white n bright teal/ blue. Loves!!
Too bad that Australia is very slow in getting all these gorgeous gems in their market. Here’s to online shopping.

Btw, I really love how u review all these items. I am kinda new to ur beauty blog, mebbie been here evyday since a bit more than a year ago.
Is it possible if u elaborate more on what makes each product its ranking n whats the meaning of each ranking category? E.g. What makes it an A as oppose to a C. what does product means, what makes an item to score 7 as oppose to 9.5 out of 10. Etc.
If u could explain this in a post that would be great.

    Thanx n cheers!

    • Christine says:

      Hi Ana,

I have over 50 different characteristics (positive/negative) that I look for in products, but it really depends on the individual product. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach so that I could say that 7.5 means x, y, z. That’s why I try to be specific about what is good and what isn’t about a product – if there’s criticism, that is the reason why a product has a lower rating. Please let me know if I’m failing to explain what is wrong with a product in the review, so that I can do a better job – thanks!

  5. Karana says:

I am in love with these. I only have a couple because they’re sold out of most of the colors! I can’t wait til it’s in stock again!

  6. Telma says:

I’m craving these color tattoo :D hope they come to Iceland

  7. Jo says:

    No Ingredients list? :(

  8. Kate says:

I have tough as taupe and I have major creasing issues with it. Am I the only one? It’s putting me off from buying any other colors!

    • Makaegan says:

I have Too Cool and Bold Gold and I’ve had creasing problems, as well. ((but I still really want Tough as Taupe, Bad to the Bronze and Pomegranate Punk…boo) But I expected the creasing when everyone agreed that these were dupes for the MAC paint pots. Those crease like mad on me, even with a primer. These ones are still worth it, though, because they hold up pretty well over a primer. P

      • Kymberli says:

You should try MAC’s eyeshadow base that comes in a tube like a toothpaste tube; the paint pots only last 12hrs but the tube lasts all day, even til the next day; and Maybelline or Revlon makeup stays in place well with it.

    • ADRIANA says:

Personally, I wasn’t crazy about them. They get a C in my opinion. I think painted purple and tenacious teal were the worst one’s I tried.

  9. Christy says:

I’ve heard that Pomagranate Punk is a dupe for Chanel Illusion D’Ombre Ebloui. What do you think Christine?

  10. nitnot says:

    Can I just say?

ALL THESE SHALL BE MINE, MIIIIIIIIINE

  11. Christine says:

I think my eyelids are just broken in terms of oil production… I wore Tough as Taupe yesterday w/ no primer & had awful creases by hour 5 :( .

  12. Roxanne says:

Just saw these at Walmart the other day! I might pick up Too Cool because I find that my Nyx pencil in milk creases once and awhile and doesn’t apply very evenly to my eye.

  13. Mai says:

I can tell you that I legitimately tested these for 24 hours (they really were just challenging me with the name!) and it will crease after 24 hours but I think we all knew that :P . Still though, these were amazing and lasted so well on me compared to the MUFE Aqua Creams (which lasted maybe 6 hours before creasing whereas this lasted about 12)

    • Christine says:

MUFE lasts 18 hours on me – no idea how those could possibly crease after six – the formula is drier than this one! How crazy!

      • Mai says:

Yeah I didn’t understand it either! It’s one of the reasons why I haven’t gotten anymore Aqua Creams but it could have been the shade that I got. It’s been awhile since I’ve used it but I remember being distinctly disappointed that they didn’t last longer on me.

    • Makaegan says:

Whaaat? How did you get double the wear time out of a Maybelline cream shadow compared to the MUFE? MUFE Aqua Creams are heavenly for me. I can wear those for days without them creasing or fading in the slightest. I almost can’t believe that there is any way that they could be topped…

  14. Claire says:

Where’s the swatch for tough as taupe?

  15. ... says:

tough as taupe looks sooooo creamy!!! :-)

  16. clebirun says:

I picked up Tough as Taupe on Friday on a whim, color didn’t really speak to me but I have similar shades in cream shadows for the rest of what they had in stock and I don’t have any matte creams.

I wasn’t too thrilled with the shade when swatching on my hand, the color wasn’t too appealing being on the cooler side. But on my eyes, I love it. It’s such a nice gray-purple taupe, works for me better than I expected. Worn it both days since I bought it, looks like this might end up being a favorite!

    • May says:

Yeah that’s what I thought, tough as taupe doesn’t look too nice in the jar but once you put it on your lids is another story,SOOOOOOOOO NICE! I love it

  17. Amandale says:

I just picked up “Tough as Taupe”, haven’t used it yet, but I’m glad to see it got a good review!

  18. Danielle says:

I think the only one I’ll be getting is the white. I don’t think I’ll really use the other colors as much, since they’re rather vibrant colors!

  19. Victoria says:

Tough as taupe is probably the only one out of these I’m interested in. I wish they’d make a shade like soft ochre/painterly

    • sunny says:

i think NYX has one called skintone. Haven’t tried to yet, so not sure if it creases or anything. let me know if you check it out.

  20. Marta says:

:D Love them! Specially Pommegranate, I adore metallic burgundy shades. I’m not fond of cream eyeshadows, but for that prize I could afford to experiment… I wonder when will we be able to get them in Spain though, there’s Maybelline everywhere but not all products make it here!

  21. Quinctia says:

That taupe one looks insane. I’m not a huge taupe lover like I know some folks are, but…wow, that just gives me a giant urge to try out a look with taupe as an eyeliner.

  22. Natasha says:

Wow! Some of these are a great budget alternative to paint pots! Thx Christine!

  23. Nicoco says:

Tough as Taupe looks so nice and wearable in the shots, but so much darker in the swatch! Ugh, I am so buying the Bronze/Gold ones and waiting for a more daily-friendly neutral to come out, if these come to the UK.

  24. Alix says:

Tough As Taupe wears like iron on me — I hope they come out with more matter colors in the future! I liked Audacious Asphalt but felt as though it was hard to achieve even color — the formula seemed thin and went on patchy; faded a bit after hours of wear (unlike T-A-T). Looking forward to trying a few more colors…

  25. Kristi says:

I didn’t get Pomegranate Pink, and now I want it. I do have the Tough As Taupe because I knew it would sell out fast.

  26. Madison says:

My gosh! I never thought I’d see the day.

  27. Veronica says:

    Must make black!
I wish they did a better job with the gold

  28. Jeanette says:

Thanks for the swatches Christine! I’ve been wanting to try these out. Do you think that the pomegranate color is similar to Chanel’s ebloui shade from the illusion d’ombres line?

  29. Melanie says:

Oh please please please come to Taiwan! Nothing ever comes out here…The U.S is so lucky..

  30. Joanna says:

since they are so expensive in nz, i think im gonna stick wif MUF aqua cream :>

  31. GlowyJen says:

I just bought Teal, Pomegranate, Taupe and Fierce and Tangy. I think my only hope of creating wearable works will depend on using MUFE’s Aqua Cream #13 as a lid color with one or two of the Maybelline colors in the crease and outer corner. (Taupe was the only neutral tone available where I found these.) I

I don’t have a huge collectoin, but I can’t find anything that the taupe color quite compares to. I’m sure it’s not unique, but it’s unusual – at least in my experience!

  32. Hilary♥ says:

Can’t wait for this colors to be released in EU as well, they look so gorgeous! And since they’re very price friendly too, I think I’ll go for the whole collection.

  33. Alyssa says:

Christine, lots of people are obsessed with NYX Milk, so would you consider Too Cool (the white one) to be sort of a dupe but in a paint pot-ish form?

  34. amanda says:

Make Up For Ever #17 Aqua Cream
and Maybelline Pomegranate Punk look sisters to me. I was going to get the MUFE one but I will buy pomegranate punk instead. These are going to challenge the higher end brands because of the price.

  35. Cherokee says:

I have the Tough as Taupe because I don’t own anything like it. I paired it with Nutty eyeshadow from Wet n’ Wild and it did crease a little but only on one eye and I used Two Faced primer. I think I had too much on the eye that creased. A little goes a long way. The color is beautiful. I am gonna try it again with NARS primer because I think it works really good with creamy products.

  36. Chantal says:

    Thanks Christine!~

Loving the taupe one!~…I really hope i can find it here in Canada..They have maybelline here..so hopefully fingers crossed!~..

I too hope that they come out with some lighter..no brainer shades..Shades you can simply apply in a hurry..
And hopefully some more matte ones..too..Would be nice if they come out with the same shades..but matte..

Did you find they had the consistency of the Clinique eyebases..?..which are kind of moussy texture..and very light weight..

    Thanks again!~:D

  37. Becky says:

These look AMAZING!! I’m new to cream shadows and have been hesitant to try because the MAC ones are pricier than I’m willing to spend on something that I’m not sure will work for me. I will definitely try the Maybelline ones though! I have a question, though: If you want to use these as an actual shadow, not a base, how would you blend it with another cream shadow, or with a powder shadow? A tutorial or something like that would be really helpful if you are able to do that! Thanks!!!

  38. Sabeen says:

Hi I was wondering if you knew if these will be release in the UK?

  39. Destiny says:

I am sooooo impressed with these cream eyeshadows by Maybelline. I just bought one in the colour ‘Pomegranate Punk’ and I am in LOVE. Can’t wait to pick up a few more. They are very similar to MAC paint pots! Worth every penny!

  40. Rebecca says:

I bought them today and I am returning them you have to put on to much to get a good color payoff!!!!!!!!

  41. Katelin says:

I have bad to the bronze and tenacious teal. The bronze is gorgeous and lasts all day on me without primer. The teal is gorgeous and has great payoff, but I think I’ll be using it as a liner. I love these, and I love all the brights for spring! In my small town, they were a bit hard to find, though. :(

  42. annie says:

Hey im in love with these just pruchased them at Walmart actually and I found out they are $5.48 in case anyone wanted to know. I LOVE how the colors pop ,they do remind me of the Mac paint pots but I couldn’t resist. I bought Pomegranate Punk,Bold Gold, Bad to the bronze and Audacious asphalt and they really to swatch pretty to me can’t wait to wear them!!

  43. Leah says:

The Tough as Taupe shade is very similar to Urban Decay Revolver, or at least I think so. Putting Revolver over Tough as Taupe is like sealing in the Maybelline cream shadow with a powdery coating in the same shade.

  44. j says:

why is there two swatches for each? Does one have primer and the other one not?

    • Christine says:

      Hi J,

No, there’s no primer – I do not swatch with primer :) The left swatch is a heavy swatch, and the right swatch is very little product and blended out, since many use a cream eyeshadow as a wash of color.

  45. tanveer says:

I wish they’d launch these in India too, really soon. I so want to try these, really soon :D

  46. sarah says:

what are we supposed to use to apply these eye shadows? fingers or brush? seems like it’s hard to pick up with brushes.

  47. Cat says:

I found them at WalMart for $5.85! I got Bold Gold, Pomegranate Punk and Audacious Asphalt! I still want like three others but WalMart didn’t have them all.
