Make Up For Ever Star Lab Shine Lipglosses

Make Up For Ever Lab Shine Lipglosses: Star Finish

For spring (although, these have been available at Make Up For Ever boutiques since last June), Make Up For Ever launches new Lab Sine Lip Gloss ($18.00 for 0.09 oz.) in three finishes with 35 shades in total.

I reviewed the Metal Lab Shines several months ago, when I first purchased the Lab Shines. My intention was always to review all of the ones I purchased (which is all except for three, which they did not have in-stock at the time), but I was never able to get through lip swatches for all of the new glosses. I do still hope to do lip swatches for them in the future, but for now, please enjoy swatches and photos.

The Star Collection includes 14 shades and contains Make Up For Ever’s Star Powder. This finish is supposed add a lot of shine with iridescent mother-of-pearl. All of the lip glosses have both hyaluronic acid and Camelina oil for help moisturize lips and improve elasticity. It is a non-sticky gloss with a slight, tropical fruit kind of scent. The scent is not overwhelming, and it doesn’t smell synthetically sweet. They are packaged in thick, clear tubes with a black cap and a brush-type applicator.

The shades included in this finish are: S0 (pearly nude), S2 (pearly light beige), S4 (pearly pink beige), S6 (pearly peach), S8 (pearly ruby red), S10 (pearly caramel), S12 (pearly praline), S14 (pearly blackcurrant), S16 (pearly raspberry), S18 (pearly rosewood), S20 (pearly violet), S22 (pearly candy pink), S24 (pearly coral), and S26 (pearly electric rose). All of the shades are featured in this post except #S2, which was not available for purchase when I purchased the rest of these.

  • S0 is a sheer, pearly champagne beige with pale champagne shimmer.
  • S4 is a sheer, pearly rose pink with soft yellow undertones and champagne shimmer.
  • S6 is a sheer, coral with peach and pale gold shimmer.
  • S8 is a semi-sheer, blue-based red with soft gold shimmer.
  • S10 is a sheer, burnt brown with slight orange tones and beige shimmer.
  • S12 is a sheer, neutral brown with gold and champagne shimmer.
  • S14 is a sheer, darkened plum with pink and pale gold shimmer.
  • S16 is a sheer, muted, medium fuchsia pink with icy pink and champagne shimmer.
  • S18 is sheer, rosy brown with pink and teal shimmer.
  • S20 is a sheer, milky cool-toned pink with gold shimmer.
  • S22 is a sheer, soft pink with subtle cool undertones and pale gold and pink shimmer.
  • S24 is a sheer pinked coral with subtle gold shimmer.
  • S26 is a semi-sheer dark fuchsia pink with fuchsia iridescence.

Star Lab Shines have a very smooth texture; they’re thick without being goopy, but they are very comfortable to wear. They’re some of the more moisturizing glosses I have tried, and with these lighter shades, I get about two to three hours of wear. I’d love ‘em more if they wore longer (three to four is average for me, two is below), but I do love that they have a huge shade range (that’s permanent!).

My big complaint is that these only have 0.09 oz. in them–the average lipgloss has about 0.20 oz., and even Make Up For Ever’s Fascinating Lipgloss contained that much, but they halved the size and kept the price. I understand these are a completely different formula and contain their various powders (Diamond, Star, and Metal), but whether that really merits what is in essence over a 50% price increase is up for debate.

If you want to know more about how products are evaluated, read out Rating System FAQ! :)

  • Product: 27/30
  • Value: 6/10
  • Ease of Use: 4/5
  • Packaging: 4/5

FINAL THOUGHTS: These are very nice gloss basics; they’re non-sticky, comfortable to wear, and there are lots of shades to choose from. The Star finish is probably my favorite, because it has a nice level of sparkle and iridescence that’s not glittery or over the top. These are generally on the sheerer side, though, but deposit more color than the Diamond finish.

Product & Review FAQ

Where can I purchase Lab Shine Lip Gloss? How much is it?

Sephora.com, $18 each.

Is it limited edition?

No.

Why aren't there lip swatches?

As much as I would love to do lip swatches, I just haven't been able to get to these. Since they're now available for purchase through Sephora, I wanted to at least show you some swatches on skin than nothing at all. I hope to provide lip swatches in the future but could not give you a timeframe and thus would not tell you to rely on me for those at this time.

  1. I really like some of these shades! I might have to go get a few of them next time I run into Sephora

  2. Veronica

Yikes! Most of my sample lipglosses even contain more product than that!

Arrhghhh these look gorgeous D: I do wish MUFE would have put out some cremes, though – I’ve never been much of a glitter gal. But, then again, I guess that’s what the Glossy Full Couleur line would be for!

P.S. I can’t imagine how long it would take you to do lip swatches for all of them! That’s one heck of daunting task…

  4. Suzanne

    These aren’t that bad…

  5. Julia

Awww I really wanted to see them on the lips :[

  6. Purple Butterfly

These shades are pretty even though I am not a MUFE fan… I may try some lipgloss (pink, of course) and the S0 is pretty. S20, S22, S4, S8 are pretty, as well.

    S6 looks really pretty!

  10. I love the first three colours!

  11. Rebecca

Do you have any idea how s26 compares to If It’s Pink Dazzleglass from the A+O collection?

  12. Jen

S8 is the only one looking good to me.

  13. hmm, I don’t think they look all that different from drugstore brands…

  14. Those are really pretty but pretty expensive!

  15. Marina

Ahh these are so pretty! But i had a good sniff at them in the store (i always do as i’m sensitive to smells) and they stink something horrible :( what a bummer, i’d really love to have a couple.

  16. Hey, i’m a brazilian and i love your blog! I’m going to new york in july and i wanna know, if you know, if the 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils 15 Year Anniversary Collection Urban Decay will be available until there, you have my e-mail!
    Thank you

So if they are half the size but the same price, shouldn’t they be a 100% price increase rather than 50%, or is my maths wrong?

S6 reminds me a bit of Strange Potion Lipglass, maybe peachier? And S16 makes me think of watermelons, yum!

    • But they are using different ingredients – which is why I just said over 50% increase, because it’s definitely an increase, but we don’t know if the quality/usage of ingredients also affected the cost, because the Star, Metal, and Diamond powders are there, and they are pretty pricey on their own!

  18. Carrie

Pretty, but it’s hard to get excited knowing the price of these.

OTOH, if I hit up IMATS and they have the 60% discount, I’d snatch up a few.

  19. Jennifer

Ooooh I have a Stila lipgloss that I LOVE that is discontinued and I think that the S4 just might be a good dupe for it. I hope so. I love the color so much. :) Thanks for the swatches Christine. :)

  20. those lip gloss are cute. i want to try one, i should check them at sephora.

  21. Oooo! I want all of these!

  22. Sydney

I think I may check out S4, because it looks like Strange Potion lipglass from the Venomous Villains collection (and I didn’t realize I wanted the lipgloss until I couldn’t get it anymore), and S26 looks like my Extra Amps dazzleglass, so I may check that out, too (I don’t know what the point would be, because I have a dupe, but who can get about bright pink lipglosses with sparkle!?) and S24, too! So yeah, those three stick out in my eye, so I may get the three of those. Actually S20 and S22 look pretty, too… ugh, way too much temptation! Lol.
