MAC Bloom On Pro Longwear Eyeshadow
MAC Bloom On Pro Longwear Eyeshadow

Three Pinks to Think Twice About

This review focuses on three new shades of MAC Pro Longwear Eyeshadows ($21.00 for 0.11 oz.) from the latest launch, Office Hours: Bloom On (light burnt rose), Endless Passion (mid-tone rose), and More Amour (mid-tone red).

Bloom On is a pale rose-beige with neutral undertones and a matte finish. The color applies rather sheer; I had to layer it just so the swatch would show up. It requires a lot of product on the lid, and I had to use it over a primer to boost the impact (or else it wasn’t visible). It was very dusty. MAC Pink Frontier has a stronger yellow undertone and a shimmery finish. MAC Hush is lighter.

Endless Passion is a pinky-mauve with a soft, satiny finish. It had so-so color payoff when layered, but it was on the softer side, so it was prone to disappearing if you made any sweeping motions. It just didn’t sit well on the lid–imagine a “Do Not Disturb” sign hanging off your lid when you wear this. This shade also darkened when it was applied (compared to how it looked in the pan). NARS Douce France is lighter. Wet ‘n’ Wild Bright Idea is more shimmery. MAC Rose is a smidgen lighter and more shimmery.

More Amour is a muted pink-red with a matte finish. This was the most pigmented shade out of all the ones I’ve seen so far. It was also the least powdery, though it still had a fair amount of dustiness. MAC Passionate is a bit brighter. MAC Sushi Flower is quite similar.

Here’s how MAC describes these: “A unique longwearing Eye Shadow with a silky, creamy texture formulated for maximum colour impact. Easily blendable and buildable; lids are visibly smooth no matter how intense the application. Lasts 8 hours.” These should have a great texture, be nicely pigmented and blendable, while wearing for eight hours.

Out of these three shades, More Amour was the only one that was visible after six hours of wear (both over a primer and directly on bare lids); Bloom On and Endless Passion both looked faded after three hours and were missing in action after six hours.  These three had the same dusty, powdery texture that makes them difficult to use.  When you apply the color, it’s barely there, and when you attempt to layer or build the color up, it disappears very easily. The more you attempt to build the color, the more powdery it looks, which resulted in lids looking kind of dry.  More Amour may have been the best out of a bad hand, but it’s still just a so-so eyeshadow. It was somewhat powdery, and it faded substantially after six hours.

To reiterate:  when MAC released this formula originally (about a year ago), it was a lovely formula that was nicely pigmented, blendable, and long-wearing (seriously, they lasted 12-hours without a primer). The texture of these doesn’t feel like the ones from last year. They feel like different formulas entirely.

If you like sheer eyeshadow, you might consider purchasing some feathery brushes--most eyeshadows can be used sheerly, with the right tool. Because these disappear after six hours (as in, nothing remains), even as sheer eyeshadow, I could not recommend them.

The *only* one in the entire launch I was even considering was More Amour, but for $20 USD, I expect more. I have a fairly large collection of red eyeshadows already, so I think I can afford to skip this one.

MAC is so crappy lately /:.

Looking for “Bloom On” is like looking for Waldo. Except you can usually find Waldo eventually…

LOL. I know your heart is taken by Francois, but please…oh please…Kafka, MARRY ME?! :P

Only if you promise not to smear me with Taj Mahal if we ever have a fight! :D Oh, and Miss J, if François ever decides to change teams, I’m leaving you. LOL!

  4. At first I was like ‘Ouch an F?’ and then I looked at it on your eye and it made sense.

The color selections are just *strange*. These could all be blushes! Although with this kind of performance, who would use them for either?

    • Riana

I thought the same thing, it gives the impression there’s no real idea or planning behind their launches.

The quality of the shadows doesn’t suggest something you could wear during ‘office hours’ without touch up.

The colors aren’t something most people could wear during ‘office hours’

What exactly is the name in reference to? Because it seems like MAC had some leftovers from planning and just shoved them into this launch and slapped any old name on them.

I was thinking the same thing! Its like there were all these sheer pink colors sitting around with nowhere to go and they became a collection!

The colors themselves are appropriate for the office, IMO, including the red (I worked in a bank with a *very* strict dress-code, and I wore red often), depending on ones coloring & application/placement. The issue I have with these is that they all look like they should be sold at Claire’s.

  6. Riana

The only one I was interested in was Endless Passion but if it doesn’t even show up on your skin tone it’d go ghost on mine.

Geez…MAC is really trying to knock itself out of the ‘respectable brand’ category isn’t it? These days the quality is so bad its a bit of a joke.

  7. Alexandra

I’ve always wanted to try MAC’S shadows… I never jumped on the bandwagon I guess. I’m more of an Urban Decay girl but now I guess I’ll stick to what I love. All I’ve been hearing about MAC lately is that their product quality has gone severely down.

:( They had a lot of colors I wanted to try. Guess I’ll have to search elsewhere.

    • Me too. I’ve always wanted to try some MAC shadows but I’m a UD girl at heart and I just don’t want to branch out if the quality is going to be so sucky!

    • Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Leticia Leticia

Hi Alexandra! It’s unfortunate that the eyeshadows MAC has released lately are disappointing, but I’d really recommend you to check out their permanent line – whether you like neutrals or bolder colors, they do have a lovely and high quality range to choose from. As a MAC fan, it sure hurts to see what they´ve been doing lately, but I still believe their permanent line is worth it :)!

  8. Mietta

‘Maximum color impact?’ hahah another flop from MAC. I used to LOVE MAC’s collections. I don’t really go there to buy anything any more due to their collections really turning me off their brand. I’ve moved on to Estee Lauder, their parent company, YSL, Chanel and Illamasqua (which I will ALWAYS buy from.) And really…who would wear a red/pink eye-shadow at work??

  9. Andrea

Seriously, at this rate I don’t think I’ll ever purchase from another MAC collection.
Here’s hoping the permanent range products don’t start going down the drain too (like how Carbon keeps getting worse). I wish MAC was still a Canadian owned and operated company, Estee Lauder is running them into the ground.

  10. Profile wp-user-avatar wp-user-avatar-60 alignnone photo of Sarah Sarah

these are just terrible! MAC really needs to stop launching a new collection each month because they keep getting worse and worse! I would be so much happier with three good sized collections come out a year that are much better quality and are permanent. The quality is seriously suffering. Longwear? Yeah right!

I also have to agree that these three look like blush colors.

    • Veronica

Mac, like other businesses, come out with collections to anniversary the previous seasons’ collections. In order to make or exceed their earnings last year, they cannot come out with 3 collections a year.

  11. Madina

I think nearly everyone will just use these as blush.

  12. Jazz

More amour is the best one….it would look good with a brown shadow. I am trying to figure out how these colors are office appropriate, but then again I did wear blue eyeshadow to work today…

  13. Whew–glad I’m not the only one that thought so. I actually just played with these last night. First of all, the colors were BORING. Secondly, they were really hard and not very pigmented at all. I was appalled.

  14. KK

I do like the colors in this collection, but I’m not a big fan of the finishes and obviously of the quality. I don’t like really loud or vibrant colors on myself (I like looking at them on you though!) so my favorite collections are the ones with lots of neutrals and more muted, wearable shades, like the idea behind this collection. I just can’t justify spending the money on them when the quality isn’t there, though. It’s a shame because the more I looked into the contents of this collection, the more excited I was.

  15. Which one of these are permanent as you have the description from Part 1 still? Not that I’m buying I’m just curios.

  16. blueraccoon

This is truly pathetic. I’m not the biggest fan of MAC but it really hurts to see them come out with something so disappointing.

  17. Looks like this whole collection is a disappointment. Sad :-(

  18. Laurie

Awwww, this is so sad. I was so looking forward to this collection but didn’t indulge until seeing reviews because of the high price point. If I’m going to spend $21.00 on a single shadow it better be a fabulous and special color and a formula that blends easily and stays put. This sounds like a failure on all points. Thank you for the honest review!
