MAC Nocturnals/Green & Teal Set
MAC Nocturnals/Green & Teal Set

MAC Nocturnals/Green & Teal Set ($32.50 for 0.55 oz.) contains three pigments and two glitters. Each pigment contains 0.09 oz. of product, while each glitter vial contains 0.14 oz. of product. None of MAC’s glitters are listed as eye safe, and 3D Gold also not lip safe. This set contains $37.80 worth of pigments and $39.20 worth of glitters for a total value of $77.00. You could try using the glitters in nail polish, in the hair, and on the body. These are loose glitters, so you will need some sort of adhesive base or mix to have them stick to skin. I applied the glitters over Fyrinnae’s Pixie Epoxy for swatches. I wish MAC would test or use a grade of glitter that was eye safe, especially if they’re going to include them in consumer kits like this.

Reflects Gold is described as a “white glitter that flashes gold.” It looks like a silvery-white at one angle, then more of a golden champagne at another angle. It is one of the finer glitters that MAC has. It’s part of the permanent PRO range. I don’t have another glitter in this color that I can recall, though I’m sure it is something dupable by brands with full glitter ranges (Lit, OCC, etc.).

Old Gold is described as a “high frosted tarnish gold.” It’s a medium-dark, green-ish gold over an olive brown base with a frosted, metallic finish. It had good color payoff applied both wet and dry, though it was more metallic when applied with a dampened brush. It wore well for seven and a half hours, and then it started to show signs of creasing. It’s part of the permanent range. Too Faced Twinkle (LE) is less olive. NARS Iskandar (P, $25.00) is a cream product. Fyrinnae Lucky Charmed (P, $6.80) is greener. See comparison swatches.

Deep Blue Green is described as a “rich deep bluish green.” It’s a bluish-teal over a blackened base with a frosted finish. It is a bit darker and only semi-opaque when applied dry, and when applied with a dampened brush, it’s more metallic, smoother, and opaque. It wore well for eight hours. It’s part of the permanent range. Dior Bonne Etoile (384) #4 (LE) is lighter. Sephora Collection Midnight Swim (16) (P, $13.00) is less frosted. Urban Decay Hijack (LE, $18.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches.

Just Before Dawn is described as “warm taupe frost.” It’s a medium-dark, gray-leaning taupe with subtle warm undertones and a soft, satin finish. Applied dry, it had fairly good color payoff but appeared browner and lighter. Applied damp, it was grayer and fully pigmented. It lasted for almost eight hours without fading or creasing. Disney by Sephora Jaq (LE) is warmer. MAC Romance Me (LE, $15.00) is lighter. MAC Keep Your Cool (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. bareMinerals Wanderlust (P) is similar.See comparison swatches.

3D Gold is described as a “sparkly chunky gold.” It’s more like a golden chartreuse glitter with a mix of iridescent glitter that gives a rainbow of color as it flashes around. It’s very, very pretty, and it’s such a shame it isn’t eye or lip safe. I know that many MAC artists use the glitters on the runways, and I’ve included a shot of using it on the lid, but I get too nervous using it myself.

Note, there are no ratings for glitter because it’s not a product that really fits the criteria we use in The Glossover at this time.

  1. To be honest, even if I know they are not safe I use my glitters (at least the red ones I have) on my eyes and so far I never had any problem. Or at least not more than with some other eye safe products.

  2. Al least this set has Reflects Gold Pigment. The Reflects glitter are such nice products.

  3. Seeing the glitter on your lid made me nervous too! I like the look, but we wouldn’t want your pretty eyes to become irritated.

    • I actually removed it afterwards, because it just makes me wayyy too nervous and even regular glitter in eyeshadow, when it falls out, irritates my eyes like crazy sometimes. So no worries :)

  4. Deep Blue Green is stuuuunning!

  5. OMG! I pretty much just want this for Just Before Dawn.

  6. I feel the same way you do about non-eye safe glitter. i’m always afraid I’ll scratch my cornea. I wore a pair of lashes recently where the glitter came off in my eyes as I was wearing them and I had to stop what I was doing, remove the lashes and flush my eyes. My eyes were sore for hours.

  7. Becca

Can’t wait to see the others!!! I want all of them!!

  8. Just Before Dawn looks very pretty! But is it definitely in the permanent line? cause I can’t seem to find it anywhere…
    Thank you Christine!

  9. Emm

Is the deep blue green a repromote? Because I swear it was in a pigment set I got during Xmas a few years ago.

  10. Jo

Just Before Dawn is permanent?! Do you know when this will be? Can’t find it on their site. Thanks!!

  11. I’ve given up with MAC pigments and got rid of mine. For me they aren’t worth the hassle and potential spillage. Lovely look on you, though!

Sorry if this has already been addressed, but are these vials full sized?

  13. I like the shades in here, but I already own Old Gold, so I don’t think it’s worth it for me.

  14. Lisa

Sad part is with all these sets is they contain glitters that I would never use. I’d rather buy makeup Geek’s pigments for cheaper :(

  15. I was trying to remember what 3D Gold reminded me of. It reminds me of UD Stargazer (Moondust line).

  16. Never have I loved a MAC Holiday item/pack so much. These pigments are amazing. and they come with glitter!

  17. ok this one is mine thanks Christine for the awesome look. I was unsure about the others but this one only has one chunky glitter i have old gold but its a good deal still. And lovely all around

  18. zainab

I’m so tempted by this, even though I hate the messiness of loose pigments and almost never use glitter. I wish I had more occasions where full on glitter-fest makeup was appropriate…

Oooh, usually I’m not a huge fan of pigment sets like this, but I love the colors in this one. I may actually have to give this one a look. :3

  20. Miss J

I really wish glitter was deemed safe for eyes. I know so many wear it without issue, but I panic every time I put it on, lol. I used one of the reflects glitters for my Halloween makeup, and even though I used a sticky glitter glue, I was still super paranoid something bad would happen. At least I had on some big lashes to catch the fallout!

  21. Bernice

    Your eye look is beautiful!

  22. If I didn’t already have a huge jar of Old Gold I would totally get this, it’s such a great value!

  23. Avatar of Anna Anna

I love the colors in this set, but the glitters kinda ruin it for me. I already have sensitive eyes, so I definitely don’t want to risk anything that’s listed as “not eye-safe” and I don’t really use body glitter or anything

  24. Ugh this Pigment & Glitter set in particular is making me shiver! I find these colors the most versatile, and completely agree on some of the previous sentiments on glitter use. I usually don’t hesitate to use even craft glitter near the eye area, however from the photos alone I’d be weary of the large size of these glitters. In any case, this set is definitely on my wish list – can’t wait!

  25. I’m disappointed that this is called the green/teal collection when it’s mostly golds and browns, especially when they made a black/gold collection with these sets already. The one dark blue green isn’t enough to make the whole collection.

  26. Starlynn

I use the Reflects Teal MAC glitter on my eyes all the time! I have really bad allergies & wear contacts. I get this glitter in my eyes constantly with no problem. Although I do own sealants, I do not use them with the MAC glitters, just over paint pots & shadow. I think they must just warn as a precaution.

  27. Rabia

Omg! I love the 3 D gold glitter!
It’s so beautiful I missed it last year and this year I purchased 3 boxes. I have a question how do u make the glitter stick to your eyes ? If with glue isn’t it uncomfortable ? I am just wondering which nocturnal mac kits did u purchase which ones u like the best ? Any comments on brush sets ? Thanks!!!
