Any little bits of skin will mess things up. Then I apply - I even use the the applicator. I do tend to use two thin layers (it layers and deepens in color each time). I try to wait for the first layer to dry before I do the second one. I remember having a really hard time with it the first few times last time but it's definitely one of those practice makes perfect things. I'm so sad it isn't working for more people!
