MAC Devil's Food Lipstick
MAC Devil’s Food Lipstick

MAC Devil’s Food Lipstick ($15.00 for 0.10 oz.) is described as a “glossy deep plum [with a] frost [finish].” It’s a burgundy-brown with barely-there ruby red micro-shimmer. Maybelline Plum Paradise is redder, brighter. Chanel Baroque is less red, browner. MAC Approaching Storm is darker, less shimmery. MAC Odyssey has a pinker shimmer/iridescence.

It has semi-sheer to semi-opaque color payoff, and it applies somewhat evenly, but it pulls and settles into lip lines. This one wore that way, too, where the color migrated and gathered into the creases of the lip while it wore. Devil’s Food lasted just over four hours on me, which is about average. It was a bit drying, though, which wasn’t surprising, given the consistency wasn’t as creamy as it could have been and did tug slightly at lips during application.

A lot of what was disappointing about this shade was how much it settled and pulled into lip lines, which just made the color look uneven and patchy.

Such a beautiful colour!! Will have to pass on this though, hate wearing lipstick that’s uncomfortable :(

  2. That’s a cute lipstick but dark lippies like this age me.

  3. Marisa

I anticipated this result from the preview swatches on Friday. Luckily there are a ton of other, better options for this color. You save me so much money Christine! Thank you! (Except for when something I thought I would hate looks so awesome, ahem, NARS Barrow Street.) :D

  4. Ms.Laura

I have to admit these darker shades are making me nostalgic for the 90s. This used to be my go-to color in high school. As for today, I most likely wouldn’t wear it.

  5. rachel

i used to be able to wear these darker colors in high school too, but as i get older they don’t look so good on me anymore ..sigh

    • Beck

Why dont you think they dont look good anymore please elaborate if you dont mind? I wanted to try this out is it going to look rediculous on someone pushing 30? I guess im kind of clueless About age appropriate colors?

  6. Too bad, I already have Boyfriend Stealer, I don’t want another lipstick with a beautiful color but uneven.. Even if this is not as uneven as BF! Thanks Christine ^^

How does this compare to MAC’s Sinister?

  8. Julie

I’d imagine that this lipstick would work better as a layering product rather than on it’s own. I would love to see it layered on top of a dark plum, purple, or red lipliner, or maybe even a dark brown…It’s a shame that it doesn’t wear so well though.

I still really love this! I’ll use a primer/ balm/liner… what ever I need to do. I think it’s worth the trouble for me lol. Reminds me of a discontinued Revlon shade that I used up completely. Thanks for the review!

I think it looks very nice on you. Would be a pretty and mature color. I actually have been using a MAC lip liner that I have and got a few years ago to color in my lips. I put on Mac’s lip primer first and then color my lips in. I am kind of getting into a dark lipstick trend on my lips. Using a primer is a must with anything helps color last longer, helps cancel out the natural color of your lips, and creates a smooth application.

I love the color, but disappointed in the quality. I have been seeing this a lot from MAC lately. They need to step it up and get their products back to the quality they used to be.

  12. Cait

This is the colour I am most excited for besides the nude. I like frosts and I have been wanting a plumy-black-red! Thanks for the review! I know I am going to buy it anyway as these are not uncomfortable for me and the colour is just so pretty!

  13. Sheila

Hhhmm…This kind of reminds me of MAC Fetish Lipstick (permanent) but Fetish had a better color payoff.

  14. Francesca

what foundation do you wear? it’s beautiful!

  15. VickyM

This color suits you very much. It is a nice lipstick but it looks too much like how Mac Betty Oh, Oh, Oh looks on me so I wouldn´t buy it.

  16. L

This colour looks amazing on you Christine. Too bad the formula wasn’t better. :/

  17. dia

Are there any dark, sheer lip products that *don’t* settle into lip lines? It seems to be a universal issue.

    • The more opaque + more matte they are, usually they can work better. But anything that can be a bit sheer has a greater tendency to do it – but not all of them do it as severely as this!

  18. This color isn’t a bad as I expected haha. But it looks more autumnal.

  19. xamyx

This reminds me of L’Oreal Spice, although it’s a bit sheerer.

  20. Charvahon

It reminds me a bit of mac diva

  21. Marina

    I have a question for Christine…

With all of the lipstick you have to swatch and test for longevity, how do you prevent your lips from getting dry and chapped? I can’t even wear lipstick once without having to go heavy on balm the next day. :(

  22. Rebecca

Such a shame because it’s a beautiful color!

  23. MERI

    oh my, :( yuck

  24. Yoli

This is really SAD, it looked so promising esp. from MAC’s swatch on-line! :( I was hoping of a merlot color, not as glossy though, perhaps a matte. I love matte lippies. :) Oh, well…def a pass for me!

  25. Amy

How do you find this compares to Oh, Oh, Oh (MAC Archie’s Girls)? They look similar. I love this colour but already have Oh, Oh, Oh.

  26. I like the color a lot, but the patchiness is a shame.
