MAC Big Bounce Shadow: Photos/Swatches, Part 1

Make sure you read my original, in-depth review for these eyeshadows here. This post only contains photos and swatches of the first half of the shades that will launch on May 5th. Each retails for $16.50. I just did heavier swatches here (I used whatever stuck to the spatula I used to fish each shade out), but these can go from sheer to medium coverage.

  • Black Diamond is a dark charcoal black with teal and silver shimmer.
  • The Cool Elite is a brightened white with a shimmery finish.
  • Count Your Assets is a cool-toned purple with silver and gray.
  • Extra Charged is a medium-dark green with teal leanings.
  • Free as Air is a metallic, light sky blue with iridescent silver shimmer.
  • Good Fortune is a light, airy pink with red and gold shimmer.
  • Impeccably Rich is a metallic, muted yellow gold with gold and coppered gold micro-glitter/shimmer. It has a coarser texture than the others, which is why I think it might have more glittery particles than regular shimmer.
  • Luxury Touch is a raspberry plum with red undertones.

MAC Big Bounce Shadow Swatches, Photos (Part 1)

D-
It's really too bad that there is so little wear time when worn alone (Reward Yourself had maybe a half hour of nice wear, but the others I tried were done in fifteen minutes), because I feel like these don't deserve such a low score. If you intend to set with powder shadow, these perform much, much better and would see a B- rating instead.

Product & Review FAQ

Where can I purchase Big Bounce Shadow? How much is it?

MAC Cosmetics on May 5th, $16.50 each.

Is it limited edition?

Yes.

Any dupes?

For Black Diamond, try MUFE #1 Aqua Cream. For The Cool Elite, try MUFE #4. For Count Your Assets, I can't think of anything close (it's much cooler-toned and gray compared to most other purple cream shadows). For Extra Charged, try MUFE #22 (greener). For Free as Air, try Buxom Husky (I don't own it, though to be sure). For Good Fortune, try Benefit Flatter Me. For Impeccably Rich, try MUFE #11 (yellower) or Benefit Tattle Tale (lighter, less metallic). For Luxury Touch, try Benefit Stiletto or MUFE #17.

  1. These look like they could be super messy!

  2. Avatar of Deb Deb

Well, it’s a total shame these shadows are a bust, because you’ve photographed them beautifully!

  3. Brittani

Are these swatched with a brush? Because I do know you said they perform better when you use them with a brush (242).
And did you layer these swatches?

  4. Rachel

looking at your swatch, the cool elite looks A LOT like ELF’s cream liner in Ivory

  5. Avatar of Lily lily

Woah! those texture close-ups are def make-uo porn! Keep up the good work!

  6. UGHHHHH why, oh why do these have to be so sheer and liquidy and ugh? I would absolutely die if these were paint pots, or just thicker in general. Those colors are wonderful… especially the green and blue!

    • Me

I was so excited when I thought these were going to be like paint pots. My wallet thanks Mac, though, since I will be skipping on ALL of these.

    • Sylvia

AGREED! If they were paint pots they would be perfect and I’d probably go broke buying all of them haha. The colors are stunning… What a shame they turned out to receive such bad reviews…

  7. RedWeatherTigerD

These photos are stunning, Christine! It is a darn shame the shadows are crappy.

  8. marcy

whoa, a D for MAC! not surprised, though. I think these colors would’ve been wildly successful as PAINT POTS as opposed to this strange, new, sub-par formula.

  9. Rachael

The colors are amazing and your pictures are beautiful! Its too bad the formula is garbage.

  10. FC

A D rating?! Wow! But these really do look very watery and “washed out”. Definitely passing…no doubt about that. It’s just a shame because these could have been really amazing products. =\

  11. tawny

i kind of had a feeling these would be a miss. the texture looks so odd. too bad though. there’s so many pretty colors :(

  12. Amadia

    Sooo pretty…

A weird part of me wants to own these just so I can -look- at the pretty colors sitting there in their jars, lol. I will settle for the pictures. But, still. =p

Even my non-makeup-wearing partner was wowed by the gorgeous texture and colors.

  13. Laura Amaral

the colours look amazing but the product itself, i think i’ll pass.

  14. teresa

Christine! i LOVEEE the macro shots of the shadows, it sends shivers down my spine how they photograph so beautifully. I think I’ll buy one just to give Big Bounce a shot.. :)

  15. I have a feeling that these would dry up super quick, too. Good thing I’m passing on these.

  16. They look so gorgeous in the jar, but I just can’t get over how disappointed I am. The face that these NEED to be set with powder kills it for me. I think there are plenty of options a lot cheaper that will give the same results, not necessarily in a jar.

  17. Avatar of Cate Cate

OMG Impeccably Rich … MUST HAVE!!

  18. I ended up ordering “Rich Thrills” and “Luxury Touch.” Whenever a product is strange, it makes me want to work with it all the more… Mix it with other products (liners, powders, paints, etc.) to see what happens. I’m determined to find the inner beauty in these frackers!

    • I think you’ll like ‘em! They DO work well as long as you set them with powder (from my testing) as far as using them as eyeshadows… so basically, as eyeshadow bases, they can work.

      • You KNOW I’ll let you know ;) I like eye glosses in general and I do enough eye looks that are supposed to crease… so I’m kind of curious about these thingies. Something new to play around with anyway, that’s always fun :)

  19. Karen

I want to eat Good Fortune. It looks like whipped cream and strawberries! I really wish these were better because I would buy all of them but I don’t ever layer and I always use a normal primer so no use for these.

  20. Megan

The other sites I’ve read say these are being added to the permanent line. Are they all limited edition, or just some of the colors?

  21. Zai

hey Cristine, just found out these new shadows gonna cost me between $35-$40 in australia. So, if i need to at least try it out what colors are best to buy? It’s so cheap there!!Thanks

    • I’d just pick a color that you didn’t have something similar to – there didn’t seem to be any that were worse/better, just lots of colors.

  22. Sam

Such a shame. They look beautiful in their pots.

  23. CJ

Ugh, I love your photographs on these, and I do love the colors. It’s a shame I won’t be buying any of them!

  24. Emma

SO disappointed they dont wear well! beautiful colours aswell!

  25. Krystal

I agree, these are such beautiful colors, but they look like a big mess.

  26. Sam

The texture looks really amazing, but this is a prime example of why MAC needs to come out with less collections each year. If they did this, then they would have more time to put more thought into new products, which would warrant better quality. I just feel like they are rushing to push out all of these collections each year. It really is a shame, because some of these colors are gorgeous, and if the quality was there, I would have picked up quite a few. I also do not like how a ton of the product gets stuck on the inside of the cap. I don’t know why, but it just bothers me! lol. Thanks for the great review Christine! :)

  27. Sam

And I have many cream eyeshadow bases that crease horribly, but they are all drugstore brands that I got on sale, and I do not mind putting a primer underneath of them, and setting them with a powder eyeshadow, because they did not cost me a lot of money. But, if I am going to spend $17.00 on something like this, I do not expect to have to do any of the above with it. I am just so sad, because they are soooo gorgeous in the pots!!!!!

  28. Avatar of fabiola fabiola

Hi christine, can you compare this to makeup forever aqua cream? Are the almost the same? Thank you for your review.

  29. Vivian

I don’t feel these will do very well, for me personally it seems like mac are just pushing out a really unneeded product

  30. I’m so bummed that they don’t last long and so on, because the colors are lovely!

  31. Avatar of Alisha Alisha

Hi Christine! I was just wondering if these could be worn as eyeliners?

  32. julietta

what happens if you set these with a translucent powder?

    • I found it took down the sheen a bit, and if you apply it like you would eyeshadow, it’s fine, but if you just dust, you’ll see some creasing.

  33. Beauty Secrets

I don’t even know why they would make these. They LOOK watery and thin. Not the least bit intriged by these.

  34. kaley

are you listing the costs in US dollars?

  35. brittni

i work for MAC. These are NOT bases, they are cream shadows. Best applied with finger or synthetic brush. Fast response eye cream is a good base bc of the silicone

  36. Adee

I have to say, I love these shadows! I am a MAC collector and usually get something from each collection, but only if I like the product and will wear it. I was concerned about these after reading your review, but tried them in store and loved them! I have had them on all day and haven’t seen any creasing or anything. They’re shimmery and beautiful! I especially love good fortune, free as air, and luxury touch. They are gorgeous in person!!!

  37. Toni

I bought Good Fortune because I use Sin by Urban Decay almost daily to brighten the inner corner of my eye. My Sin has worn down and I wanted to find a cream that was similar to the color. Good Fortune is a good match.

MAC’s Painterly used under these make these work a bit better than any primer or used alone. I use Painterly and then apply these with a 239 MAC brush or any shadow brush.

I have had great success with them and staying power. They have lasted ALL day until I have taken them off. I did not use any shadow on top. Just Painterly paint pot & Good Fortune on lid!

  38. Avatar of Jasmine Jasmine

did you try these over eyeshadow? that’s what my mac ma told me to do and im really curious to see how well it works

  39. This pictures are amazing! Is it all with the same lens? And which lens is it? I really love it!

  40. Jaime

I swatched count your assets in the store today and it has lasted all day on my arm, but i did notice it did slide around on my arm when i swatched it. It’s a shame that the pigmentation of it faded after 4 hours…i might buy it though

  41. Leila

I really like impeccably rich, but I think the colour looks remarkably similar to Urban Decay’s primer potion in greed, am I correct? I compared the swatches on your website (so there’s no discrepancy) and it seems like purely in terms of colour, the UDPP in greed could be a very close dupe. I would really like to know your opinion Christine, since I don’t have access to swatch both and decide.

  42. Linda Alldredge

I got two as samples from The Body Needs on Saturday and was astonished at the beauty of Extra Charged and Free as Air when I swatched it on my hand. Comments here and on YouTube have been very helpful in unlocking the vibrancy and staying power of these shadows.

Bottom line- the best advice suggests using a primer potion like UD Primer Potion and a paint pot underneath to get the staying power. To get the vibrancy, pat it on. Wait for it to dry, then pat on more on top. Then leave it alone. Trying samples first may be a good way to see if your skin chemistry works with them. I put it on at 6:30am, and took it off at 8:00pm. No signs of creasing or fading.

  43. beck

    Hello,
would you be so kind to please suggest a color that I can use that looks like “Impeccably Rich” Big Bounce shadow? (It’s the gold colored one.) I love this color so but the Big Bounce shadows apparantly have a very short shelf life and dry up with in a matter of a few months tops.
I had no idea they dried up so fast or I may not have purchased.
    Thankyou very much,
    =)
    Beck

  44. hstichler

Hey Christine! So I have a question for you and I don’t know if you’ll necessarily be able to help me out, but I just figured I’d give it a try! :) First off, I love your blog! Definitely rely on it for my beauty purchases :o) So I received a Big Bounce shadow in “Impeccably Rich” for Christmas. I picked it up at a Nordstrom in Houston and thought I’d enjoy the color! I’ve only used it about four times and I would only slightly put the tip of my finger in! Definitely not the best product I’ve tried by MAC! From day one, I’ve been suspicious of the product, or lack of product. It’s not even an EIGHTH full! I could see the bottom of the product and throughout the sides of the glass container, even when I first got it! I thought it was just that MAC was being skimpy, but then I did a little “investigation,” going around and looking at others’ Big Bounce shadows! Even looking at your photos, it’s obvious something was up with my product, especially because of how I got it! I went to the Nordstrom’s MAC counter and asked if they had any Big Bounce shadows still available. The MAC worker said no, but asked what shade I was looking for. She said that it was a bummer that I missed out, but then a minute or so later, she said that she wanted me to wait a moment. She goes and looks through a bunch of drawers while I’m looking at other products and then, out of no where, she pulls out “Impeccably Rich.” The issue was that the packaging was beat up and after I brought it home, I saw that it had no seal and it looked like it had been used–there was very little product as compared to the amount that I imagined there would be! I couldn’t take it back though because I was just visiting my aunt for the weekend and I was scheduled to leave for my flight within the next hours. I do not have a Nordstrom near me, either. The closest one is 2-3 hours away! I’ve heard such good things about Nordstrom’s return policy and customer service, but was just wondering if I’ve waited too long? I’m going down again within the next week and I hope you can help me out! Is a year too long (I could understand why) or would I still have a chance at getting my money back? Would they understand, even after all this time? Please reply, Christine!

    Much love, Halle

    •  @hstichler I would try going – Nordstrom is usually REALLY good about returns. I’ve definitely returned things 2-3 months later (but to be fair, they were all clothing/shoe items with tags and all that), but it’s worth a shot.
