Looks – Black Ore Solar Bits and Neo Sci Fi Dramatic Eyes

Date: May 21, 2008 - Posted in: Black, Brown, Gold, Looks

Quick look using Solar Bits. Boy, they are a bit messy. I recommend using them BEFORE applying foundation, that way you can wipe away any fall out. I used mine with mixing medium, so once it’s on, it shouldn’t have any (or minimal) fall out, but you will get some bits and pieces that fall out when you initially apply it to the lid. The Solar Bits also smudge a LOT and very easily, so you may want to use makeup remover on a swab to clean up, rather than flicking it away (which generally just smudges it all over your face).

As an aside, the lips for this look are not the ones I’d normally opt for, BUT I wanted to try out my two new Neo Sci Fi lip products anyhoo ;)  I’d usually pair this dramatic eye with nude lips — think Pleasureseeker or Sunsonic and Naked Space together! Since it’s hard to visualize, I included a full face shot of me wearing Strawberry Blonde lipstick with Vital Spark lipglass–something less OTT and more in line with the look.

I used Black Ore solar bits with mixing medium all over lid, Goldmine eyeshadow on inner lid, Antiqued eyeshadow on middle of lid (could substitute Time & Space here!), Carbon eyeshadow on outer lid and crease, Femme-fi eyeshadow (LE) above crease and on brow, Black Ore solar bits on lower lash line, Feline kohl power on lower lash line, Femme-Fi eyeshadow (LE) on lower lash line, and Plushlash mascara on lashes. I wore Other Worldly blush (LE) on cheeks. I had Sci Fi Delity lipstick (LE) with Supreme lipglass (LE) on my lips.

** These are recommendations for dupes based on permanent colors available — may not necessarily be identical; they are the closest I can think of!

Femme-fi = Shroom; Other Worldly = Honour; Sci Fi Delity = New York Apple (blotted); Supreme = Explicit

Love the drama on your eyes, the colors make your eyes look like cat eyes – very cool!! I love the lippy on you, but you are right, it’s very OTT. It would look beautiful with a neutral eye though …

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      Thanks so much, Critty!! :)

Yeah, it’s more of a neutral to just barely not neutral eye kind of lip color!

This look is fabulous!! How would you compare BLK ORE to the pigment..(can’t remember off the top of my head) but it is also a dark grey/blk with gold???

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      Thank you so much!

Hmm, I don’t know which pigment you’re talking about, to be honest! It’s chunkier, harder to work with than a normal pigment, TBH!

      • Tammy

        Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Lol….Dark soul !! Had to go look ;)
It does look like it has a more blk with gold glitter whereas the Dark Soul pigment is blk with a gold cast…I have to order online no MAC here ;( So I don’t want it to be the same…thanks!

        • Christine

          Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Hmm, Dark Soul is kind of like a silvery black? when I used it. I own it, but I think I’ve only used it once, lol. But I think they are different… this is much more flecked with gold for sure.

Wow – that is so awesome!! So dark but shiny and reflective. The Solar Bits may be messy, but that looks amazing. I really want Femme-Fi.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks, Katherine! Yeah, they’re very much like pigments, just way messier and take a little more patience & time to use without turning your face into a hot mess.

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

    Wow!!!! Stunning, Christine!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Oh, thanks so much, Stacey :)

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I LOVE THIS!!!!! You look gorgeous and I am SO getting the Sci-Fidelity lipstick.

How did you find the Solar Bits? Were they hard to work with? If so, I have Mixing Medium, would that help?

I want to get the Black Ore but I’m not so sure.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      Hey Erin!

They NEEEED mixing medium like you need air, seriously. I just can’t imagine them working very well without some sort of wetted brush (you might be able to get away with Fix+ or water — but I never use either, so I’m not positive it would dry well, y’know?). The mixing medium intensifies the color, keeps the particles together (for the most part) before and when you apply, and then it holds it altogether in the end. ESSENTIAL!

Black Ore by itself is freakin’ gorgeous. Kind of reminded me of Antiques Gold reflects glitter with lots of black. I was originally just gonna put that alone on my lid, but then I got carried away, LOL. Next time…

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Gorgeous Christine! I ordered mine online and was worried about Black Ore because it looked a bit gritty on some swatches before it was released but now that you did a look with it, it’s really nice and indeed a perfect accessory to a smoky look!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks so much, Vanessa! It can be REALLY gorgeous (and it can be smudged like hotness, too) for a smoky eye, but it just requires a little patience. Don’t go running out the door while applying this, LOL!

  7. Jenni

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I really like this one :)

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      Thanks, Jenni :)

  8. Shefali

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I like the look Christine! HOWEVER, I’m going to be a no on the Solar Bits. I was so excited, but if it’s that much work to apply, forget it. I’m of the belief that make-up (especially when you pay alot), shouldn’t be so difficult to put on.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      Hey Shefali!

      Thanks!

They’re not *too* difficult, but they do take patience and a little planning. I think the more annoying part was that Black Ore is SO rich and black that you have to make sure you remove with makeup remover rather than just wipe it away. It smudges and sticks!

      • Shefali

        Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Hey Christine! I went today and checked them out. I like the colors. When I swatched them on my hand, I had to apply some pressure to sort of lightly crush them. It was trippy. I still didn’t buy any…but had quite the major haul. Future Earth was not out…bummer. I really wanted that Volcanic Ash Exfoliator and the lip exfoliator.

        • Molly

          Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I’m dying for the Volcanic ash exfoliator!! The lip exfoliator is available online http://www.maccosmetics.com
As the other one, it’s not even available online yet!!

          • Christine

            Thursday, May 22, 2008

I know, I hope they release it soon, Molly!

wow!! i love metallics and wasn’t sure about the solar bits, but i’m excited now that i ordered some samples on LJ cause this is beautiful! i love the e/s shape you made with the black ore, it is really complimentary with your eyes. :)
and the combo Sci Fi Delity lipstick & Supreme lipglass will be mine… that is to die for! i’m all about browny reds.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I love the orange-y-copper highlights in the center of the lid!!! This is one of my favorite looks that you’ve done…usually you go for a natural look and that is appreciated, but your extreme- color application is flawless!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Hey Stephanie! I’ll try to do a tut if I can! I so rarely do the same look twice, so it may be a bit different :)

  14. dee

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Ok, now that is just too cute. It’s dramatic, for sure, but perfect for going out. I adore black/silver.

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks, Dee! Yes, this isn’t so much the “meeting your boyfriend’s parents” kind of look, but hey, I’ll go to the grocery store in it!

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

chris what do u think is the best blending brush from mac, ESP for this look

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I used the 239 for blending, it’s my favorite brush for just about… everything! Otherwise the 224 would be good.

  20. Gina

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

gorgeous! I went to my freestanding store today and they didn’t have the collection in yet =( Oh well, at least I have more time to look at swatches and try to find some dupes before i get something! keep up the good work!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks, Gina :) That sucks that it wasn’t out :( They should have had it out!

  22. Sharonda

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, very intense!I actually like it.So Solar Bits are suppose to somewhat close like a pigment?

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks so much! Yes, they’re pretty much just like pigments, but they’re chunkier/grittier/looser.

  23. Molly

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Wow, it looks amazing!! I wish I was as good as you, lol!! Anyways great to see this up so soon, can’t wait for more

  26. Carrie

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Totally gorgeous! I think I’m going to have to pick up a Solar Bit or two just as a toy — cuz I don’t know how often I’ll have the opportunity to wear it out, these days :P

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks, Carrie! You should definitely get one for fun, lol.

  27. joyce

      LOL! Thank youuu ;P

  29. Kharina

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

W-O-W! Love the look! One of your top 5 on my list fo-sho!

Also, I noticed your eyebrows are a bit thicker or fuller and I personally LOVE how they look as well.

    (jeez…when does the coveting stop?)

Anyway, do you mind my asking what color you used to fill in your eyebrows for THIS look? And is that the same color you mostly use for your other looks or do you alternate?

By the way, thanks so much for sharing!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      Hey Kharina!

Thank you!! I’ve been trying to thicken up for the past few weeks. It is very slow going, but I’m trying. I used Smut eyeshadow in this look. I do alternate between Smut, Espresso, and Carbon. It kind of depends how dramatic or dark I want my brows. Espresso is lightest — I used that for two years, probably, and I only recently started using Smut. Usually if I use Carbon, I do Espresso first, then Carbon to define–Smut is a nice in-between, basically. Less steps!

  30. Charlotte

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

That’s an awesome look! I am not seeing anything wrong with the eye/lip color combo. I would wear that on my own face. Black Ore looks really cool. How similar is it to that Nars black gold shadow, does anyone know?

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks, Charlotte! It’s not TOO over the top, but it is a bold look, especially with pretty colorful lips!

Wish I could help you on the NARS comparison!

  31. Vivien

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Damn you now I want Black Ore!!!!!!!!! I thought I had decided against it!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

      LOL! My bad, Vivien ;)

  32. Sash

      Thank you!!

      Really?! How funny!

  33. Mai

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

WOW! Love the look! I was going to pass on those pigments from Solar Field collection, but now I am reconsidering! I like the lippies too!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Thanks, Mai! :) They’re worth a peek if you can take one!

  34. sweety_heart

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

The eye goes well with the Sci Fi Delity/Supreme lipglass combo! Great evening look!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Aw, thanks!! It’s a bit much for everyday, but maybe for the club or an evening out, it’d be more fitting!

  35. jeannie

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I don’t think I can deal with the mess of those solar bits!

    • Christine

      Wednesday, May 21, 2008

It’s not too bad, honest :)

  36. Theresa

wow amaaaazing. i think this is my new favorite look from you. not just the drama but the transition is wonderful up close and from a distance and i find it very wearable too. you must do a tutorial for this one.

  38. Neil Cowley

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Love the neo-sci-fi term, but personally wouldn’t do silver. That’s brave and standout!

    • Christine

      Thanks for the input, Neil!

  39. Molly

    Wednesday, May 21, 2008

oh and I forgot to ask, did you happen to see the nail polish?? I normally don’t wear any, but people rave about how long it lasts compared to others.

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 22, 2008

      Hi Molly!

I sure did. They’re pretty, and if you like neons, go for it. I don’t find that MAC lasts any longer than OPI or brands in that range.

      • Molly

        Thursday, May 22, 2008

I was looking at the neutral coppper tone one; metalist. Good idea, or no???

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 22, 2008

Hey, I’m a little confused what you mean… they have NW35 as a shade available.

I wasn’t so sure of this look when I saw only the ‘eye’ pictures…but the overall look is FANTABULOUS! Like, wow, dramatic but not overly so. I’m not from the US so this collection is gonna take some time to get here…sigh!

    Thursday, May 22, 2008

as always awesome job. Thanks for shanring your experience and thoughts about the solar bits. They look really pretty but I might pass on these. it seems to difficult to work with. HA! But then again I might change my mind later.

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 22, 2008

Thanks so much, Dawn! I’m happy to be your guys’ guinea pig ;)

  49. kellie

    Thursday, May 22, 2008

Has anybody with contacts tried to use solar bits yet? I can use pigments but glitter is a def no no. Just wondering how they will react with my contacts.

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 22, 2008

Hey Kellie! I did notice a little bit of sensitivity to these (and I don’t normally have any to pigments), so it may be an iffy product for you :(

  50. Ariele

    Thursday, May 22, 2008

Gorgeous! I bought this along with Scatterays yesterday. The MA was wearing both on her eyes & it looked soo nice; she had the Black Ore toned down a lot though. I did notice that the Solar Bits get ALL over te place though. Even after I had used hand sanitizer after swatching the products on my hands, I had gold flecks EVERYWHERE.

Anyway, you used Black Ore as the base in this look, right? How did it hold up?

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 22, 2008

Thanks, Ariele! Glad you got Black Ore! I did use it as a base — I used it with mixing medium, so it lasted all night long!

  52. Row

    Thursday, May 22, 2008

Gorgeous! I love the strong eye and I love the lip – I think this face is great even though there are two focal points

    • Christine

      Thursday, May 22, 2008

Thanks, Row! I’m personally not too comfortable with the bold eyes and lips usually, but this combo isn’t TOO strong.

  55. Ju

Christine, would you say Femme fi and shroom and so similar that it is not worth buying?

Hey Kellie! It’s smoother and has better pay off for me, IMO! It has a bit more pop of color, too.

I love the dramatic look you created with this collection, especially the touch of the bronze colour in the middle of your lid. AMAZING!

    i love the outcome color!!!
its just the black color tone that ive ever dreamed for..
but the problem for me is..that messy part
with my beginner skills, i dont know whether i can pull it off or not
    sign*
but kind of mixing medium did you use? did u get the glitters everywhere at the end, i mean on your face and maybe on your clothes.
Ive heard some girls complain bot how messy it is,,that worried me

Thanks, Pompam!! I’m glad you liked it :D

I just used the water-based kind. It doesn’t get all over your face or clothes, just underneath the eye area.

Wow, (yes I am late to the party) this is really gorgeous! I’ve always loved black and gold together, and was looking for an inspirational FOTD when I found this! Thanks so much! I’ve ordered black ore and can’t wait for my aunt to bring it to me when she comes to visit!!
